Site Genesis

The Baseball Primer grew out of a series of phone calls made between Jim Furtado and Sean Forman during the 1999-2000 winter. We were a little burned out working on the 2000 Big Bad Baseball Annual and were looking for a new direction to go in baseball analysis. We both were concerned that sabermetrics was becoming too obscure and too insulated from the general baseball fan. For instance, neither Sean's father or brother are particularly interested in reading our sabermetric pieces, even though they both are big sports fans. We decided that we needed to look for a slightly different way to present baseball analysis.

Many of the authors here will be familiar from the Big Bad Baseball Annual. We both have written for the BBBA, though not in the last edition. We like the book and the people associated with it, but we wanted to move in a less technical direction. We will accept and review any studies, articles or content (cartoons, photos?) that anyone submits to our site. Please note that the material must be your own work and the better it is the more likely it is that we will use it. If the amount of material is very high, we may not be able to print everything we receive, but we will do our best to work with you and make certain that your material is at least reviewed and considered.

Articles should be sent as plain text files. We will have trouble considering Microsoft Word documents and Excel files. Several of our editors use Linux and will not be able to read these files at all. Articles written in Microsoft Word can be saved as plain text and then sent to us. You should also consider coding in html any needed tables or figures, though we can certainly work with you on this. Please send all necessary files to our editor. If you have questions about what may or may not be appropriate please send questions to the same address.

We look forward to hearing from you.
