More industry banter comes with the Wii's increasing success in the market. Sony America spokesperson Dave Karakker has commented on he Wii's performance in comparison to the Playstation 3 in a recent interview with the New York Times.

According to Next-Gen.biz, Karakker noted that the Playstation 3 shouldn't be compared to Nintendo's Wii, as "Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else."

Nintendo added their two cents on the allegations of console shortages due to low shipments as "absolutely inaccurate".

I wish I was rich enough to think of £200 as an impulse buy.

Ah my poor SONY how the table's have turned.

Nintendo are the big dogs now they will just have to take a back seat and watch Nintendo sell millions upon millions of Wii's and DS's.

Quite different from Peter Moore's comments praising the Wii.

SONY feel threatened.

I know a guy who considers £200 an impulse buy. Irritating.

Yeah, Sony are just generally acting threatened at the moment, still on damage control thanks to their streak of bad luck. We'll have to wait and see in March and beyond who comes out on top.

All my console purchases were impulse buys.
I think 90% of consoles sold(on all sides) in their respective launch periods are impluse buys.

Why does it matter anyway?

LMAO

well...i sorta impulse bought my Xbox360, Grumbler came on MSN and told me he recieved his. I went into town and just flung £320 on the desk and said gimme my xbox.

Still i know what you mean.

I hate it when the 'big guns' lose. Its like in football, if you ever see Man United,Chelsea or Arsenal lose to a lower league team like Stockport County or Sheffield United then they show no sportsmanship! Fucking cunts

Sony are doing the same. I mean first they call the DS gimmicky and the Wii an Impulse. Jeez

I kina' bought the Wii out of impulse at the time, mostly because Twilight Princess wasn't coming out on the GC at the same time. Other wise I wouldn't have one now and I would get one when either Galaxy, Corruption, or Brawl came out.

But I regret nothing.

You've gotta love Sony's PR. They've not learnt a thing in regards to underestimating Nintendo despite the DS rubbing its crotch full of sales right in their faces every week and are generally acting like arseholes - much like Nintendo were years ago when they buggered everything up with third parties.

Remember this choice quote from DS launch by Phil Harrison?

The touch screen feature on Nintendo's DS is a 'gimmick', whilst the handheld is nothing more than 'an irrelevance' when it comes to predicting the success of the PSP. That's the view of Sony's VP of studios Phil Harrison, who made the remarks in an interview with trade magazine MCV.

'The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance,' claimed Harrison. 'Those formats don’t appear in our planning. It’s not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it’s the truth.'

From there, Harrison went on to target the touch screen feature of Nintendo's handheld, stating that, 'It’s fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won’t have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.'

'Nintendo knows its target audience, because it has really narrowed that down,' continued Harrison. 'It’s pretty much defined by a boy or girl’s ability to admire Pokémon.

At the rate Wii is selling at the moment, we'll probably be looking back on these quotes and thinking about them in the same way as this one.

Hehe I remember Phil Harrison said a year back that "the PS2 is guaranteed to be the number one present for Christmas, along with the PSP at number two."

Even if it was fact that its an impluse buy is not an excuse Sony.

Nintendo create something people want, and will buy it on a wimm. (if theres stocks).

THATS THE WHOLE POINT of making a successfull product.

You dont want to people to sit down and rationalise the price.
Because, frankly, the PS3 dosnt stand up to rationalisation.

99% of people dont care about bluray, so what you got is a £450 console that dosnt look to be getting any really killer games for at least a year.

If you, Sony, think That price is reasonable, then of course you think £180 is impluse buy.

So...

A Wii, £180, with the most fun sports game ever invented that the whole family can play.

Or, £450, with only the promise of games to come in the future mearly because of the brand name of sony?

Actually, thats true.

The PSP has suffered a lot more to its own faults, then though Nintendo grabbing the market.

Lack of interesting games, much less practically to play on the move, PS2ness, PR problems with dead pixals and sticking buttons "Its a design feature").

The PSP didn't fail because of Nintendo, it failed because of Sony.

Arrogance, and overconfidence.
Sony is the new, old, Nintendo.

(only without the good 1st party games ;) )

Well you guys are looking at this as if it was your currency he was alking about.

£200 is $392.64, basically the price of the 360 premium in the US.

$250 is on the brink of an impulse buy.

Impulse buy? How many stores do you know at the moment have Wiis to buy on impulse?
Besides, didnt Sony also go on record to say the DS was a kneejerk reaction?
Shows how much they know.
