First VP leaves Turkmenistan

First Vice President Parviz Davoudi and his entourage, who arrived in Turkmenistan on Sunday to attend the burial ceremony of the late Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov, left the country later in the same day.

Davoudi, accompanied by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, participated at the ceremonies marking farewell to the late Turkmen president as well as his burial this afternoon.

The two ceremonies were also attended by the presidents of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, prime ministers of Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Pakistan, Ukraine and Armenia as well as some officials representing other countries.

Following the demise of Niyazov, Turkmenistan's National Security Council and cabinet assigned Turkmen Vice President and Minister of Health and Medical Industry Gurbanguly Berdimukhamedov as the country's acting president.

Turkmenistan's People's Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming election and approval of the qualifications of presidential candidates.

The late Niyazov passed away on Thursday morning after a heart attack. He was 66 years old.
