Lee Memorial Health System enters into agreement to purchase Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center and Gulf Coast Hospital
THURSDAY, AUG. 31ST - This afternoon Lee Memorial Health System's board voted to enter into an agreement with certain HCA affiliate for the purchase of Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center and Gulf Coast Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida. The transaction is expected to close by October 31st, 2006.
Officials of Lee Memorial Health System approached HCA in May of this year, and we entered into discussions to determine ways the hospitals could work together to achieve a more comprehensive approach to healthcare in the Ft. Myers area. Lee Memorial Health System presented an impressive proposal, and after careful consideration, we felt that this was the best option for our employees, physicians, the residents of Lee County, and HCA.
Gulf Coast Hospital and Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center will be better aligned to succeed as a part of Lee Memorial Health System, which has a leading presence in the Lee County area, with 5 hospitals, healthcare centers, a nursing home, more than 5,700 employees, 830 physicians on staff, and 948 licensed beds. The Health System has served the citizens of Lee County and surrounding communities since 1916.
After the transaction is complete, HCA will continue to maintain a strong presence in the state of Florida with 39 HCA hospitals serving communities throughout the state.
We appreciate the compassionate care that Gulf Coast Hospital and Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center employees have provided patients and their families throughout the years and know that they will be an invaluable asset to Lee Memorial Health System.
