A manic guy with bleach-blond hair seized on that to launch a rant about the maximum flame temperature of jet fuel and the physics of molten steel, dismissing recent efforts by the U.S. State Department and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to counter such rampant, freeform "expertise" as yet more "propaganda."

"Idiots!" shrieked a man overhearing him. "You guys probably believe Elvis is still alive."

But if people have doubts about what happened, it shouldn’t be surprising considering the lengths the Bush administration has gone to manipulate 9-11 and distort pre-war intelligence to justify the war in Iraq. And when people needed clear information about the air quality downtown, the feds instead gave them false assurances.

If truth is the first casualty of war, the Bush administration committed a massacre. A startling 36 percent of Americans now believe the Bush administration either perpetrated the attacks or failed to stop them because it wanted to go to war in the Middle East. 

Taking their message straight to ground zero

Forty-two percent of Americans believe the U.S. government and 9-11 commission are in some way covering up the truth of 9-11, according to a Zogby poll in May. 

Particularly egregious is that the Republican co-chair of the 9-11 Commission, Thomas Kean, agreed to be a paid advisor to ABC’s myth-making docudrama "The Path to 9-11," which was scripted by conservatives, and which aired last night amid frequent references to its containing "composite" characters and incidents, and "time compression . . . used for dramatic purposes." 

If the person charged with investigating the "truth" of 9-11 lends his name to a partisan, fictionalized version, what are people supposed to believe?

Now the conspiracy crowd is using the missing WMDS and numerous other omissions and distortions pushed by the Bush administration to justify all sorts of crackpot theories. 

 "Go and research it, find out the truth, 9-11 was an inside job!" syndicated radio host Alex Jones bellowed from a bullhorn during a 2 p.m. rally across the street from ground zero that drew more than 300 people. 

With his folksy baritone and evident love of the spotlight, Jones is the conspiracy left's version of Rush Limbaugh. "The U.S. is being looted by the globalists," he shouted from inside the protest pen, as police commanders grimaced. "They needed the terrorist attacks to get the people behind their agenda. I wish it wasn’t true, that it was just a conspiracy theory. Because it's scary as hell, but it’s the truth. This country is too great to be taken over by a bunch of murderous thugs."

After about an hour, Jones led the crowd on a march to New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s office to lambaste him for supposedly refusing to investigate why the rubble and remains of the World Trade Center were so hastily carted away. 

"The sleeping giant has arisen—we won’t be silenced," declared Jones. He went on to explain to the media how the decision to stage a new Pearl Harbor on 9-11 was made not by Dick Cheney and the neocons, but was dictated from on high by David Rockefeller, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth of England, and the other financiers of the secretive Bilderberg Group that controls world resources from behind the scenes. 

Back at ground zero, the mood had shifted from a solemn ritual to something more akin to a street fair. Evangelicals preaching Armageddon competed with a string quartet, a Japanese Kabuki dancer, and a rally for the "forgotten" undocumented workers who died during the WTC attacks or were sickened cleaning contaminated office buildings. There was even a group lobbying to "free Pakistan." 

It was all too much for Craig Laitta, a contractor from the Upper East Side who balked at a born-again Christian woman bearing a sign proclaiming her support for President Bush.

"I have a personal memory here, at this spot, and you just destroyed it," said Laitta, who lost a friend on 9-11 and helped clear rubble from the pile. "You don’t go to a funeral and make political statements." 

Later, a guy in an FDNY cap nearly punched an anti-war activist parading though the crowds of mourners and onlookers with a neon green sign that shrieked "LIARS!"

But overall, there seemed more willingness from grieving New Yorkers to tolerate dissent, either because people have grown more used to it, or because the "truth" of 9-11 has never seemed more muddied. 

"Everyone is coming out with their own investigations, their own documentaries. At this point, I don’t know what to believe," sighed Claudette, a Jamaican woman from the Bronx who declined to give her last name. 

"It took me five years to come here and stand here. That’s how hurt I am," added Claudette, an insurance claims adjuster who works less than a block away, and who said she lost friends in the collapse. 

