The News and Daniel Johnston
by Colin Stutz | 04.14.2006

2006 is shaping up to be quite the year for indie singer/songwriter/icon du jour, Daniel Johnston. With the March 31 release of the critically acclaimed documentary film The Devil and Daniel Johnston (via Sony Pictures Classics), Johnston—the man, the myth, the legend—has been everywhere.

Case and point:

In March the Texas songwriter’s artwork was included in the Whitney Museum’s “Biennial” exhibit in New York City, while the Clementine Gallery in New York curated its own Johnston retrospective titled “The Story of an Artist: Daniel Johnston.”

Tonight Johnston will attend and perform a London tribute concert in his honor at the Barbican Hall, which will also include the likes of Scottish pop-rockers Teenage Fanclub, paraplegic singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt, Jason Pierce of Spiritualized, the folky James Yorkston, and Giant Sand mastermind Howe Gelb.

Coming up on May 4, Johnston will perform in Los Angeles for the first time in over five years with a special intimate concert at Spaceland. While there, he will also tape a performance for IFC’s The Henry Rollins Show.

All of this activity is leading up to the release of Welcome To My World, the first greatest hits collection from Daniel Johnston, which is being released April 18 via the Johnston family's own Eternal Yip Eye Music label. Besides featuring tracks from Johnston’s vast catalogue of releases, the record will include several songs never released on CD.

Johnston’s artwork is also to be featured in Armpit of the Mole, a new compilation of drawings from 44 European and American artists, which will be featured in the New York Mona Rowe Gallery on May 21.
