53 Degrees North - New Dublin Outdoor Shop!

Posted by robinb | Sports, Gadgets, Outdoor Gear | Sunday, April 9th, 2006

53 Degrees North

Wow, Just got a leaflet through the door. It seems that 53 Degrees North (website not active yet) have opened.

The shop floor is 12,500sq ft…

Fifty Three Degrees North is a new store concept that provides a one-stop-shop solution for outdoor & lifestyle clothing and accessory needs. Key brands include The North Face, Nike ACG, Quiksilver, Roxy, Oakley, Berghaus, Regatta, Musto.

The brands look great, Arc’terx and a number of others that have previously been unavailable in Ireland. I hope they can get a Salomon deal too, as it would be great to get some more of their products you see on the continent into Ireland.

While I’m not sure if this is Irish owned or not, but 53 degrees North is the latitude of Ireland on the globe.

The brochure looks like this is a little bit of a superstore, like a bit of Chamonix’s Snells transported to Dublin… no doubtfully without the Ice axes though…

Still.. it’s all good! The shop is located on the M50, at Carrickmines ‘The Park’.

This place has been open since before Christmas. And it is Irish owned. The people that were behind the Sprayway shop in Sandyford own 53 North. They have a good spot, but it is focused on clothing for the moment. There is only a small selection of “gear”.

Prices are pretty much in line with the rest of the country. Think a few euro lower than Great Outdoors. But the last time I checked they were not offering the 10% MCI discound.

Pretty Much focused on clothing and prices are expensive. Not much Accessories or “gear” Nothing for Camping.
I found Colemans of Sandyford, Dublin 18 very good for accessories both Camping And Hillwalking.
Thet offer a 15% discount for MCI Members and 10% for scouts and girl guides.

Visited the new store at the weekend in search of snowboards, dissappointed to see it was all clothing, asked the staff and they said they’d be stocking snowboards closer to the winter season, not sure if this is true though. Is there anyone in Ireland ever going to sell snowboards??!?!??!? Surely there is a niche here for one of these new stores.
Oh did find a new store just off Grafton Street that said they will also be selling boards in Sept, its called Surf & Snow.

  • Comment by LAM — September 20, 2006 @ 9:36 am

i work in that shop and they will be selling snowboards at the end of september, we have loades of them in the storeroom waiting, the winter season starts in october so you’ll see the snowboards and other accesories out by then

How come there is no climbing gear in the shop? You sell a lot of clothes for it but not the actually equipment needed to go out and climb!

  • Comment by Robin Blandford — September 21, 2006 @ 9:16 am

    Good question!

Getting equipped for Kilimanjaro in October. Got to 53 degrees north with great enthusiasm. The shop looks great and at first I found a few things that I needed. Good selection of base layers but staff really were not able to give advice on these. Tried to buy 3/4 season sleeping bags but again no help from staff. Did not find anyone experienced or that seemed to know anything about clothing.
Left the store with a couple pairs of socks! not very successful!
Definitely experienced staff are needed. Found all I needed at Millets!!

i made a comment in October 2006 when I was shopping for Kilimanjaro. anway, my next visit there was much better and dealt with a guy named Adam who used to work in great outdoors and he was really good. He gave me great help with jackets and tried to order sleeping bags in time for my trip.
much better experience 2nd time round but that was down to his experience.

Great outdoors is staffed by uninthusiastic condisending people, trained to rip you off and sell you the wrong gear!

  • Comment by eoinod — January 29, 2007 @ 9:48 am

I can’t say i agree with you there John!

  • Comment by charlie j — May 4, 2007 @ 10:33 pm

53 is great…Cool clothes..specially the roxy range and the staff are wayyyyyy nicer & cuter than Great outdoors. Great outdoors rip you off when they can and they’re trained to sell you anything!! 53 all the way. 53 is the way great outdoors should be…You can walk around 53!!!

  • Comment by robinb — May 5, 2007 @ 11:30 am

by chance, do you work for 53?

  • Comment by niamhy — May 10, 2007 @ 9:22 pm

any idea where i could buy a cheap ladies or large girls nice wetsuit for under about €50. im not that bothered about brands once its nice. im only going to use it for 2 weeks during irish college so theres not much point in buying an expensive one. wb please

  • Comment by Aisling — May 10, 2007 @ 9:58 pm

Niamhy I bought mine in a surf shop in Tramore for about €70 but Dunnes Stores sell them also and if you’re small like me you’ll fit into the kids ones. I think they were about €50. They even sell the little shoes.
I think last week Lidl had`them as one of their weekly specials so some of their stores might still have cheap ones. I don’t know much about wet suits so can’t vouch for the quality but if you only need it for 2 weeks it shouldn’t be an issue?

  • Comment by robinb — May 11, 2007 @ 9:12 am

Lidl have wetsuits this month too I think.

  • Comment by niamhy — May 11, 2007 @ 6:03 pm

ye i saw lovely ones in dunnes for only €20 but the kids ones only went up to age 14 and it was too small unfortunately and they dont do ladies ones. i also some lovely ones in lidl aswell but by the time i realised that they were doing them the had been in the stores for a few days and they only had the short ones left and ideally i was looking for a long one as i get cod really easily. I’ve sent my dad to about 10 different lidl stores looking for the long ones but they were all sold out. its not looking good for me is it?? but thanks Aishling and Robinb for the advice! if anyway knows anywhere elce just wb! thanks

  • Comment by Aisling — May 11, 2007 @ 6:22 pm

I was in Lidl today on Grange Road (near`Marlay Park) and they had some but not sure of the sizes. I’m sure all the normal sizes are probably sold out by now.
You could try putting an ad on freecycle. Maybe someone has one they don’t want?

  • Comment by niamhy — May 11, 2007 @ 6:48 pm

That was one of the places my dad had tried yesterday i tink! they only had sizes medium and large! typical all the small sizes were gone. whats feecycle and how do i get onto it??

  • Comment by Aisling — May 11, 2007 @ 6:55 pm

    http://www.freecycle.org/
    Check out this website.
You join your local group (Dublin or Leinster) and post an ad like “Wanted, Wet Suit Dublin South” or whatever. People offer and ask for absolutely anything. The ad gets posted by e-mail to anyone in the group.

It’s one of those yahoo groups.
