Tuesday, 14 March 2006

On Sunday 19th March the United 4 Belarus campaign, co-ordinated by Liberal Democrat Youth and Students, will join members of the Belarussian diaspora in the UK to demonstrate for democracy in Belarus; Europe’s last dictatorship.

The protest is taking place on the date of the Belarussian elections, which independent reports have already confirmed will not be conducted to anywhere near the required standards of fair fairness or propriety.

The Liberal Democrat Youth and Students (LDYS), the organisation representing young Liberal Democrats, this morning launched a nationwide call for young people to pledge their support for bringing freedom to Europe's last dictatorship in Belarus as part of their United 4 Belarus campaign at www.frappr.com/insupportofbelarus

Supporters will pledge to put a candle in their window on the evening of March 19th at the same time as votes are counted just a couple thousand miles away at the close of the Presidential elections in Belarus. The candle has become a symbol of freedom in Belarus, a country where most forms of expression are greeted with a personal visit from the KGB.

“The United Kingdom has been slow to take an interest in the upcoming March 19th Belarussian Presidential elections in March where Europe’s last dictatorship will try its best to hang onto power”
