Lynn P. Burleson

Lynn Burleson is a native of Albemarle, North Carolina. He was admitted to practice in North Carolina in 1980, after receiving his bachelors degree in 1970 and his Master of Public Administration degree in 1974 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his J.D. degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1980.  Before joining Tharrington Smith, Mr. Burleson served as a district court judge and was a partner in the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton.  He has served as an adjunct professor of law for the Wake Forest University School of Law and High Point University.

Mr. Burleson practices exclusively in the field of family law. He is a North Carolina State Bar certified specialist in Family Law and is past president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  He is past chair of the Arbitration Committee and sits on the Board of Governors as a chapter delegate of the national American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  He frequently serves as a faculty member of the national AAML Matrimonial Law Arbitration Institute.  He is listed in the family law section of Best  Lawyers in America and was listed among the 2004 "Legal  Elite" by Business North Carolina.  He was also listed as one of the top 100 "SuperLawyers" in the 2006  and 2007 editions of Charlotte and Law and Politics magazines.  He has served as chair of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and has served on the Board of Governors of the Association.  In 1990, Mr. Burleson was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Bar Association for his service to the Family Law Section.  Mr. Burleson has served as president of  both the Twenty-First Judicial District and the Forsyth County Bar Associations.

Mr. Burleson is a frequent speaker at law schools and at continuing legal education programs and has presented manuscripts on a wide range of topics including absolute divorce, divorce from bed and board, alimony, child support, Rule 11 sanctions, qualified domestic relations orders, employee  benefits, discovery of corporate records by minority shareholders, ethics, counsel fees, mediation, neutral evaluation, use of referees, classification and distribution of marital assets, marital property valuation, family law contracts, breach of confidential relationships, and arbitration.

Mr. Burleson is certified as an arbitrator by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and as family financial mediator by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
