GCC faces uphill battle

GCC faces uphill battle
Tuesday December 26, 2006

GCC chairman Ratu Ovini Bokini
The Great Council of Chiefs is struggling to persuade the Fiji Military Forces to agree to resolutions they initially proposed to solve the current crisis.

GCC chairman, Ratu Ovini Bokini has indicated that the council is rapidly under pressure to try and resolve the current situation.

"We have entered a phase where basically everything has died down but the sooner we resolve the situation the better it is for all of us," Ratu Ovini said.

He also added that the council will persuade the army to engage in talks as soon as possible.

Ratu Ovini said the council is yet to meet the army after their meeting last week.

He said they were turned away from QEB last Friday because the army commander refused to meet their delegation.

Army spokesman Major Neumi Leweni said they will not accept any proposals by the council adding they do not recognise the chiefly body during this crisis.

He said the meeting of the chiefs last week was irrelevant because the GCC does not have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the army.
