Keeping Account with Brooke Hunter
Say "accountant" and what image comes to your mind? Nerdy guy with glasses, short-sleeved shirt, tie, pocket protector, right?
Think again. Before Brooke Hunter became a porn star, she was an accountant.
"I worked in accounting for many years. Worked for a CPA firm doing business entertainment. Very numbers, very stuffy, very corporate-suit-401k. I got sick at the end of the year, I had a little problem with my thyroid, and I took a month or two off. A girlfriend of mine who was doing live Internet sex said, 'Why don't you give this a try?'
"I did. I loved it.
"I sat in a room, playing with myself and typing back to guys live on the Internet. I thought, 'what a kick.' It was a trip. This is great: I'm getting paid to do this. I'm getting paid to play with myself and to get off, and to talk to these guys and talk about sex.
"Shortly after that, through Ron Miller, I met several people. I said I really want to try it. I want to do one video. I want to see if I like it. I haven't stopped since, I haven't even thought of going back to accounting.
"It's coming up on two years now."
And the video work is still coming, once people know that her contract with WildLife Productions is non-exclusive. "I renewed my non-exclusive contract with WildLife to do eight more movies with them - it's non-exclusive, stressing that, non-exclusive, still working with other people, still doing tons of other stuff. I'm hoping that being selective, and picking and choosing - not just doing anything thrown my way, couple-hundred-dollar blowjob scenes here and there. I'm really trying to focus. I'm taller than most girls - I'm 5'8" - I'm curvy, I'm not a stick chick. I tried to be the girl next door, and I found the kind of things that I really like to do, which are really knock-down-drag-out really nasty erotic scenes. Not nasty-degrading, nasty-erotic."
What's the difference? [pause] This is obviously clear in your mind, but...
"It's very clear in my mind. Nothing that's degrading to women. It's pushing it to the edge of being erotic and nasty... It's really hard to define. I know what it is inside me, it's like the definition of 'obscenity,' I suppose: I know it when I see it."
She's also doing feature gigs in the L.A. area. "I had a wonderful time with the Free Speech Coalition. I'm still getting huge response from the stuff that I did, just dancing at Bob's for the anti-censorship defense committee. That was over a year ago and I still get people on my Website saying 'I loved seeing you in your Uncle Sam patriotic outfit, it's so nice to tie in the two.'
"I'm trying to stay local, because when I leave a set at the end of the day I want to crawl into my sweats and my ponytail and just relax. I'm doing one to two gigs a month dancing, lots of the Spearmint Rhinos, here and there, Sacramento. Close to travel. Vegas.
"Now I'm addicted to the costumes. If anybody out there wants to hire me, it's just to put the money in my pocket. I have my new addiction. It's not drugs or alcohol, it's costumes."
Unsurprisingly, she also has a Website. "brookehunter.com has been doing really well. I'm doing my own stuff, I'm able to edit, I'm able to upload. We're going to be doing live streaming video, we'll be able to have people come in for live chats and have rooms and cameras and keep adding to it. I want to have enough free stuff that fans can look at it and think 'Great, great nude pictures, here's her diary, here's what's going on.' And a pay section. Went through three different Webmasters to get what I wanted.
"The guy I have now is adult-friendly. You can say the f-word. Next step is the cameras and live streaming.
"I originally wanted to do all of my own uploading and design, and all of the graphics and do everything myself, but thankfully the reason I'm not is because my schedule has gotten so busy. Features with Metro, just finished with VCA, did something for Vivid yesterday. It's just been - knock on wood - going along fabulously.
"I just finished shooting with Veronica Hart on Marilyn Chambers' latest movie, Edge Play. I'm one of the main characters. I create these sexual fantasies for people. Taking it to the edge. What a wonderful experience. I was going through some videos and found a copy on laserdisc of Insatiable 2. And looking at the differences between adult then and adult now...
"Jamie Gillis was in it, which was so incredible because I never met him before until I shot with Marilyn, and I shot this particular scene knowing that I was going to work with two legends in the industry, and here I am, a baby. Thrilled. It was incredible. Two days before I'm sitting at home watching all this stuff, and I find myself shooting with them.
"I want to continue shooting the series I'm shooting, and I want to start directing. I've done some writing. I want to do some directing. I want to know every aspect of this. I don't want to just come in and be talent and then when I live out my 10-15 years in front of the camera I don't want to just have nothing to do. I want to be able to stay in adult, whether it is writing, producing, directing, hopefully still acting.
"And I have a question for everybody. Why is it that everybody in this industry, no one can return phone calls?"
You got me. I have no idea. They always return mine.
"Yeah, well," she laughs. "I'll start telling people you're my brother."
