Tuesday 19th March, 2002:
Lots of work has been continuing in NAB in general and this site in particular, as you'll know if you visit the "News Update Channel" over at the Nerf Arena Forums!  We have added quite a few new screenshot & review pages; let's start with the least exciting ones, maps that Tmon & Tux have on their downloads pages that had somehow not come my way.  PlaygroundThe Map and
DH Lighted No Guns Beta 1
are all anonymous efforts, while Stadium is a preliminary version of Tracer's Stadium '01, and Kosov Remix seems to be an unfinished project by Sharpknux.
WolfPack Training Beta is a new, improved version of G.Wynn's first map-making attempt, which was WolfPack Training Map - the major improvement is that it now has a proper skybox, though it has been improved in other ways too.  His second map is Cavern, and his third is
Barracuda Complex
...check them out, you won't regret it.
BlobBlob and SpUtNiK's Beachhead Assault is really a "beta" at the moment, but it is a very interesting one; BlobBlob intends to do some more work on it, including texture changes, less weapons, more health, and a skybox... Check out the helicopter ride, lol...
"Triple Strike",the NAB serial by Icephoen-X, has now been completed - read the whole story on this page, below his earlier "The Problem With NerfEd", okay?
Long-time nabber Tweety has been playing recently, and running a server; he is also working on a map called Tweety's Big Tree - he sent us a screenshot!  He has gone off to Mexico for a month now, though. Justin has been in touch to say that, after being busy with his Gamecube, he has now given up NAB for Lent - but should be back with us after that, which is good news.  Flame is working on a number of maps, including an "Assault" version of Overlord Remix, plus
Arxona
and Archipel.  His map Brotherhood of Fire is out, on the Star Wars Clan site - it's a nice one!
B-Ball's site is down at the moment; Tripod deleted the account, though he does have a back-up of it on a CD.  He has also had a computer problem, so hasn't been around as much as usual lately.  Ace's site, NAB Mod Squad, is worth your urgent attention, meanwhile - head to his Downloads page especially, and grab his finished "instagib" mod, now called Laser Blast, and Icedude's King of the Hill mod.  And if you download Ace's "Nerf PDA Menu Mod" as well, the two game-types get added to the drop-down menu you use when making a server, along with pointblast, ballblast, speedblast, and the team versions.  Ace describes the mods nicely - let me just say that they are small downloads, and a lot of extra fun.  Highly recommended!  Tiggy seems to have stopped work on the CTF mod, but he has passed the code on to Curt and Ace. Curt is working on a map called Assault Barracks - check out the NAB'n'UT site for some screenshots of models he has made for it.  As with Flame's project, the idea is to try to give a taste of the UT "Assault" game type...The "Previews" section also has some interesting shots of SLAM's Nerf Hall work-in-progress.
On the NAB Forum, SLAM reports on a "Huge Co-Op Project" he is working on with Curt and Ace - the title Base Warfare has been mentioned. Chapter Five of SLAM's epic "Future Nerf" saga is out on his site, with Chapter Six not far behind. Pimp has resumed work on an old project of his, Dance Club.  On his site, BoomSlang reports that he is working on maps for "Boom's Gigantic Map-Pack", with "a lot of originals and one full remix" plus a reworked map from UT - not a remix!  Darth Animal seems to have been quiet recently, but assures me he has started work on Antimatter Remix - that's a very large UT "CTF" map, and one that I rather like in Unreal Tournament, so I hope that the remixing work goes well.  And me?  Well, I've been mainly struggling to get my new computer set up.  Connecting to the internet with it has been the big problem - today has been its best-behaved day ever, so there's hope yet.  It certainly loads and plays NAB and UT more quickly than the old computer, but then it is supposed to be four times as powerful.  The graphics card doesn't seem too happy with some NAB and UT texture effects, which is a worry - Quake III Arena seems to work beautifully, though!   Not wanting to import some of the old machine's faults, I've been downloading the NAB maps onto the new computer, mainly from Tmon & Tux's site - but some I've been able to download from my own site, which is nice.  Anyway, see you on NAB soon!

Thursday February 21st, 2002:
The "News Update Channel" now has its own forum in the NAB Forum array, so our link to the latest news should be easier to use.  Use the whole forum, of course - the more people post, the more interesting it is for everyone.  And check out the "use emoticons" link when you post, and see all the cool smilies we now have!
