Jim Robb, a leading member of Friday Folk, died in hospital on Sunday 25th June 2006 after falling ill at his home. Jim was well known throughout the dance community and travelled widely in Britain and America to attend dances and festivals.
Jim enjoyed many kinds of dancing, but his favourite was the American contra. After taking early retirement, Jim devoted his considerable energy to promoting contra dancing, and he invited many leading American bands and callers to visit the UK.
Cis Hinkle, a caller from Atlanta, Georgia, says "I owe so much to Jim for his tireless efforts to bring me and other American callers and bands to the attention of dancers in the UK. His organisational skills were amazing, arranging dances all over the UK and getting us to each one on time. I always enjoyed wonderful hospitality in Welwyn from Jim and his partner, Ann, and will miss him greatly."
Jim kept on dancing right to the end of his life, despite a worsening heart condition. He had just completed a gruelling 2,000 mile tour of the UK with a popular US band and then enjoyed a relaxing weekend, dancing with Ann at the Lichfield Folk Festival.
He will be sadly missed by his family and his friends around the world.
