The Power List 2006

13) TOM CRUISE

RANK LAST YEAR: 14.

TITLE:
The Missionary.

CAREER DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE:
$2.8 billion.

2005 BOX OFFICE: $234 million.

STATUS REPORT: His record as a star who opens blockbusters is solid, and M:I:III should be a case in point. Raked in around $70 million on his share of the last Mission, but this time new Paramount boss Brad Grey scaled him down from his usual 30 percent, and cut the film's budget by a reported 10 percent. Switched from sister Lee Anne DeVette's guidance to an old-pro P.R. firm, but kept up Scientology rants, delighting tabloids and cynics and inspiring a Scary Movie 4 sketch.

NEXT: Likeliest candidates are the western 3:10 to Yuma and Adrian Lyne's Two Minutes to Midnight.

YES, IT’S TRUE: Has the richest deal around on DVD sales. Most gross players divvy up 20 cents of every buck of video revenue, but Cruise sups on a share of up to 65 percent of the pot.