Claudette wasn't troubled by the political sniping around her as she stared up at the twin columns of light projected into the night sky during Monday's closing ceremony. "I worked down here for 18 years. This is where I used to shop. Here will always be my towers. I’m still imagining my towers," she said, her eyes glistening.

Hey, you interviewed me, and i was right there standing next to Alex Jones when you gave the interview. You said you were going to report this fairly, now you're calling them "crackpot theories"?? You're making him out to be some sort of conspiracy nutcase, which couldnt be further from the truth. And for the record, I was RIGHT UP FRONT, police commanders never "grimaced". Actually, a police commander was very polite to Alex and helped him figure out the safest route to Spizter's building. Another ranked officer in a white uniform personally escorted Alex and his followers which included myself to 1 Police Plaza. If anything the police showed SUPPORT for Mr. Jones and the ones who didn't ignored him completely and showed no emotion whatsoever. And we were a hell of a lot more than 300 strong.

I agree I should not have cast Alex Jones as the Rush Limbaugh of the conspiracy "left". On closer inspection, he appears more of a nativist libertarian given his open support for the Minutemen. As for crackpot, yes, that's a strong word, but to say that 9-11 was ordered by Queen Beatrix and the Bilderberg group is pretty crazy. Anyone who believes the world is controlled by a tiny elite needs to travel more. I agree there are many unanswered questions about the causes and events of 9-11. But reading through what evidence there is, I remain profoundly unconvinced that that WTC towers were blown up. It is far scarier to acknowledge that there is an violent extremist Islamist movement that U.S. policies in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere helped foster, which we don't control, and which is fundamentally opposed to both Western secularism and US policies abroad. Indeed, al Qaeda's critique of globalism is in some ways very similar to the one espoused by Alex Jones. As for the size of the rally, it was very hard to gauge with all the other people there to visit ground zero. I originally eyeballed it at around 400 given there were people on both sides of the street. Another journalist said 300 so I settled for "more than 300." It certainly wasn't 1000, as some activists there were claiming. As for the guy with the neon sign, I thought he was opposed to the US war in Iraq, which puts him there as an antiwar protester, regardless of his position on Afghanistan, which I didn't hear, but which nevertheless many in the antiwar movement, to various degrees, share.

I worked in the WTC in 1991 for 3 months as a consultant for a company called Fiduciary Trust (just about everyone employed there is dead). I hated that place. Whenever I came back from lunch, whatever I ate would try to egress from my throat when I rode the elevator to 78. On windy days you could hear the building creak and feel it sway. It was very unsettling. They were two very ugly souless buildings too boot. I quit for those reasons and vowed never to return. I saw the first tower hit on TV and realized that the plane would have come right thru my floor. I have always been lucky like that. I didn't see the second plane hit because I was late for my tee time but when I came back that evening and turned on the TV I saw that there was nothing left of those god awful buildings. I felt bad for the occupants and the people involved in the mess but I can't say I miss the buildings at all. I don't know if the government had something to do with taking them down (Maybe Silverstein did it to collect the insurance), but for anyone with any aestehtic sense, the empty hole is alot nicer looking than what was there before. In my opinion, they should just cover it up and make it a park with a monument. There are way too many buildings already. They could never rent all the space back then and who in their right monds are goning to work up that high after seeing something like waht happened that day. Can't we all just move on?!

I do understand it is unfathomable, but it is true. The attacks on 9/11 were not committed by Arab Muslims, it was a psychological operation carried out by criminal elements in OUR OWN GOVERNMENT. The sooner we wake up, the sooner we save our world.

To the Author Ms. Ferguson -- Thank you for covering the presence of 9/11 Truth at Ground Zero. As you are probably aware, the national media did not cover this and it deserves attention.

Until a few months ago I would have thought these were a bunch of conspiracy crackpots too -- now I know we were lied to and 9/11 was most definitely a false flag terror attack. Any research into this area will show that this is nothing new for our government. Just watch Alex Jones' documentary "Terrorstorm" on Google. It's all verifiable.

Also if you mention NIST, you should mention the fact that they are "considering whether hypothetical blast events could have played a role in initiating the collapse" in Building 7. The official account of the 9-11 attack on America is actually a conspiracy theory, given that it lacks much credible proof. I find it telling that those who attack anyone who asks the hard questions about 9/11 quickly descends into name calling and insults. I saw the Popular Mechanics Editor on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman.

