CLAIMS Anna Nicole Smith used her late billionaire oil tycoon husband's sperm to father her tiny daughter have been branded a hoax.

As the mystery continued over the paternity of the dead celebrity's five-month-old infant, the New York Daily News yesterday reported it had seen an unpublished manuscript written by her half-sister, Donna Hogan.

The tabloid claims Ms Hogan wrote that Smith froze J. Howard Marshall's sperm to use as a "trump card" in her 11-year battle to gain a large slice of his $US1.6 billion estate.

The court action is still unresolved. In 1994, Smith, then 26, married the 89-year-old wheelchair-bound billionaire. He died the following year.

Fox News reported that the publisher of Hogan's book on her sister, titled Train Wreck, had described the newspaper's claims as a hoax. Three men have claimed paternity of the former Playboy Playmate's daughter, Dannielynn.

They include former lover Larry Birkhead, partner Howard K. Stern, and actress Zsa Zsa Gabor's eighth husband, Prince Frederick von Anhalt.

Smith's estranged mother, Vergie Arthur, has flown to the Bahamas to see Dannielynn for the first time. The child is believed to still be on the island with Smith's friends.

A travelling companion of Mrs Arthur, David Leigh, said Smith's mother was worried about Dannielynn and wanted her to be with her rightful father - and that was not Mr Stern.

"Her aim is not to get custody of the child. Her aim is to make sure the child is safe," Mr Leigh said.

Smith, who was born as Vickie Lynn Hogan in Texas, collapsed and died on Thursday afternoon in Hollywood, Florida. Police have ruled out a crime or illegal drugs.Broward County medical examiner Joshua Perper said her death was either caused by an overdose of prescription medication, natural causes, or a combination of both. He said the exact cause would not be known until tests were completed.
