Chaudhry welcomes return to civilian rule Friday January 05, 2007
The decision by army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama to hand over executive authority to President Ratu Josefa Iloilo has been welcomed by the Fiji Labour Party.
Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has endorsed the mandate given to the interim civilian administration, which includes the introduction of provisions for a Code of Conduct for holders of public offices.
"Freedom of information and the setting up of an anti-corruption unit is also welcomed," he said.
"The specific mandate to help lift the living standards of the poor and the under privileged in society will need to be vigorously implemented to reduce the high level of poverty among our people."
Chaudhry said the mandate provides for good governance. However, he has also cautioned against opportunists who may attempt to take advantage of the situation.
"We expect to see a new direction in the governance of the nation which will lead it to peace, progress and prosperity through unity," he said.
