M.S. Degree in Health Education . . .

The M.S. Degree in Health Education is a 36 hour program of study. The program is designed for those who aspire to work in a community, medical, corporate or school setting. For those who wish to work in the school setting as an educator, a teaching license is required.

The M.S. coursework may be completed online within one year or through traditional classroom delivery within two years.

The graduate program in Health Education provides students with instruction as well as research experiences necessary to become an educator or practitioner in health education. The program emphasizes: community assessment; program planning; program evaluation; and theoretical constructs in the social/behavorial sciences. The M.S. in Health Education coursework was designed on the Competency Based Framework for Professional Development of the Certified Health Education Specialist. Elective courses in physical activity, nutrition, and the behavioral sciences are included. Click here to learn more about Health Education Careers.

All students are required to complete the core courses. As such, all students are provided instruction and opportunities for skill development that is applicable to either the clinical, community, or school setting.

        Physical Activity Component

                 HKH 525 Gender Issues in Health
                 
        Nutritional Component
                 HKH 535 Nutrition for Health

        Elective Components
                  The student may choose from a variety of courses in the
                  Division of Education and Human Sciences

         Thesis or Internship Requirements - 6 Hours
                  HKH 598 Internship in Health Education
                  HKH 599 Masters Thesis in Health Education
                


#Students must hold or obtain a Mississippi "A" Teaching Certificate or the equivalent to be awarded the Mississippi "AA" Teaching Certificate upon completion of the program.

If you do not hold an "A" teaching certificate and would like to teach, the alternate route is available through the State Department of Education.  Consult their website for guidelines.

Admission Requirements . . .
Students requesting admission to the Master of Science in Health Education program must fulfill the following:
              
1) A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year
                  institution
              2) A minimum of 3.0 undergraduate QPA (4.0 scale)*
              3) Submission of GRE score which includes the writing exam.
                  Scores must
                  not be more than 5 years old
              4) Three letters of recommendation

              5) Certificate of immunization for measles and rubella

*Students with an undergraduate QPA of 2.75 may be eligible for provisional admission.
