Databases and research

Australian Wetlands Database

The Australian Wetlands Database combines data of Australia's Ramsar sites, wetlands of international importance listed under the Convention on Wetlands, and our nationally important wetlands, which are listed in A Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia.

Wetlands are recognised as internationally or nationally important by an assessment of the significance of their character and values, and whether they meet an agreed set of criteria. The Ramsar Convention and the Directory each have their own set of criteria.

Ramsar sites are by definition also nationally important wetlands and have two entries in the database.
