EnGro is the pioneer and leading manufacturer of Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS). In North Asia alone, we currently produce over 1.7 million tons of GGBS annually.

Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS or GGBFS) is obtained by quenching molten iron blastfurnace slag (a by-product of iron and steel making) in water or stream, to produce a glassy granular product that is then dried and ground into a fine powder.

Through intensive research and development, we developed a patented high-pressure roller press process that ensures high fineness, high reactivity, good particle size distribution, and quality consistency. With state-of-art processing equipment, the physical and chemical properties of GGBS/GGBFS are continuously monitored and controlled during manufacture to ensure that the finished product complies with national and international standards (e.g. GB/T 18046, KS F 2563, BS 6699 and ASTM C989).

Applications
GGBS/GGBFS is a green construction material used to make durable concrete structures in combination with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and/or other pozzolanic materials. GGBS/GGBFS has been widely used in Europe, and increasingly in the United States and in Asia (particularly in Japan and Singapore) for its superiority in concrete durability, extending the lifespan of buildings from fifty years to a hundred years.

Two major uses of GGBS/GGBFS are:

(a) In the production of quality-improved slag cement, namely Portland Blastfurnace cement (PBFC) and High Slag Blastfurnace cement (HSBFC), with GGBS/GGBFS content ranging typically from 30-70%; and
   
(b) In the production of ready-mixed or site-batched durable concrete. The technical benefits, which GGBS/GGBFS imparts to concrete, include:
   
 
  • Better workability, making placing and compaction easier,
  • Lower temperature rise, reducing the risk of thermal cracking in massive concrete structures,
  • Elimination of the risk of damages caused by Alkali-silica Reaction (ASR),
  • High resistance to chloride ingress, reducing the risk of reinforcement corrosion, and
  • High resistance to attacks by sulphate and other chemicals.

The use of GGBS/GGBFS substitutes Portland cement by 30-70%. Manufacturing of Portland cement is a major contributor of greenhouse gases, responsible for about 5% of all global carbon dioxide emissions. By comparison, manufacturing of GGBS/GGBFS requires less than a fifth the energy and produces less than a tenth of the carbon dioxide emissions. This is in line with the Group's commitment towards a green environment.

High Slag Blastfurnace Cement (HSBFC)
High Slag Blastfurnace Cement (HSBFC), our high performance specialty cement, is a homogeneous blend of Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS/GGBFS) complying with BS 4246, SS 476, DIN 1164, JIS R5211, and ASTM C595. Its use is well established in the construction industry in producing durable concrete. HSBFC is designed to ensure consistent slag content and to enhance concrete performance.

Benefits of using HSBFC

  • Reduce the risk of early-age thermal cracking especially in mass concreting;
  • Improve the resistance to sulphate and chloride attacks of concrete, especially for marine structures;
  • Eliminate the risk of damage caused by Alkali-silica Reaction (ASR) in concrete;
  • Improve long-term strength development of concrete.

HSBFC possesses other features such as good workability, prolonged slump retention, higher ultimate compressive strength and higher flexural strength. The more aesthetically pleasing appearance of lighter colour in HSBFC concrete can soften the visual impact of large structures.

Typical uses of HSBFC
With the superior characteristics over OPC and Sulphate-resisting cement (SRC), HSBFC is highly recommended for use in the following areas:

  • Marine structures
  • Basement or sub-structure works
  • Dams, reservoirs and hydro-electric projects
  • Sewerage treatment plant
  • Foundation such as piles in soils containing sulphates/chlorides
  • Underground pre-cast/in-situ-placing concrete structures such as tunnels
  • Bigger concrete structures such as transfer beams
  • Pre-cast sewerage pipes
