THE BOMFORDS OF WORCESTER
This family tree was started by Frances Emily Bomford b 1873 d 1959. She passed it to Christopher Heming Bomford, her nephew, b 1911. In 2001, he gave it to his son Peter Heming Bomford b 1941. Contributions have been made by many members of the family.
The tree has been available in several forms. As a diagram, it occupies several sheets of paper, totalling about three metres wide by 0.8 metres high. Some seventy copies were circulated in this form in the 1970s. More recently, Peter Bomford has put the tree into an electronic database, as a GED file (right click on the link and select Save Target As to save it to your computer. It will not open properly using an internet browser, but it can be read (sort of) with a text editor and can be opened properly with software such as FamilyTreeMaker, or FamilyTreeMaker starter edition, a free 16MB download). The version for the internet below has been derived from that database, with additional information from Kim Bomford . An extract from an early typed and handwritten tree is attached.
Four digit 'I' numbers in this tree correspond with the electronic number given to each individual in the GED database file, but because this is a combined tree, the information in the database will not always match, not all names in this version of the tree are in the database, and vice versa. There is also a concise version of this tree, which had the genealogical information but omits the historical detail.
A note on spelling. Spelling of names has generally followed that in Peter's database, though alternatives are occasionally given where they have been used in other versions of the family tree. To take one example, I0007 Mary Hiron has also been recorded as Maria Hyerne. There is a local family called Hirons, pronounced in the area 'Iyerns'. At this stage it is hard to tell which was the 'correct' spelling at the time. The name Heming is common in the tree, but is sometimes spelt with one m and sometimes with two. Peter Heming Bomford says, 'All the people I know who hold that name spell it with one m so I suggest using that. However, the original Hemming family used two ms. The single m version probably arose because of a convention by which a double letter used to be written as a single with a horizontal dash above.'
Corrections, updates, more details and additions to the tree are most welcome and should preferably be provided by email. It would be useful if contributors could provide some information as to the authority of the source, for the record. Links to other family trees, particularly those of the female lines that lost the Bomford name, and to family websites or other relevant information on the internet would be most welcome. More specific dates of birth, place of living, occupations etc would also be welcome, but we would like an assurance that living people have given consent to having more specific information about themselves published on this site. As a rule, we will not put direct contact information onto this website, but are happy to include links to personal websites.
For maps of the area, you might go to Mulitmap.com and search for a map of Evesham at around 1:200,000 scale.
The name has been spelt in different ways, Bamford, Bomford; Bumford. This was down to the scribe who would have written the names down at the time.
I0001 Thomas Bomford, b c1580, lived in Coughton, Warwickshire
He was a tenant farmer near Arrow, Warwick. He had two sons that we know of.
1a I0002 Thomas Bomford, of Arrow, b 1612, of whom below.
2a I0003 Laurence Bomford, b 1617, d 1720 at County Meath, m 1650 I0006 Eleanor Chevenix (or Chenevix), b 1633, d 1722. Laurence went to Ireland and started the Irish branch of the family.
Thomas and Laurence both fought for Oliver Cromwell at the battle of Worcester in 1651. Tradition has it that Oliver Cromwell called in at the farm house where the Bomfords lived on his way to Worcester on 22 August 1651, and there was entertained. The legend continues that he tethered his horse and sat under a yew tree, were he read his Bible. He went into the house were he is said to have written a letter. The farmhouse still survives to today as two dwellings.
It is said that there were Bomfords living at Wyre or Wyre Piddle near Pershore. They were probably puritans and sympathetic with Parliament in the great struggle for Faith and Freedom in the 17th century.
The elder son, I0002 THOMAS BOMFORD of Arrow stayed in the area. Thomas was probably tenant farmer of the Earl of Coventry who lived at Croome Court.
Thomas married and had two sons.
1a I0004 John Bomford of Arrow, b 1655, d Arrow m 1675 I0007 Mary Hiron (or Maria Hyerne), b 1645 and had issue. A special licence from the Bishop of Worcester was necessary for them to be married, but it is not known why. Perhaps John was 20, or perhaps banns hadn't been read.

The younger son, I0005 Thomas Bomford, of Wyre, b 1659, d 1727 at Wyre m I0013 Catherine, and had issue. All of Thomas' descendants came from a search of the IGI (the International Genealogical Index, made available by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the internet at http://www.familysearch.org), plus a bit of guesswork as to marriages.

