Welcome to the new season

[Image: David Byers]Life begins at 40. It’s a time to look back, celebrate, reassess and look forward. And of course the life in question here is the Ulster Orchestra’s.

For this 40th anniversary season we’re celebrating with a host of great works, performing them with some of the conductors and soloists who have worked so successfully with the Orchestra in years gone by. There are other anniversaries too - Shostakovich at 100, Elgar at 150, Arts Council of Northern Ireland support at 40, BBC and Belfast City Council relationships at 25. Take some time and read through what’s on offer.

Nothing should stand still. Just as Seamus Heaney creates new poetry, often with references to the past (“retrieving the past”, someone recently described it) so the Orchestra must refresh, challenge and question for a new generation. Hence the great new appointment of Brian Irvine as the Orchestra’s Associate Composer - a real investment in the future. Look out for news later this year of a major education project with Brian in the springtime. And watch that same space for the announcement of a new Principal Conductor.

It’s not going to be a straightforward year. In April 2007, the Ulster Hall will close for 18 months for the final stage of its refurbishment and we’ll be decamping to the Whitla Hall as and when necessary. It’s really important to us - in fact it’s crucial - that we retain your loyalty over that period.

We’ve changed some terminology in this brochure to make things clearer, particularly for anyone coming to concerts for the first time. Those formerly known as Subscribers we are now calling Season Ticket Holders.

Your loyalty has not been diminished in any way! We continue to offer superb discounts for buying our Season Tickets. Book early and book often! Please pass this Brochure on to friends and encourage them to experience for themselves the sound of the Ulster Orchestra. Live music-making truly adds something very special to listening.

I hope you will find much here to entertain and entrance. Thank you for all your support and a particular word of thanks for their loyal support to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (including its National Lottery fund), the BBC and Belfast City Council.
