The theme of the 2007 Ohio Junior Classical League Convention “Una mens potior est centum militibus” conveys an important message: thought can be more powerful than violence. All too often in today’s world, violence and destruction occur first, and it is up to us to take action to repair the damage.

Mercy Corps is a world-wide organization dedicated to helping communities rebuild from destruction wrought by war, upheaval and natural disasters. Their mission statement: “Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.” Since 1979, they have provided over $1 billion in aid to people in 82 countries passing over 90% of donations directly to the communities they serve.

This year, the OJCL will dedicate our convention charity funds to this commendable organization in an effort to put our minds and efforts to work restoring peace to lives around the world. If “una mens potior est centum militibus”, imagine what we can accomplish with 2,344, so join the cause and give generously.
