But don't try this at home (in Detroit, DC, Cleveland, etc.)

The New York Times has a profile of James Shikwati, an African who is a free market advocate. I met him briefly four years ago back when I was at Cato.

According to the New York Times:
On a continent where socialists have often held sway, Mr. Shikwati is now a conservative phenomenon. He has published scores of articles hailing business as Africa’s salvation; offered free-market lectures on five continents; and, defying the zeitgeist of the Bono age, issued scathing attacks on foreign assistance, which he blames for Africa’s poverty. When Western countries pledged to double African aid last year, an interview with an angry Mr. Shikwati filled two pages of Der Spiegel, the German magazine.

“For God’s sake, please stop the aid!” he told the magazine.

Of course the Times writes it from the angle that there is something sinister about what is going on. It is never just that people who agree find one another.

As usual, I'm the taller and more handsome person in the photo

I may post a few comments about this within the next few days.

For those of you who don't know who I'm standing with, here's hint #1:

According to a 2002 poll: Nearly two-thirds of Americans (64%) could not name a single member of the current Supreme Court, and just 32% knew that there are nine Justices. Only five people (two men, three women) in the entire survey could name all nine. In contrast, a whopping majority -- 75% -- knew there are three Rice Krispies characters and 66% proudly cited their names.

Here's hint #2: He's not Snap, Crackle, or Pop...

In other words, the country is screwed up if a Democrat doesn't win in 2008...

Nominee, for Dumb Headline of the Day, in today's Washington Post: "Is America too Racist for Barack? Too Sexist for Hillary?"

I skimmed the article. Money quote: "And does the hefty symbolism that Obama and Clinton would bring help one of them more than the other -- in other words, is the country more racist or more sexist?"

Or even worthy of existing...

Another headline from today's Post: "The System Worked." Well, of course! Democrats won. Seriously, if you had been unable to access the news for the last week, and picked up the Washington Post and saw the headline "The System Worked" on a Washington Post staff editorial about the election, then you would have instantly known: The Democrats won!

Two Gunmen Hold Up Five Churchgoers in NE

Five people worshiping at a Northeast Washington church were robbed Sunday by two armed men, D.C. police said.

The holdup occurred about 8 a.m. in the chapel of Union Wesley Zion Church, in the 1800 block of Michigan Avenue NE, police said. The chapel was being used by members of Full Gospel Zion Church at the time, police said. The gunmen took robbed three men and two women, taking purses, wallets, cash, credit cards and a cellphone, police said.

Will the Post stop running the presses when Mike Wise dies?

Wise writes a stupid column about the tragedy at the University of Miami (one of the players was gunned down). Wise writes: "Not even death stops the college football machine. Not even a kid murdered outside his apartment after practice on Tuesday will stop the University of Miami from continuing its season in College Park on Saturday, a day it should have used for mourning the death of Bryan Pata."

Will the newspaper machine known as the Washington Post stop publishing when Wise dies? Some of his colleagues may take the day off, but the Washington Post news machine would continue on. The paper even published the day after publisher Donald Graham passed away. Did the Post put out an issue on September 12, 2001?
