Valentine's Day with Xbox

Yes, yes, Xbox Overload.

But, this release about Valentine's Day related events/things to do via the 360 and XBL just landed in my lap and it's making me chuckle.

For the Love of Lost Planet

Stuck at home without a date? Or maybe your new love is fighting large scary insects on a frozen planet? Join the pre-Valentine party on Saturday, February 10 and jump in front of the TV for a "Lost Planet" All-Nighter. Xbox Live is hosting Capcom's 'Lost Planet: Extreme Condition" for all the insomniacs to join together pre-Valentine’s Day to kick some Akrid a#% in the most lovingly way. Capcom is also giving away free swag to random gamers who write about their All-Nighter gaming experience in their recaps, explaining their favorite moments or what they loved about the session. Then the Terrorists Have Won...

The Aqua Teen Hunger Forcer terror story broke last week, so this isn't exactly rolling out while the presses are hot ... but I've been thinking, and sometimes that takes a while.

If we can't cope with the placement of lite-brite©-esque renditions of cartoon characters — if we mistake anything innocuous for a bomb — then I think it can be said that "the terrorists have won" ... to use a phrase that's been oft-bandied since 9/11.

Hip hop hooray

The "Def Jam: Icon" demo is going up on the Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow. That's assuming you can tear yourself away from the "Crackdown" demo, of course.

What can you expect to see?

"The demo showcases the gas station level and two hip-hop celebrity fighters, Big Boi and T.I. The game also features both hip-hop artists’ hit songs, Kryptonite (Purple Ribbon All-Stars Featuring Big Boi) and Top Back (T.I.)"

Why you should play more Xbox Live

As if you needed an excuse for spending more time on XBL...but if you do, Microsoft's got one for you.

They've just announced the Old Spice Experience Challenge, wherein you've got 60 days (from February 12 to April 12) to increase your gamerscore by 1,500 points in order to win stuff. So sign up. Don't let your points go to, um, waste.

Factoid: Since November 2005, more than 200 million achievements have been unlocked. Wowsa.

Details after the jump

Ozzfest is free!

All you metalheads out there: Sharon Osbourne just announced that Ozzfest 2007 is going to be t-o-t-a-l-l-y free this summer. (She didn't say whether or not there would be more price gouging than usual at the concession stands though.) If this seems too good to be true, it kind of is. Instead of being able to pick up tickets via Ticketmaster, you'll be directed towards special sponsor sites to pick 'em up. Still, free tickets so you can't really complain. Too much.

OK, strictly speaking, neither this post nor Ozzfest are about video games, but it can be linked back to games. Here's how: Avenged Sevenfold and Dragonforce played Ozzfest last year. Avenged Sevenfold's "Beast and the Harlot" is one of Guitar Hero II's face-melter songs. Meanwhile, Dragonforce had a metalicious GHII showdown with's game editors. See? Full circle.

Music to your ears

Music and video games, these are two of my favorite things. Combined, they are unstoppable! Sinister Laugh.

While I'm not exactly an indie pop/rock fan (at all), I can appreciate it (if necessary), especially when it comes to a band that's doing something vaguely interesting. And no, losing weight to fit into ironic vintage sweaters or deejaying hipster parties does not count.

That being said, New York indie-pop band Grey Does Matter would fall under the (actually) interesting category. They're going all 8-bit on Feb. 8, ditching their amps in favor of a GameBoy. What does this mean? They're using the handheld console's on board synthesizer to make sweet, sweet music. It may not be as technologically awesome as what the 8bitpeoples are doing, but it's different. And different is cool.

Here's a link to a Grey Does Matter song, run through the GameBoy.

Grey Does Matter and GameBoy friend play at 11 p.m., at the Annex (152 Orchard St., [212] 673-3410) on Feb. 8

If you look down the right hand corner - next to the itty bitty red type - you can see the GameBoy in action. Or...just sitting there.

Today, in Konami world

Konami announced a great big ol' list of games to expect this year. The most exciting one (potentially) is "Hellboy," which'll be released for the Xbox 360, PSP and (dun dun dun) the PS3. The game'll be based on the Dark Horse Comics series and movie, which seems kind of late given the fact that the movie came out in 2004. Apparently, you'll be able to unleash the Right Hand of Doom in "visceral melee combat" while battling to thwart a "diabolical" Nazi plot. The PSP version will have some sort of "original visual style" (stick figures?) and new game play elements built around episodic play sessions. Oh frabjous day, calloo, callay! Ron Perlman's back doing the voice for Hellboy.

No release month or even season set yet, though.
