Cruz Control 2
I managed to work references to two "earlier, funnier'' Woody Allen movies into my reviews of "Because I Said So'' and "Puccini for Beginners' today, but the Woodman's more recent work (yes, including "Match Point'') has left me pretty cold.
Based on the terrible performances he's gotten from Scarlett Johanssen in "Match Point'' and "Scoop,'' it was surprising to learn that newly-minted Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz has signed on for the Woodman's latest, which will be filmed this summer in Barcelona according to a scoop by Fox News Channel's intrepid Roger Friedman, who cornered Woody at an AmFar benefit the other night.Cruz, as we noted earlier this week, dodged a bullet when Fox elected to ship "Bandidas,'' a dreadful English-language comedy she made a couple of years ago with Salma Hayek, directly to home video. Of course, she made "Volver'' in Spanish after several years of struggling through American flicks.
Reviewers for Jake Paltrow's "The Good Night,'' which premiered at Sundance, said Cruz was effectively precisely because she wasn't burdened with much dialogue. Sort of like Madonna, who has always had trouble with her line readings and never equalled the impression she made with her essentially nonspeaking role in "Desperately Seeking Season.''
