How to reboot a crashed civilization. Site
  print pdf
If you're wondering what this is all about, please scroll down.

If you do know what this is about, but are feeling confused and don't know where to get started, here's what you do next...

  1. Register (email address suggested but not required)
  2. Introduce yourself on the the Forums. If you see anything interesting on them that you want to reply to, please do.
  3. Read the FAQs for more information, especially the About This Site FAQ . If you have a question that hasn't been answered there, scroll to the bottom and suggest it (if you don't have an answer, leave the answer part blank).
  4. Read the News to see what's been happening. You can post comments there too.
  5. If you want to help write a page but can't decide which one, just go to the list of unfinished articles and pick one at random. The About This Site FAQ will tell you how to edit pages and start new ones, including pages that no other pages link to yet.
  6. If you do know which page you want to help write, you can find it in the table of contents for the Manual.
  7. If you think you don't have enough knowledge to add anything useful, nothing could be further from the truth! If you don't have knowledge, what you do have a lot of is questions, and they are tremendously useful for getting a discussion started.
  8. If you see something here that you'll want to return to, bookmark it in your browser (or tag it with http://del.icio.us/ if you prefer).

What Keep The Lights On is all about

Ever notice how dependent you are on a huge, complex, high-tech society you can't control and can barely understand? What would happen if suddenly you couldn't rely on it anymore? The typical reaction to this idea is either alarmism or denial.

We're going to take another, more constructive approach here. We are going to pool our knowhow and spare time to put together a manual that explains in simple, straightforward terms how to build almost anything our civilization can build... and how to build the tools to build those things... and how to build the tools to build those tools... and so on down the line to sticks and stones (our goal for the first edition of the manual, though, is to focus mainly on energy generation and storage).

Hopefully you will never have to literally rebuild everything from scratch. Still, participating in this project will help you develop a practical understanding and appreciation of the everyday technologies upon which your way of life depends, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you'll be capable of helping to "Keep the Lights On" should unforseen circumstances befall our civilization.