This "editor" of a major magazine was smearing Dylan Avery and the other producer of Loose Change, the 9/11 documentary, with names like "holacost denyer," and "JFK conspiracist," etc. This is childish and irresponsible behaviour by our so-called "media."

You'll note on this board and most boards, that the majority of those questioning the official story are responsible adults with probing questions, that must be investigated.

Those who attack them usually haven't looked into 9/11 very deeply, and simply call those of us that are demanding answers stupid names like "tin foil hat wearers."

Most of the people I know questioning 9/11 are well educated professionals who look at the Bush Admin's official conspiracy theory . . . and have to be honest and say it does not make sense. Controlled demolition of the WTCs and an orchestrated US Air Force stand down using multiple war games held mysteriously on 9/11, which confused FAA and DOD employees, points to an inside govt. job.

This wouldn't be hard to figure out. Who ordered the war games on 9/11? Why didn't that person call them off when the first plane hit the first tower?

Why did the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) which "supposedly" investigated the WTCs collapses not test for explosives in the debris?

Any forensics would have included those tests given that the WTCs were the first three steel reinforced skyscrapers in engineering history to completely collapse due to fire and/or external damage. WTC 7 wasn't even hit by a plane.

At the point NIST investigated the logical testing of explosives wouldn't even have been a "conspiracy theory." At that point one would have thought that perhaps the terrorists planted bombs, or had a truck near, or had explosives on the planes. It would have been professional forensic procedures to look for explosives traces.

The fact that NIST "DID NOT EVEN TEST FOR EXPLOSIVES" is very telling. Coupled with years of watching the Bush Administration try to stop the 9/11 investigations, and the way the Republicans in Congress treated the 9/11 widows like crap and tried to stop their creation of the 9/11 Commission.

Then the way Bush tried to get Henry Kissenger to run the Commission investigation, and then Philip Zelikow (Bush Admin and Rice confidant) ran it. The 9/11 widows demanded Zelikow step down and not head the Commission when they learned of his role in the Bush Admin. The Jersey Girls were ignored, and Zelikow steered the 9/11 Commission away from any of the hard questions.

Yes here we all are again just sitting on our backside's talking about 911, just like we'v been doing for five long year's, and that's five long years for these so called leader's to plan the next one. Enough said.

I couldn't read or watch any mainstream media outlet that didn't do a story debunking 9/11 "conspiracy theories" around the five year anniversary. You know, looking back at what I actually wrote, I wasn't so wrong when I called Alex Jones the "conspiracy left's version of Rush Limbaugh." Paleoconservatives may claim him as their own, but there sure were lots of lefty folks cheering him on outside ground zero in NYC on 9-11. In fact, left-oriented "9-11 truth" activists seem to embrace him as much as the rightwing ones do--no doubt because he's good at broadcasting their theories.

The story I wrote was not intended as any blow-by-blow analysis of the many outstanding questions that surround 9-11. I was down there to report what I saw at ground zero on Monday, and I did, including grimacing police. I interviewed Jones on the street not to sandbag him, but with an open mind, to see what he had to say.

Obviously if you read what I wrote, I don't simply accept what the government or the 9-11 Commission says about 9-11. My point in the story was to say there's been such an abuse of truth by the Bush administration, the American public doesn't know what to believe. I referred to the numerous omissions of the 9-11 Commission report, as well as the manipulation and mistruths that Bush used to take us to war in Iraq. There are indeed many outstanding questions about NORAD's response on 9-11, why warnings of the attacks were ignored, why Bin Laden has not been caught. There is also a long history of official conniving to protect US oil interests abroad.

But I think people who obsess about the buildings being blown up are leading people down the wrong rabbit hole. I also agree with Alex Cockburn that those who believe Bush and Cheney masterminded the attacks woefully ignore the incompetence of this administration (and previous ones) --as well the bumbled response of Rudy Giuliani for citing the city's Emergency Command Center at WTC 7 in the first place and leaving the FDNY with inoperable Motorola radios, which Wayne Barrett's and Dan Collins' new book exposes.

