The Honorable Wallace P. Carson, Jr.

The Honorable Wallace P. Carson, Jr., joined the Oregon Supreme Court in 1982 and was Chief Justice from September 1991 through December 2005. Before joining the Supreme Court, he served as a judge for Marion County Circuit Court (1977-1982).

Before becoming a judge, Justice Carson

  • was in private practice (1962-1977)
  • served in the Oregon House of Representatives (1967-1971), where he was Majority Leader (1969-1971)
  • served in the Oregon State Senate (1971-1977) and was Minority Floor Leader (1975-1977).

Among his many professional contributions, Justice Carson has served as

  • a member of the Board of Trustees of Willamette University since 1970
  • chair of the Oregon Appellate Judges Association (1989-1991)
  • chair of the Commission on Appellate Court Performance Standards for the National Center for State Courts.

Justice Carson graduated from Stanford University (B.A. 1956) and Willamette University College of Law (J.D. 1962).
