Firsts above equals

Today marked a day of firsts at the 15th Asian Games as a number of unique moments brought emotion to events as athletes and performers enjoyed the fruits of their hard training, and experienced unique moments for their countries and regions.

Most notably, Tajikistan and UAE can now lay claim to producing true Asian Games champions after they won their first ever gold medals in Asian Games history, with wins in the men’s hammer throw and bodybuilding competitions respectively.

Tajikistan’s 24 year-old hammer thrower Dilshod Nazarov entered his country’s history books after he secured gold at the Khalifa Stadium with a winning throw of 74.43 – well ahead of nearest rivals Ali Zenkawi (73.14) of Kuwait and Japan’s Hiroaki Doi (69.45).

While, at the Al-Dana Banquet Hall at around the same time, UAE’s Mohamed Salem Abdulla Zahmi flexed his muscles to impress and won a first ever Asian Games gold medal for his country in bodybuilding’s men’s 65kg category.

Hosts Qatar also enjoyed a day of firsts at the Games after their three day eventing team claimed its first ever top of the podium finish, matched by a debut gold in taekwondo through Abdulqader Hikamt A Sarhan in the men’s 78kg final.

With track and field enjoying its first day of competition at the Khalifa Stadium, the Asian Games also introduced the triathlon into its competition diary for the first time with China’s Wang Hongni claiming the first triathlon gold in the women’s race, followed by Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Gagg in the men’s competition a short while later.

Away from athletics, Hong Kong, China are guaranteed their first ever badminton gold medal in Asian Games history after 30 year-old Wang Chen prepares to face younger team mate Yip Pui Yin in the women’s singles competition after they both won their semifinal matches at ASPIRE Hall 3.

Finally, in the swimming pool, Japan lost its monopoly over synchronised swimming gold when they lost the top spot for the first time in an Asian Games tournament – this time to Chinese twins Jiang Tingting and Jiang Wenwen.

Today it’s home nation’s eventing gold and silver medallist Abdulla Ali Abdulla Al Ejail. Al Ejail was a vital part of the victorious Qatar team, Awad Mohammed Al Qahtani, Rashid Faraj Alat Al Marri and Ali Mohammed Ali Al Marri, but more importantly for him as an individual he won the silver medal. Just 23 years-old Al Ejail, who works in the Ministry of the Interior, showed maturity as led the way with a clear round in the show jumping on horse Quinten to add to his perfect display in the cross-country. He has been riding only since 1997, but has previous top 10 results in world ranked events before this double triumph.

1995, Dubai-based Lebanese Roy Nasr took up triathlon as a way of getting fit. 11 years later and he found himself taking part in the men’s race at the 15th Asian Games on Friday 8 December at the age of 42. He is Lebanon’s only known triathlete; which also makes him the best. Today he was 24th of 25 finishers. Well done Roy!
