Tenacious D's Jack Black
Tenacious D's Jack Black
12/12/06

THE biggest joke about Tenacious D, spoof rockers and "folk metal" purveyors, is that they can really play: Jack Black, arguably Hollywood's hottest comedy talent, has an undeniably powerful voice and his partner in crime, guitarist Kyle Gass, can move his sausage-like fingers around his fretboard at dizzying speed and with great virtuosity.

So it's somewhat refreshing that The Greatest Band In The World's brand of schoolboy smut is not their only attraction: their self-titled debut album proved that they had the musical chops to satisfy the most hardened metal head, with songs such as Tribute and Explosivo.

And, of course, Kielbasa, which kicked off the show. A song about a large Polish sausage... you get the idea.

But how did their brand of music/comedy cut it in a venue the size of the M.E.N. Arena? Well, they rocked. And rocked HARD.

Colonel Sanders

Condsider the evidence... who else but The D could have a killer band, assembled in Hell, consisting of Colonel Sanders on drums? Who performed a  "finger-lickin' good" drum solo? Or Charlie Chaplin on bass? Or the Antichrist on lead guitar?

Anyone attracted to the gig on the strength of watching Black in heart-warming movie fayre such as his current rom-com, The Holiday, will have been in for something of a surprise... Kickapoo has lyrics that "would make a sailor blush".

Ultimately, you either relish the humour and bombastic music of Tenacious D, or you hate them. It was obvious that those at the Arena worship at the altar of all things D.

But one can't helping thinking, where do they go from here? Two albums, the movie Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny . . . without reinventing themselves or - gasp! - pulling the plug on the whole thing, maybe the joke will wear thin.

But last night, the faithful gorged themselves on JB and KG's tasty riffs.

It was great to tuck in.

What did you think? Have your say.
