Rachel Harrison & Scott Lyall
When Hangover Becomes Form
March 31 to May 28, 2006
Rachel Harrison, who is well-known for her enigmatic mixed-media
sculptures, and Scott Lyall, who is recognized for his elaborate installations,
were invited by Daniel Adler to collaborate; an approach that is not typical
for either artist. Harrison and Lyall developed their art practices within
a parallel dialogue, but they approached this unique opportunity to work
together by trying to undermine their aesthetic similarities and draw
attention to the seams of their collaborative process. Nevertheless, When
Hangover Becomes Form was a coherent and visually engaging installation
that was reflective of each of their distinctive and complex formal vocabularies.
Rachel Harrison has exhibited at the 2003 Whitney Biennial and had major
solo exhibitions at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Bergen Kunsthall in Bergen,
Norway and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Scott Lyall has exhibited
nationally and internationally at Susan Hobbs Gallery in Toronto, Greene
Naftali Gallery in New York and KunstWerke in Berlin, with his first major
solo exhibition in Canada at the Art Gallery of York University, 2002.
When Hangover Becomes Form was curated by Daniel Adler was
a co-presentation between the Contemporary Art Gallery and LACE (Los Angeles
Contemporary Exhibitions). Dan Adler is assistant professor of modern
and contemporary art history at the University of New Orleans.
