More About the Merril Collection The Merril Collection is a non-circulating research collection of science fiction, fantasy, magic realism and experimental writing, for researchers, educators, and the general public. We endeavour to collect every SF and fantasy title in the English language. We also have a substantial collection of critical material relating to the genre, and non-fiction materials on related topics such as parapsychology, UFOs, SF and fantasy art work, television programmes and films. Science fiction and fantasy literature are forms of popular culture which reflect the changing visions and aspirations of society. Our purpose is to provide access to this popular literature now and also to preserve it for future generations of scholars. For this reason, the materials belonging to the Merril Collection may not be taken home, but may be used here in the library. Many of our older, more fragile items need to be protected from excessive handling and changes in temperature. The Merril Collection is a "closed-stack" library. Our materials are shelved separately from our reading room, in a secure temperature- and humidity-controlled environment with minimal lighting operated by motion detectors. We take every possible precaution to preserve these items so they will be available for you in years to come. A changing selection of current periodicals and new books are displayed in the reading room for browsing. Our staff is knowledgeable in the fields of science fiction and fantasy literature, and we are here to answer your questions. All of our items are selected, catalogued and indexed in-house, using specialized reference tools and our own databases, developed and maintained over the years. We make every effort to keep up to date with the SF and fantasy genres. If you need current information about fantasy and science fiction series, please contact us . A sampling of our Series and Sequels in Science Fiction & Fantasy are also available.
Our Collection contains over 38,000 books and 25,000 periodicals as well as graphic novels, selected audiovisual materials and fantasy/roleplaying games.
