Our Mission: Highlands Regional Medical Center, in conjunction with its employees,
medical staff and other community health resources will strive to develop
a healthier community.

Our Vision: Highlands Regional Medical Center is an independent health care organization which:

  • Serves the communities of the Big Sandy Area;
  • Provides health care services that are accessible to the community served;
  • Provides high quality services with respect to customer satisfaction and clinical quality; is high performing with respect to organizational efficiency, effectiveness and financial soundness.

Highlands Regional Medical Center is a 184 bed (166 acute care/18 subacute), not-for profit, community owned and operated healthcare facility. Highlands is located in the scenic mountains of Eastern Kentucky between the communities of Prestonsburg and Paintsville. The area is noted for its beautiful foliage, in particular for the yellow, red, and gold hues of the leaves as they change colors in early Fall. Highlands is also located midway between Paintsville Lake and Jenny Wiley State Park and lake. Both lakes are noted for their Bass fishing, evergreen pine trees, and abundant mountain scenery.

Like many other regional facilities throughout the country, Highlands provides healthcare services to a number of counties. Highlands’s immediate service area is Floyd, Johnson, Martin and Magoffin Counties with a combined population of over 90,000 residents. In addition, people from over ten surrounding counties come to Highlands to take advantage of the wide variety of specialty medical services available at Highlands and in Highlands Clinic.
Highlands has a history rich in community involvement, and was founded almost 30 years ago by a group of concerned citizens from each of the four counties who, working together in a collaborative effort, established a regional medical center to provide high quality healthcare services to people living in this rural area. Martin and Magoffin Counties, even today, have no hospitals and Highlands is working to provide outreach rural health clinics in each of them to provide care to their residents. In the southern part of Floyd County, Highlands operates Harold Primary Care, a rural health clinic located in the community of Harold, Ky. The clinic is staffed by a Board Certified Family Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Practitioner and offers care to rural residents that may not have a family physician or access to transportation. These endeavors help Highlands meet part of their Mission Statement that pertains to providing health care services that are accessible to the community served.

Highlands Medical Staff consists of over 100 physicians and medical specialists. These physicians represent family practice, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, orthopedics, urology, otolaryngology and other fields of medicine. Most of the physician offices are located in Prestonsburg, Paintsville and the outlying areas. Highlands Medical Office Building, located on the main campus, has ten physicians’ offices and is home to Highlands Clinic. Highlands Clinic is a specialty care clinic offering 25 areas of specialty medicine and is staffed by physicians from the University of Kentucky and other medical specialists from around the state. These physicians travel to the clinic on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to provide consultant or follow-up care in areas such as neurosurgery, oncology, cardio-thoracic, and high-risk prenatal care, eliminating the need for patients to travel 120 miles to Lexington to see a specialist. Highlands offers a second Highlands Clinic location in Highlands Paintsville Medical Offices. Highlands is constantly working to recruit new physicians and offer additional new services in Highlands Clinic.

New to Highlands this year is the addition of a state of the art lithotripsy machine for the treatment of kidney stones, the reopening of Highlands Oncology and Chemotherapy Services, the addition of a new spiral CAT Scanner, and Turning Point, a program offered by Highlands and Geriatric Resources Inc. to meet the emotional and medical needs of seniors and adults ages 18 and over.

Highlands Vision Statement is that Highlands, in conjunction with its employees, medical staff and other community health resources, will strive to develop a healthier community. Highlands Regional Medical Center, along with it’s parent company Consolidated Health Systems, is working to assure the continued delivery of needed healthcare services by promoting quality, performance improvement, efficiency and productivity, and facilitating the consolidation of resources and continuing to explore alliances with other healthcare providers to better address community needs. You, our customer/patient, are the reason we exist and we are committed to providing you with high quality healthcare services.