These conspiracy nuts need to get therapy or get a life. They are children who crave attention. Every single "fact" they rely on -- every single one -- is false or grossly distorted. It's a free country so I would not deprive them of their right to let everyone know what a-holes they are. But to give them even the tiniest shred of credibility is to totally shed any pretense of reason.

Many firefighters and police thanked us for being there, many on duty. Family Members also stood side by side with us.

The book Debunking 9/11 Myths is a great example of Yellow Journalism that Hearst Publications is well known for. Don't take my word for it, let the people decide. From the moment I put it on, a pair of ladies walked up to me and asked if they could get one too. Conspiracy theorists can't even get along with each other. Judy Wood and Morgan Reynolds have left the Scolars for 9/11 because of their disagreement with Steven Jones. They claim Jones used no peer review for his research. They also believe no planed were involved in the attacks. That's right. All you people who saw a plane on 9-11...it was a hologram. The best part of these theories is the WTC7 controlled demolition argument. I actually worked there for three years up to and including 9-11. We were squashed together like sardines after the Smith Barney merger (I worked for Salomon) and a number of floors had activity 24x7 (trading floors) and most folks lived 6 to 7 days a week.

Here's the thng. I never saw any construction projects going on. In my job, I was working on a project that made me hit most floors(28-44)during the week. I never saw any evidence of construction besides the construction of a few meeting rooms.

On 9-11 WTC7 was hit with debris from the minute the first plane hit. After walking down from the 43rd floor 40 minutes later, we were forced to leave via the back because so much debris had hit the building and blocked the fromt entrance.

My question is this. Why won't Jason Bermas, Dylan Avery or Korey Rowe look to interview anyone who worked at the buliding? Because they won't like the answers, that's why.

4 CLAIMS AND 4 FACTS ABOUT THE PLANES:

CLAIM 1: Photographs and video footage shot just before United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center show an object underneath the fuselage at the base of the right wing. The film "911 In Plane Site" and the Web site LetsRoll911.org claim that no such object is found on a stock Boeing 767. They speculate that this "military pod" is a missile, a bomb or a piece of equipment on an air-refueling tanker. LetsRoll911.org points to this as evidence that the attacks were an "inside job" sanctioned by "President George Bush, who planned and engineered 9/11."

FACT: One of the clearest, most widely seen pictures of the doomed jet's undercarriage was taken by photographer Rob Howard and published in New York magazine and elsewhere. A digital scan of the original photo was sent to Ronald Greeley, director of the Space Photography Laboratory at Arizona State University, an expert at analyzing images to determine the shape and features of formations based on shadow and light effects. After studying the high-resolution image and comparing it to photos of a Boeing 767-200ER's undercarriage, Greeley dismissed the notion that the Howard photo reveals a "pod." In fact, the photo reveals only the Boeing's right fairing, a pronounced bulge that contains the landing gear. He concludes that sunlight glinting off the fairing gave it an exaggerated look. "Such a glint causes a blossoming (enlargement) on film," he wrote, "which tends to be amplified in digital versions of images--the pixels are saturated and tend to 'spill over' to adjacent pixels." When asked about pods attached to civilian aircraft, Fred E. Culick, professor of aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology, gave a blunter response: "That's bull. They're really stretching."

CLAIM 2: No fighter jets were scrambled from any of the 28 Air Force bases within close range of the four hijacked flights. "On 11 September Andrews had two squadrons of fighter jets with the job of protecting the skies over Washington D.C.," says the Web site emperors-clothes.com. "They failed to do their job." "There is only one explanation for this," writes Mark R. Elsis of StandDown.net. "Our Air Force was ordered to Stand Down on 9/11."

FACT: On 9/11 there were only 14 fighter jets on alert in the contiguous 48 states. There is no computer network or alarm that automatically alerts the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) of missing planes - perhaps there should be, but that's another matter entirely. "They had to pick up the phone and literally dial us," says Maj. Douglas Martin, public affairs officer for NORAD. Boston Center, one of 22 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regional ATC facilities, called NORAD's Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) three times: at 8:37 am EST to inform NEADS that Flight 11 was hijacked; at 9:21 am to inform the agency, mistakenly, that Flight 11 was headed for Washington (the plane had hit the North Tower 35 minutes earlier); and at 9:41 am to (erroneously) identify Delta Air Lines Flight 1989 from Boston as a possible hijacking. The New York ATC called NEADS at 9:03 am to report that United Flight 175 had been hijacked--the same time the plane slammed into the South Tower. Within minutes of that first call from Boston Center, NEADS scrambled two F-15s from Otis Air Force Base in Falmouth, Mass., and three F-16s from Langley Air National Guard Base in Hampton, Va.

