Well, we will just have to wait and see. If and when it gets to the local music counters.

Point Taken though listening to Charl's MP3's on my cheapo speakers is amazing in that she sound so good.
I can't justify to myself buying a CD just to see if it sounds better than an mp3.

What's the "system"?

Try this: http://netcd.co.nz/cgi-bin/netCD/Recordings.cgi?61781

Joby and Dave, not to be mean or anything, but since neither of you has heard her actual CD, I recommend your comments be taken with a grain of salt (and a shot of tequila with lemon).

Here's my two cents:

Vocal pitch 10
Vocal clarity 9.5
Vocal beauty 10
Vocal power 8.5
Vocal Range 10.25 - sorry Crispin - but I've got to make the point
Accompaniment - 8
Arrangments - 7.5
Production quality - 8.5
Choice of Songs - 9

Song that Charlotte can sing that Haley probably wouldnt perform as well : "La Pastorella"

Song that Haley can sing that Charlotte might not perform as well : "I Dreamed a Dream"

Were each singer to have performed Schubert's "Ave Maria" the results would be quite similar.

BTW - Steve's point is well taken about "Love Changes Everything". The final note is a top B-flat - the same note that Charl hits at the end of "Men of Harlech". She also hits and sustains a top B at the end of "All I Ask Of You"

'Power' is deceptive , as I have mentioned before ,Hayleys 'style' makes the high notes look so effortless but this could be just good technic , I think she has unusual fullness in the lower range making her voice sound much more mature than her 14yrs at times but what i really look forward to is your reactions when you finally get to 'see' her perform, she has a totally unpretentious manour with a little nervous giggle after every thing she says which makes it all the more difficult not to tease her

Heh...Lindsay, the only reason I am giving Charl a slight edge in terms of vocal power is that she sings arias, and, to this point, Hayley does not. Almost by definition, arias require more power to perform. Hence, I am not saying that Haley cannot produce as much power as Charlotte, I am saying that based upon what I am hearing on this CD, she does not.

On this system, I take it that Charlotte defines a "10". But which Charlotte?

Are we comparing first albums? In that case if VoA's very mediocre production quality is allowed to define a "10", then Hayley's album is "15" minimum. The production quality of Charlotte's second and third albums is quite high, though, and if those define the "10" then I'd put Hayley's album well up there, more like a 9.5 with just a slight mark down for balance in one chorus of Amazing Grace.

Assigning numbers to the qualities of the singers themselves seems problematic to me. Not sure I'd want to go there.

While Hayley's and Charl's vocal talents are of a similar magnitude, it's essential to point out that their voices are decidedly different. Each makes a unique impact. Still, I'm finding it easier to appreciate Hayley on a day when I first haven't listened to Charlotte, and vice versa. For "best results" I recommend that anyone buying "Walking in the Air" set aside CC for a day before listening.

Dan - I was using "Charlotte Church" as a model, since the age of both singers were similar at that time. I think that this is a useful exercise - at least I found it so - because it requires objectively listening to both singers. Consider it an objective quantification of a set of subjective criteria. Were one to put out a survey like this to hundreds of respondants, the results would be quite meaningful.

I opened my mailbox this evening and found an envelope from New Zealand. Hayley's CD finally arrived! Tell you what - - she's really good. The music doesn't really strike me as sounding "classical-ish" (as Charlotte might say) - - more like easy listening than straight orchestral (wonder if that made any sense). Highlights: "Walking in the Air," "Ave Maria (Schubert)," "I Dreamed a Dream," "God Defend New Zealand." Now I can't wait to hear more from her!

See Hayley's CD has been in the charts for 12 weeks. It went to the top, is now standing at no. 8. And, has gone double platinum in NZ.

Brilliant. I am delighted for her. I am listening to her as I type this (All I Ask Of You).

This fan from England would be honoured to be of service to her at any time in any small way. My reward is the beauty of her music.

p.s. Still a loyal Charl fan too. (Oil on the waters syndrome)

That's quite sweet of you! However, I think it's weird how I make friends so easily! Am I like, some magnet that attracts people? My friends (I have many) are like, 'well, you just looked agreeable!' Did I look (sound, act, ??) agreeable to you all? Or are you just really friendly to newer people?

Can't speak for anyone else but, I'm just a naturally friendly type. I also greatly respect anyone of whatever age who is really trying to do something with their lives, and developing a beautiful talent like singing ranks very highly with me. Plus, you may have caught the lighthearted edge to the reply - I'm English.

So, whereabouts in Britain were you?

Heh, the biography on Universal's "official" site lists Hayley's age as 13. She's been 14 for quite some time now, hasn't she?

This reminds me of Sony's official bio of Charlotte which, incredibly, gave her age as 13 up until the eve of her 15th birthday!

I've learned not to expect much from "official sites" authored by record labels.

Westenra sounds on song for major record deal
30 SEPTEMBER 2001
By RACHEL GRUNWELL
The head of a major international record label has met teenage singing sensation Hayley Westenra and
discussed recording an album.

The Sunday Star-Times has been told the head of Decca Records loved Westenra, 14, and an album deal could be
finalised by the end of the year.

Decca Records is a leading classical music label based in Britain and the United States. The company has released
albums with stars including Luciano Pavarotti and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Westenra is recording her second album for Universal and spent three days recording half the songs at the Corelli
School of Music's studio.

The album will feature a selection of Christmas, favourite and original songs such as Silent Night, Pokarekareana,
Somewhere Over the Rainbow and a Boh Runga song All I Have to Give. It will be released in November.

"I'm still in shock that I'm doing another album," Westenra said.

"But I'm really enjoying singing and inspiring other children."

She said the new album was a family affair with her sister Sophie, 11 and also a soprano, joining her on the song
Greensleeves.

The Burnside High School student hopes the album will be as popular as the first, a disc of modern and show
songs, which went triple platinum with 54,000 sales.

She also recently had a sold-out nationwide tour in six centres.

Dame Malvina Major, who is helping Westenra with her technique once a week, said she did not know what the
future held for Hayley and that her voice could change.

But she was doing the right thing by making the most of every moment.

"She's a very talented young lady. She's got a special sound, a very true sound," she said.

Auckland's Corelli School of Music principal David Selfe, a producer of the album, said there were also plans for the
Christchurch teenager to perform concerts in the US next year.

Universal are being a bit cagey. They are not denying anything but, they refuse to confirm anything either. They say it is a promise made to the family not to allow "rumours" to start flying around. Apparently, they are saying that any album appearing before Christmas would only be available in NZ but, that's not saying that there will be one.

Keeping rumors in check isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, rumors tend to increase publicity, good or bad. Maybe Universal should leak some information once in a while just to keep interest high.
