CLERGY'S CORNER

Monsignor Michael J. Eivers

Monsignor Michael Eivers was born in Ireland 1928, a farmer's son, born in the lush meadowlands of Longford where there are forty shades of green. He has one brother, Tony, (deceased) and one sister, Kathleen, a member of St. Edward's. He graduated high school from St. Mel's College and entered the seminary at Holy Ghost Missionary College, Dublin. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy at the University College Dublin and received his license in Theology in 1955.Father Eivers was appointed to the missions in Nigeria, West Africa where he ministered for eleven years. When his missionary work was interrupted by deportation in a civil war, he accepted ministry in the U.S.A. serving in several parishes in Miami before being appointed Pastor of St. Boniface in 1973, where he remained for twenty-one years.

Before he retired, Archbishop McCarthy, appointed Father Michael as founding pastor of St. Edwards in January 1995 where he takes his motto: "Not By Might Not By Power But By My Spirit, Says The Lord"

On January 22, 2000, during the dedication mass of Saint Edward's Parish Center by Archbishop McCarthy and Archbishop Favalora, Father Michael Eivers was named Monsignor by order of The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. The Monsignor looks forward to many more years of service to the church community.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rev. Fr. Oscar Sarmiento
Parochial Vicar

Fr. Oscar was born in Cuba and left the island in 1959 traveling to:
Republic of Panama - finished high school in Colegio Javier.
Then to Miami an Puerto Rico.
1965 moved to New York City.
Graduated from Cooper Union (Fine Arts Degree)
Returned to Tallahassee at which time God's calling was very clear and he entered St Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD and finished at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and Florida State University - Tallahassee.
Nov. 27, 1982 - Ordained at Cathedral of St. Thomas More. Tallahassee, FL.
1983 - Parochial Vicar - Holy Name of Jesus - Niceville, FL.
1985 - Parochial Vicar - Cathedral of St. Thomas More assigned to Youth Minister, Campus Ministry at FSU.
1988 - Pastor - Our Lady of the Rosary, Bayou, FL.
1991 - Moved to Miami, FL.
1991 - Parochial Vicar - San Isidro, Pompano Beach (3 yrs).
1994 - St John The Apostle, Hialeah
1995 - Parochial Vicar - St Joseph, Miami Beach (7yrs).
2003 - Parochial Vicar - St. Edward, Pembroke Pines.

Fr. Oscar is an avid traveler and would be delighted to share the many wonderful experiences he had throughout the world.  Check him out on scuba diving and water skiing!

Born in Brooklyn, NY

Served in U.S. Navy and retired as Metro Dade Police Major

Ordained to Deaconate, St. Vincent De Paul Seminary

Assigned to St. Edward Parish in 1994