Why couldn't ATC find the hijacked flights? When the hijackers turned off the planes' transponders, which broadcast identifying signals, ATC had to search 4500 identical radar blips crisscrossing the country's busiest air corridor. As to NORAD's radar, it rings the continent - looking outward for threats, not inward. Pre-9/11, flights originating in the States were not seen as threats and NORAD wasn't prepared to track them.

CLAIM 3: On Sept. 11, FOX News broadcast a live phone interview with FOX employee Marc Birnbach. 911inplanesite.com states that "Bernback" saw the plane "crash into the South Tower." "It definitely did not look like a commercial plane," Birnbach said on air. "I didn't see any windows on the sides." Coupled with fuzzy photographs and videos of Flight 175 that lack the resolution to show windows, the "Bernback" statement has fueled one of the most widely referenced 9/11 conspiracy theories - specifically, that the South Tower was struck by a military cargo plane or a fuel tanker.

FACT: Birnbach, who was a freelance videographer with FOX News at the time, was more than 2 miles southeast of the WTC, in Brooklyn, when the plane flew over. He says that, in fact, he did not see the plane strike the South Tower; he says he only heard the explosion.

FACT: W. Gene Corley, a licensed structural engineer with Construction Technology Laboratories, a consulting firm based in Skokie, Ill., studied the airplane wreckage. Corley and his team photographed aircraft debris on the roof of WTC 5, including a chunk of fuselage that clearly had passenger windows. "It's from the United Airlines plane that hit Tower 2," Corley stated flatly. In reviewing crash footage taken by an ABC news crew, Corley was able to track the trajectory of the fragments he studied--including a section of the landing gear and part of an engine--as they tore through the South Tower, exited from the building's north side and fell from the sky.

CLAIM 4: "It has been standard operating procedures for decades to immediately intercept off-course planes that do not respond to communications from air traffic controllers," says the Web site oilempire.us. "When the Air Force 'scrambles' a fighter plane to intercept, they usually reach the plane in question in minutes."

FACT: Whether for good or ill, this is simply untrue. In the decade before 9/11, NORAD intercepted only one civilian plane over North America: golfer Payne Stewart's Learjet, in October 1999. With passengers and crew unconscious from cabin decompression, the plane lost radio contact but remained in transponder contact until it crashed. Even so, it took an F-16 1 hour and 22 minutes to reach the stricken jet. Rules in effect back then, and on 9/11, prohibited supersonic flight on intercepts. Prior to 9/11, all other NORAD interceptions were limited to offshore Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ). "Until 9/11 there was no domestic ADIZ," FAA spokesman Bill Schumann stated. After 9/11, NORAD and the FAA increased cooperation, setting up hotlines between ATCs and NORAD command centers, according to officials from both agencies. NORAD has also increased its fighter coverage and has installed radar to monitor airspace over the continent.

I agree with the poster above who says the Leftist knee-jerk reaction to the 9/11 Truth movement is really harming all of us.

If I don't misrepresent S. Ferguson's point of view, she implied 9/11 Truth proponants do not accept what is "far scarier to acknowledge that there is an violent extremist Islamist movement that U.S. policies in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere helped foster, which we don't control, and which is fundamentally opposed to both Western secularism and US policies abroad." This is just false.

Does anyone really believe the people in the 9/11 movement think they have more "control" over their own government, than over some reputed scattered "terrorists?"

NOT.

By that, you would imply people still believe in elections, even after the last two were stolen. I mean, even Greg Palast, who thinks 9/11 Truth is nuts and many other researchers, know the last two elections were stolen. That's hardly cynical anymore.

Do you really feel it is "scarier" to have terrorists hanging and hiding around, than to feel one's own government, which is supposed to protect, defend and represent us, is a bunch of foul sick traitors? Who are capable of anything?

