Christmas Bargains

The Kansas City Star points out that prices have dropped on many consumer electronics this shopping season. Case in point? The updated and redesigned iPod Nano is selling for far under Christmas 2005 prices. Take the 4G model. In 2005, you'd spend $249. This year? $199. That's a 20% price drop right there.

Willing to buy a refurb? $149 and free shipping--at least for now. Refurb iPods are flying out of the Apple store as fast as they're being posted. If you're looking for a refurb, be vigilant. Keep checking the inventory on a daily (or even hourly) basis.

The Star article states that American consumers may spend as much as $21 billion on gadgets during the end-of-the-year shopping season.

'No iPod Movie Rips' says Library of Congress

According to MacWorld UK, the Copyright Office of the US Library of Congress has rejected a petition which requested that owners of iPods and other portable media players be allowed to rip the CDs and DVDs they own to their own playback devices. You'd imagine, wouldn't you, that you should be allowed to transfer material you own so long as you make sure that multiple copies would never be played simultaneously. But no. The RIAA strenuously disagrees. Apparently space-shifting and format-shifting do not count as non-infringing uses.

You can read the Electronic Freedom Foundation's reply to the ruling here.

Gee Three releases Slick plug-in updates

Good news for iMovie 6 users. Gee Three has updated several of their Slick plug-in volumes. These plug-ins add all sorts of visual effects to iMovie for the amateur video enthusiast. Apparently, the reason for the updates is that the iMovie/QuickTime interface wasn't too happy handling flash animations. The Gee Three developers created work-arounds for the affected volumes, namely volumes 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. If you've bought any of these products, you can download the Slick 2.0.2 updates at the GeeThree site.

Man. How the time passes. Sometimes the TUAW posts flick by so fast that it's just too easy to miss a gem or two. Here's our favorite posts of the week brought together for your enjoyment. If you're looking for a nice post to read as you kick back and enjoy your early Sunday cappuccino, consider these offerings. Try not to spill the cappuccino on your Apple keyboard.

10 Little Known Command-Line Utilities

OS X Daily has a nice list of OS X command-line utilities today that you may have forgotten about or might never have encountered. For example, the article suggests using ifconfig to check your IP address or lsbom to peek at the contents of an OS X installer package. If the notion of extending your command line vocabulary appeals, it's worth a visit to this quick article. You might pick up a trick or two you can incorporate into your day-to-day routines.

Is Apple Doomed?

Apple doomed? That's what David Keppelmeyer thinks. Blogging at DanAquariam, Keppelmeyer suggests that a combination of financial underperformance, ongoing legal challenges and increased competition belies Apple's strong stock performance. Of course, we are talking about an article here that says Microsoft's Zune "is a huge blow to Apple" so you may want to carefully consider the source of this doom-and-gloom-prediction as you read through the article.

Us? We're pretty bullish on Apple, but then again, you've got to consider our inclinations too.

iTunes: Free Tuesday for the week of 11/21/2006

Each week, we at TUAW scour the iTunes store to find you the latest, freshest and most exciting freebies available. Because our special iTunes correspondent is off in Family Thanksgiving-land, here's just a sneak peak at this week's available freebies, all collected with special care and love and linked for your downloading enjoyment. The full iTunes freebies list will appear later this week.

US: Nothing at All by Wired All Wrong
Wired All Wrong is the project of Jeff Turzo (God Lives Underwater) and Matt Mahaffey (Self). "Nothing at All" is taken from their debut, Break Out the Battle Tapes. This track shows that the group knows how to chop and stutter beats under a layer of scratched-up dirty guitars.

US : Tamacun by Rodrigo y Gabriela
Rodrigo y Gabriela helps to bridge that divide between Dublin and Meixco with its fluid, acoustic workouts. The group (who is from Mexico Citym, but has been in Ireland for years) has a sense of drama inherited from its love of both classical and metal.

US : Via Lactea by Zoe
Mexico's Zoe gives us this free Single of the Week. "Via Lactea" starts with a moody underpinning of atmospheric sounds before lurching into a detached glam-rock stomp. This track takes a cue from the spacier side of the Brit-pop world, but infuses its own murky noise into the blend.

Do you watch video on your iPod?

I'm a big iPod video watcher. I love watching my shows while waiting on slow lines or at the dentist or at the DMV. My kids watch video when we're carpooling and my husband has a boatload of old John Wayne movies digitized that travel with us when we go to hotels. Perhaps we're not the most normal iPod users on Earth, but we use the iPod video features a lot. More than we even use the audio.

According to a recent study by Nielsen, we're completely out of step with most people.

Ars Technica reports that the demand for iPod video features is greatly overblown--if you believe Nielsen. After following 400 iPod users for a month, Nielsen concluded that a very small number of iPod users are interested in the video functionality of their iPod.

Now before you jump to any conclusions, keep in mind that those 400 users weren't all using video iPods--nearly a third didn't own or use video iPods. The Nielsen numbers suggest that only about 1% of the content played on the iPods they surveyed was video, a pretty pathetic showing. Even after restricting iPod use to video iPods, that number only rose to 2.2%.

Surprising, isn't it?

So what about you, TUAW readers? Do you use your iPod for video? Or are you mostly music listeners out there? Let us know in the comments as we conduct our own unscientific and highly skewed poll.

Apple investigates heat-to-electricity chip from Eneco

Apple Insider reports that a new chip that could convert heat into energy. The new "solid state energy conversion generation chip" is under development by chip maker Eneco. It works by grabbing electrons from a hot metal plate, passing them across a vacuum to a cold metal plate and capturing the resulting electronic charge. Or something like that.(We're not physicists, so don't sue us or anything.) The article says that Eneco is in talks with Apple (as well as Dell) to use this technology to harness the waste heat given off by CPUs to power fans and other electronic components.

New Mac OS X Exploit?

The UK's IT Week reports on a possible new Mac OS X exploit. A proof of concept appears on the Info-pull.com website, claiming that corrupted UDTO HFS+ image structures are vulnerable to denial of service attacks. If true, this same issue may affect FreeBSD installations. The article suggests disabling "open 'safe files' after downloading", which realistically speaking you've probably already done a long time ago if you've been worried about possible OS X attacks.

Target Ticked at Apple/Disney iTunes Deal

The Business section of the CentreDaily reports that Target may pull its Disney-based in-store promotions. In a nutshell, Target doesn't like that Disney is selling movies at the iTunes store for less than it charges brick & mortar retailers. Supposedly Target has already removed displays for Cars. In retaliation, Disney may not ship "Dead Man's Chest" DVDs to Target.

Now, now boys. Can't we just all get along?

As for me, I saw Cars at Walmart for just over 13 bucks and snatched up a copy rather than download the $12.99 version at iTunes, which I'd actually been planning to do. iTunes may cost less, but you don't get that nifty actual disk and all the extras. (Of course, you don't get all the stupid can't-forward-through-the-FBI-warnings either.)

TUAW Best of the Week

We're always proud of our work here at TUAW but we understand that you have lives. You have to work. You have to sleep. You have to eat. And other stuff. Lots and lots of others stuff. You can't be here 24/7 the way you want to. Or at least the way we wish you'd want to. Or even the way our advertisers wish that we wish that you'd want to. Or...well, you get the idea. So keeping that in mind, here's a round-up of our favorite TUAW articles this week in case you blinked and missed them the first time 'round. Enjoy!
