Fast launches ALLTHEWEB.COM Alchemist customized search tool

New feature allows users to define the appearance of search results from the largest web search engine via self-defined cascading style sheets (CSS)

OSLO, Norway, 2002-07-17 - Fast Search & Transfer™ (FAST), a leading developer of search and real-time filter technologies, today announced that the presentation of search results from AlltheWeb.com™ (www.AlltheWeb.com) can be completely customized with the AlltheWeb Alchemist™ tool. AlltheWeb, FAST’s search technology showcase and the world’s largest search engine, now allows technically-minded users to create a customized look and feel for web, multimedia, news, and categorized search results from AlltheWeb via user-defined cascading style sheets (CSS). This feature can be accessed at http://www.alltheweb.com/alchemist.
FAST LAUNCHES ALLTHEWEB.COM ALCHEMIST CUSTOMIZED SEARCH TOOL
"AlltheWeb continually develops advanced search features designed for our loyal following of academics and technologists to test out the latest FAST search engine technology. AlltheWeb Alchemist marks the first time users can freely customize the appearance of their search engine and their search experience," said Dr. John M. Lervik, chief executive officer of FAST. "By using standards like XHTML 1.0 and CSS 1 and 2, AlltheWeb Alchemist provides a glimpse of the future Web where the logical structure of the content is separated from how search results are presented."

AlltheWeb Alchemist displays web search results in basic HTML code. Searchers can view these results in this basic format, or customize the results view via their own pre-defined CSS file, allowing the user to control virtually all aspects of result presentation for the various search catalogs and other elements on the page. Users can share their design by sending a link to the style-sheets so that their friends may have the same search experience. As this is a beta technology, no formal support from FAST is provided and FAST is not responsible for any style sheets created by third parties.

AlltheWeb delivers search results from the over 2.1 billion Web pages, the largest of any search engine, and integrates them with award-winning breaking news results from thousands of news sources and hundreds of millions of image, video, MP3, and software files, all within a single search result page. With advanced linguistics, categorization techniques, and support for 49 languages, AlltheWeb combines a comprehensive, fresh, and fully integrated search resource with one of the largest news resources on the Internet.
