Fox has done us a great service with the release of Laura on DVD as part of its Fox Film Noir line. Not only do we get a great movie; we also get a very nice selection of extras.

The movie is provided in its original non-widescreen format (1.33:1 aspect ratio), with sound in English language Dolby stereo, along with English and Spanish tracks in mono. Subtitles are provided in the same two languages.

There are two very good full-length audio commentaries provided on the DVD. One is by film historian Rudy Behlmer, who typically has extensive notes that he presents throughout the commentary, rarely being silent. This is a solid commentary, although note quite as interesting as the second commentary, by film academic Jeanine Basinger and composer David Raksin. Although their comments were recorded separately, they are edited together well, making for a thorough, enjoyable presentation by the two – Basinger does most of the talking.

The DVD also includes two episodes of the excellent A & E television series Biography, one on Gene Tierney and the other on Vincent Price. They run about 44-minutes each and are most informative.

This excellent DVD also includes a rare extra for a movie of this era – a deleted scene. This is great fun, and is enhanced by optional commentary by Behlmer. The last extra on the disc is the move trailer.
