Military won't meet GCC

Military won't meet GCC
Saturday December 23, 2006

The Fiji military says its does not recognise the Great Council of Chiefs or its resolutions and will not meet any delegation.

Military chief of staff Captain (Navy) Esala Teleni rebuffed comments made by GCC secretariat that Commander Voreqe Bainimarama has agreed to meet a delegation appointed by the 64-member council after the festive season.

There are reports that GCC member and former army commander Paul Manueli was yesterday tasked by the council to arrange for a meeting with the army, but his approach was rejected by the military.

The GCC delegation was to meet Bainimarama to inform the military of the council's resolution comprises of four representatives each from the three confederacies.

"Commodore Bainimarama has made it clear that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) does not recognise the GCC," Teleni said.

"Therefore we will not be meeting any delegations appointed by it."

The GCC after a three-day conference in Suva had yesterday acknowledged "the political reality that the military regime is in effective control of the machinery of government and Fiji".

However, the council it is resolutions said the President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, and Vice President Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi remain in office while Bainimarama claims that he is the president and has executive authority.

The GCC also called on Bainimarama "to obey the President who is constitutionally the Commander-in-Chief of the military" and asked him to order "all ranks of the RFMF to vacate all non-military establishments and return to their established camps and to man these based on the approved Regular Peace Establishment".

The Commander had earlier asked the GCC to invite him to their conference as Fiji's President or he would not attend. This was rejected by GCC chairman Ratu Ovini Bokini, which further inflamed relations with the military.