2a I0015 Thomas Bomford b 1693 at Wyre, d Wyre, buried at Pershore, of whom below.
The younger son, I0015 Thomas Bomford, b 1693 at Wyre, d Wyre, buried at Pershore, m (m040331) 24 May 1724 at Throckmorton I0017 Elizabeth Heming, b Atch Lench, d Wyre buried at Pershore. They had seven children. The house where Thomas lived in Wyre has now disappeared. He and Elizabeth were buried at Pershore Baptist Chapel, but the grave is lost. Early chapel records no longer exist. He might have been born about 1702. There is an IGI entry for the marriage of Thomas Bomford and Elizabeth Heming of Atch Lench on 24 May 1724, at Throckmorton. Elizabeth's parents had 'The Firs' farm at Atch Lench. As the only child, the farm passed to her and eventually to her son Heming. 'Mrs Heming' is recorded as having made a contribution to the funds of the Pershore Baptist Chapel in 1725. This is the earliest recorded instance of a family member making a financial contribution to the Baptist cause. She was probably Elizabeth's mother, widow of John Heming (d 1713), copyholder of the manor of Atch Lench, who lived at 'The Firs'. Elizabeth inherited the copyhold, which passed to her son Heming. Lords of the manor were the Dean and Chapter of Westminster Abbey.

(A Thomas Bomford m a Mary Stone 14 Jun 1763 at Pirton (m046131) which fits with the birth of daughter Mary in c1764; Mary Wagstaff b 1748 would have been 15 in 1763 and c16 in c1764 when daughter Mary was born). 5b I1355 Hannah, b c1773. Hannah is known from the probate record, which includes 'To my Daughter Hannah I Give the sum of two hundred pounds 100£ part of which is a legacy given to her by late Husband Will'. It is not clear whether the 'late husband' is Hannah's mother Mary's late husband (Thomas), or whether 'Will' is the name of Hannah's late husband (I1356 William), or if 'Will' is just an artifact of poor transcription in the Probate office.
6b I0025 William Bomford, b 14 Jun 1776 at Wyre, d 17 Nov 1835 buried at Fladbury, m (m040191) 1 Sep 1801 at Elmley Castle (Fladbury?) I0983 Eleanor Summers, b 8 Jun 1776, d 4 Mar 1864 at Wyre buried at Fladbury, and had children.

An Edith Bomford of Malvern is recorded separately in probate as dying as a widow on 8 Jun 1935: probate was granted to Sydney Evans. No children. 1e I0435 Margaret Bomford, b 15 Apr 1867 at Atch Lench d 20 Oct 1967 at Evesham buried at Atch Lench. She was educated at the Court House school in Atch Lench, then trained as a teacher at Cambridge and worked at various schools in Scotland including finally 24 years at St George's School, Edinburgh. Retired in 1918 and lived the rest of her life in Atch Lench. Competent water colourist; several views of Atch Lench, plus Scottish scenes. Cared for her father in the Manor House; moved to The Manse about 1946 with sister Frances. Together they looked after the chapel and graveyard (Margaret until she was over 90), played the harmonium, taught the Sunday School. In her will, she left the Manse to the Baptist Church for the care of the graveyard. The proceeds of its sale went towards the construction of the Church Hall. She lived to be 100, though blind for the final few years. 45 of her former pupils sent her greetings on her birthday, which was spent at Avonside Hospital, Evesham, where she spent the last two years of her life. A Judy Garland record was played for her on 'Housewifes Choice' at the request of a fellow-patient.

4e I0438 Frances Emily Bomford, b 6 Nov 1873 at Atch Lench, d 27 Mar 1959 at Atch Lench buried at Atch Lench. Spent her whole life in the Atch Lench area, first at the Manor House and then, from 1946, at the Manse with older sister Margaret. She has left some not bad water colours and poems, but was overshadowed by Margaret in this respect. A serious student of local history, she published a series of articles in the local parish magazine and allegedly deposited a more detailed manuscript in the Worcs county archive. She also edited two booklets of the memoirs of her father George Frederick under the title 'Other days Other Ways', a history of the local Baptist Church and a booklet of selected letters of a Hemming cousin (Alcester) to her brother. In the late 1920s and early thirties she put together the foundation of this family tree, visiting graveyards, checking archives and speaking to relatives. Much of the travelling that this involved was by bicycle. In about 1936 she handed her manuscript (containing about 400 names) to her nephew I0449 Chris Bomford, telling him that it was now up to him to continue the work. He did so, expanding the list to over 700 names, adding a section on the Bomfords of County Meath and re-drawing it in a most attractive and comprehensible form. He supplied copies (originally duplicated by Bomford and Evershed) to Bomfords all over the world. In 2001, his 90th year, he handed over the care of the Family Tree to me, his son Peter. She used to take me for walks, often to Church Lench across the fields and over the brook. I was sometimes allowed to carry the walking stick with the woodpecker's head handle.

Ruth followed a career in teaching maths and retired as deputy head of a school in Nantwich in 1971. She returned to look after her father in Thorn Lodge and was then a mainstay of the Atch Lench Baptist Chapel until it closed in September 2000. Has researched Jackson, Bomford and Comely history.

In addition to the grange farm he owned a farm at Aldington and was tenant of the Atch Lench farm. At some time he had visited the Argentine and I was always interested in the plaited leather lasso that hung over a doorway as a souvenir of this visit. He also had a player piano which no longer worked in my memory. No children, but Annette's niece Lilian Morrow came to live with them and stayed on to care for Fred in his old age.
