Gore Screaming Show

image Review
image After years of running away, Kyouji is forced to confront his past. As the wheels of destiny slowly turn, the key players from a terrible mistake have unknowingly gathered together to find punishment or resolution while remaining dangerously ignorant to the truth. When they first stared into the Abyss, the Abyss merely blinked back. Now as they gaze upon it again, its darkness seeks to rend them apart limb from limb and damn their souls for eternity.

Gore Screaming Show is an adult oriented horror game published by Black Cyc in early 2006. The title has an indirect connection to MinDeaD BlooD. This article, for the sake of maintaining a respectable environment, will not display adult material.

Featured in the same setting as MinDeaD BlooD, although with far less occurrences of combat, Gore Screaming Show is a gruesomely graphic title. Going beyond the level of human violation found in its predecessor, the visual novel presents violent sex that, more often than not, results in the dismemberment and death of the raped prisoner. These events are so prevalent and disturbing, the player is given the option of further censoring the game to keep the most graphic illustrations hidden. Clearly, it is not for the faint of heart or conservative individuals.

That said, Gore Screaming Show is another title from Black Cyc that will certainly appeal to those who found MinDeaD BlooD entertaining. While it features a smaller cast, the fewer personalities allows incredibly massive character development, providing abundant surprising plot twists that lead to a stunning conclusion in the “true” ending. Furthermore, vicious as the more depraved sex events may be, there is an underlying purpose to them: a handful could even be argued as justified from a plotline prospective. While there are moments of heroic action in the plot, the story primarily employs allusions and foreshadowing as its primary tools: as such, there are times when Gore Screaming Show seems more suited within the mystery genre, rather than horror. It’s definitely a welcomed bonus.

From a visual and audio standpoint, Gore Screaming Show is marvelous. Just like its precursor, the gothic music ranks equally with anything found in titles such as Castlevania and Devil May Cry: the opening (Distorted Pain) and closing songs are simply beyond fantastic - perhaps the best JPOP tunes from a Black Cyc title thus far. The artwork is incredibly detailed and thoroughly planned, with the girls regularly changing their wardrobe from day to day like a real person would. Sex scenes are pure masterpieces, going beyond the three or four illustration standard; many reach a dozen in their entirety. As such, they are quite extensive and entertaining.

Sadly, there still remains a small negative in Gore Screaming Show: the voice acting. Overall its outstanding, however during the more violent events, the women seem incapable of acting out the scenes being played with enough… ahem… screaming. Granted, it would be idiotic to think these individuals would stress or endanger their professional career by damaging vocal cords to achieve a realistic feat, but it does somewhat lessen the moment. Nonetheless, this is a very minor gripe to a wonderful title.

For fans of the MinDeaD BlooD series, there is absolutely no reason to pass a chance at Gore Screaming Show. While the characters aren’t inclined towards resolving problems through combat like the former, it’s like another step in evolution, allowing the player to encounter more of this particularly dark and morbid setting. Ironically, individuals who’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing the preceding title need not fear missing anything, for Gore Screaming Show is an entirely independent title of its own, require no knowledge of events outside it.

Yuka

Blood Type: Unknown
Birthdate:Unknown
Measurements: 75 - 56 - 78

A mysterious girl with the face of an angel and the soul of a demon, Yuka seems to have an unearthly attachment to Kyouji. All evidence points that she has no home or history, suddenly appearing and vanishing as it suits her unknowable whims. Yuka is clearly insane, but on a subtle level.

Gore Screaming Show

Blood Type: Indeterminable
Birthdate: Indeterminable
-

Arguably the protector of Yuka, Gore is a terrifying amalgamation of cat, clown, devil, and machine. His insanity is only matched by his sarcastic wit and insults; of which there seems to be no end of. Possessing a sadistic sense of humor, he openly enjoys watching others in pain and suffering.

image Personal Rating
image Story: While things seem a bit cliché; in the beginning, the entire arc makes a fantastic 180 degree turn after the first thirty minutes. From that point on, it becomes a rollercoaster of mysteries and lies that keep the player utterly enslaved. As you learn more and more of the past, obvious truths become self evident, and you begin to question how hidden plot elements revealed earlier slipped so easily. 9 of 10

image Characters: Despite the fact he’s a sadistic murderer with one of the weirdest voices I’ve ever heard, Gore is simply hilarious. He practically steals the entire show. Nonetheless, the other leading characters are just as memorable. There’s immense interaction between everyone, creating a realistic sense of friendship: one of the core themes in the plot. 9 of 10

image Graphics: This title lives up to its… title. It has some of the bloodiest illustrations I’ve ever seen in a visual novel: most of them being in the sex events. Most individuals would certainly feel they’re too disturbing, but that’s what the three level censorship option is for. 8 of 10

image Sound: Blessed with the same composer from MinDeaD BlooD, the soundtrack is once again a beautiful work. This time a much softer approach was utilized: although its no less gothic. In fact, it makes things seem ever haunting; ever creepy. Adding icing to the cake: except for the player’s character, everyone has voice actors. 9 of 10

image Overall: Outstanding. This is another kick ass gothic story from Black Cyc. While the gore might turn a large number away, its one of the best examples of a “violent” visual novel available. After only a few days of playing, I added this title to my top five list; something that doesn’t happen often. Definitely a collection keeper. 8.75 of 10
