Archdiocese of San Francisco, which originally covered all of northern
California, was established on July 29, 1853. The present territory
of the Archdiocese includes three counties: San Francisco, San Mateo
and Marin. The Archdiocese encompasses an area of approximately
2,325 square miles.

and the Catholic population is about 425,000 people. There are 90
parishes and 11 missions within the Archdiocese.
schools and religious education programs reach approximately 50,000
students each year. There are nearly 30,000 students attending the
63 elementary schools and 14 high schools within the Archdiocese.
Another 20,000 elementary and high school students receive instruction
through parish-based religious education programs.
