As you may have guessed from my last post, I've been working on identifying podcasts from among the thousands of feeds you have submitted to the site. Now, in addition to the Top 100 feeds, you can keep an eye on the top podcasts.

A few features I've been working on this past week --
Share Your OPML periodcally will scan Dave's new ping server for updates and refresh the subscription lists for any updated OPML files. In addition, we're polling all remote-hosted OPML subscription lists (as opposed to uploaded subscription lists) for changes on a daily basis.
I wasn't too thrilled with the look of the RSS Aggregator, so I worked on that a bit and I think it looks a lot better.
I also spent a fair amount of time tweaking some of the database queries -- backend things, but I think there's a noticable improvement in speed and in showing you what you expect to see.
Finally, I've been working on what I think will be a really nice feature relating to podcasting that I hope we'll roll out very soon.
Share Your OPML now has an RSS aggregator that is automatically subscribed to the feeds in the Top 100. The aggregator itself is powered by Dave Winer's NewsRiver aggregator, and it updates every 10 minutes.
After the success of our first day on Monday, the last thing I expected to wake up to today was problems with the server -- but, boy did we have problems with the server!
Those of you who tried to use the service starting late last night (my time) and continuing through most of today no doubt experienced all sorts of difficulty. I'm really sorry about that. Here's what happened in a nutshell.
Essentially, one of our database queries was not properly optimized -- that's webadmin-speak for I dropped the ball. Under other circumstances, that oversight probably never would have come to light. Unfortunately, that database query was the guts to one of the pages users most wanted to link to on their blogs. And when the search bots started crawling those links, we got crushed.
Then, as if that weren't enough, while I was diagnosing the problem this morning, trying to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything else, one of the database tables got corrupted, which in turn caused nearly every query on the database to come to a grinding halt.
Both of those problems have been solved. Hopefully, that'll be the worst hiccup we suffer.
Bottom line: we didn't roll out any new features today.
