Milestones:
Founded in 1870 as a weekly, the Citizen became a daily in 1885. Association with writers like Thomas Wolfe or O. Henry, both buried in Asheville, or F. Scott Fitzgerald, a familiar visitor, made for colorful newsroom stories in earlier days. In 1986, $12 million was invested in offset printing presses and a new 44,000 square-foot production building in nearby Enka, with composed pages transmitted electronically from the downtown Asheville building 9 miles away. And in April 1997, the Citizen-Times launched its Web site, Carolina Mountains, becoming the first daily newspaper in Western North Carolina to have a presence on the Internet.

The Citizen-Times serves an area that is rural and mountainous, with a steady influx of people from metro markets. As the hub of the WNC market, its independent carriers travel more than 3 million miles annually, sometimes on treacherous terrain, to deliver news and advertising messages throughout the region.

About Asheville:

Founded 201 years ago, Asheville is located in Buncombe County and is the largest city in Western North Carolina. Serving as the unofficial "capital" of the region, Asheville was recently selected as an All-America City for its strength of community spirit and the commitment of its business, civic and non-profit leaders.

Asheville’s economy is supported by four major factions: manufacturing, government, health care and tourism. An area rich in history and culture, there’s much to see, from arts and crafts to antiques, theaters, museums, art galleries, historic attractions and unique shops.