(In comparison, the betrayal of a pedophile priest, who at least allows his victims to live, looks insignificant.)

In fact, many people refuse to look at the evidence for 9/11 skepticism simply because they couldn't bear to face its conclusion. I have met many such people.

Where is this, "It's so much more comforting to think the government did it" coming from? Stenographing recycled talking points?

The 9/11 Truth position gives much less peace of mind than the status quo because of which is the enormous power of the USA State and the, subsequent to 9/11, stripping away of our civil rights under the cover of law and "protecting us from terror."

The reality is that the horror of 9/11 Truth is what keeps people believing the government's lies..(In an abridged, "hang-out" form, or otherwise.)

It's not fear which causes our recognition, but emotional courage.

"Indeed, al Qaeda's critique of globalism is in some ways very similar to the one espoused by Alex Jones."

This is another zinger from the catalog of Government/Mass Media talking points i.e. ~"The 9/11 Truth people are in cahoots with the Terrorists." That tactic is really so transparent and convenient.

S. Ferguson brought these two points, if I represent her points fairly, correct me if I'm wrong:

9/11 Truthers don't admit the fear which comes with being an American, i.e. one who rips off the rest of the world, and they are too timid to experience the guilty fear of potential retribution, so they escape into a fantasy ~ the government did it. Isn't that oh so more comforting?

And

S. Ferguson also promoted the idea 9/11 truthers agree with the "terrorists" and the 3rd world people whom we, as a "country," have wronged. (obviously not personally) (And to be more exact it's really not our "government," who does the wrong but a global, probably corporate, but definitely private, elite who have highjacked the U.S.A. and its Media.)

These two things contradict:

How can we both be too weak to admit that the rest of the world is against us - - that they hate us, and at the same time be allied with those very same foreign America haters?

The psychology and projection in this becomes very obvious.

Actually, one can believe the rest of the world has reason to hate us, and would like to strike back AND that the U.S. government engineered this 9/11 strike as a pretext for a pre-emptive war, to get its Empire straight and to create a means to toughen up against dissent/"terrorists" here at home.

So the real accusation against 9/11 Truth is that we are "terrorists" and mentally ill because we don't turn a blind eye whatever our "government" does to supposedly secure our "way of life?" Actually we admit and cry out - our government is not on our side - which is extremely traditional American.

To my stunned amazement American guilt, fear - which derives from that guilt, and the forces of conformist thinking, strikes blind many USA-ers, and all "pundits," Right and Left both.

Claim:transponders were turned off

It is a well-known fact that the transponder of UA 93 - like the ones of the other hijacked airplanes - was switched off. But much less known are two further incidents: the transponder was back on at a later point, and the airplane's radar blip vanished from the controller's radar screens several minutes before the crash.

Even without transponders, FAA & others can use primary radar returns to determine a flight's position (not altitude)

Still doesn't explain why our few fighter jets were dispatched to defend the Atlantic Ocean and then took their time, traveling at a third of their max. speed, to return to defend America.

Think about it when Congress is asked to approve
$361 million per F-22 aircraft (In April 2006, the Government Accountability Office estimated the cost)

Why the heck do we need supersonic fighter jets if they aren't flown at supersonic speeds to defend US?

The problem with most of you conspiracy theroists is that you do not take any evidence into account that does not support you argument. If even one of you could split the middle on this issue then maybe your position would be easier to swallow. You are exremist of a diffrent kind. You are of the same mind set that radical right winger's who kill people to save people(anit-abortion movement). None of you truly represents America you are just as shamless as our Government when it come to covering up facts that don't support your arguments. You people are no better than Bush.

I am neither Left nor Right. But they seem to be a better alternative than Alex Jones. Would you people prefer he run the country. I love America and there are alot of things wrong with the U.S. but please stop bashing America. And I'm refering the NWO and things of that sort. Please if you are going to present an argument Leave the Queen of England out of it and NWO. Because there is alot of compelling evidence to support a better investigation, like the melting point of metal and then piggy back frivolous comments to the good hard evidence you contaminat it and no one wants to listen.

Please calm down. Take a minute to think about other explanations for how the Towers could have come down.