G.Wynn's first map, WolfPack Training Map, has its review'n'screenshot page here - download it there too!  His second map, Cavern, is just about ready too - check it out here!  Icephoen-X has sent in the first two chapters of a new NAB story, "Triple Strike", which we've put on the same page as his earlier "The Problem With NerfEd" tale - check it out here!   The concluding part should be with us within the week.  Curt has had a second "Picture of the Day" plugging the NAB'n'UT site on Planet Unreal - you can still find it in their archives here.   A new mapper has joined the NAB'n'UT team - Lofty, who seems to be a UT rather than NAB mapmaker, at least so far.
I ran into Tweety recently, after a gap of many many months - he is working on a new map, called Tweety's Big Tree, and kindly sent me a screenshot: here!  Yes, that sure is a tree, and it's big, too!  Flame has finished a very good-looking map, which he calls Brotherhood of Fire - look here, okay?
I've added the list of maps that the Thunder Clan Dedicated Server runs through - over on the right, right?  Generally a fine selection, though I don't think I'm alone in always getting booted out when it starts TimeRift Remix!

Wednesday,February 13th, 2002:
Darth Animal's Mos Eisley Remix was released a while back (see our review and screenshot page here), though he and Flame have discussed the possibility of doing an "extreme" version too, with lots more weapons, megajumps, and maybe access to a fully-textured interior of the Millenium Falcon!  More recently, Darth has also been able to release 1on1 Lego Remix (our page is here), which looks a lot of fun.  Flame's own 1on1 Church Remix (see here) plays well, too, though it does need the ShaneChurch texture file, which is quite large.  Luckily, you can download the map either with or without that file, so check if you already have it in your textures folder!   Another map Darth has been working on is Antagonism Remix (our page for it is here), but it has a clipping problem in one corner...
Talking of clipping problems (where a part of a map vibrates and blurs and repeats itself off to infinity), SLAM has done a revised and improved version of his fine Canyon Outpost which suffers, in a small way in a hidden-away cave; the map generally is much improved, so if you've the older version, right-click it, choose "rename", and add "Beta" to the end, then grab the new one - our page is here!
We have added links to Sharpknux's new Void Online Forum - and also to his new mega-site, straight to the NAB part, here!  It's already got lots of the NAB maps, and should be adding those hard-to-find textures shortly!  And Boom has been updating his site a lot lately - check out his screenshots of The Little Big, a map he has been working on...
Saturday January 26th, 2002:
Curt reports that his and SLAM's "NAB'n'UT" site is now open - he will be uploading the finished "Dragon's End" map to it very soon, so check it out here!  Over on the NAB Gallery site, SLAM says that chapter 3 of the Future Nerf "Hostile Takeover" epic is out now, "and Chapter 4 won't be far behind, probably a couple more days."  He also tells me that "I am planning on starting a NAB History Book, which will track events from the beginning. I wasn't sure where I was going to get all the information, but I found out how much updating I really did in the old days. However, I would like everyone to send me a list of things they knew happened, and what dates, and so on so I can cross-reference."
Reaper has been in touch, and says "Hi!" to everyone.  "I'm also honored you guys have kept the Reaper Rating!"
Darth Animal is remixing a new "Star Wars" themed map - you can check out a screenshot for "Mos Eisley Remix" here!  He still needs to add some more weapons and pick-ups, some minor texturing bits - and ambient sounds, not to mention a ReadMe, he says!  It is a big map, so bring plenty of friends with you... but unlike some other maps in the new "Star Wars Map Pack" for Unreal Tournament, it seems fairly easy to learn the basic layout.  You can climb on a landspeeder - you can even admire the Millenium Falcon from outside, though as NAB player-characters are larger than UT ones, you can't actually get inside, which is a shame.  Still, it's a fun place to go adventuring...
Monday January 21st, 2002:
SLAM reworked one of his upcoming "Capture The Flag" maps for regular pointblast, and it's out now: check out our page for Dream Mansion here!  This version has some "clipping", but that doesn't effect gameplay.  Also out in time for Saturday's "Reunion" was FeEdiKo's excellent remix of Sun Tzu (appearing on server lists as "Fee's War Academy") - our page is here.  It looks wonderful!  FeEdiKo has two more map remixes in his "in tray": Viridian-TOURNEY, and also Grit-TOURNEY.  Icedude, meanwhile, has released an action-packed "tweak" of ballblast, which he calls "GravBall" - his "GravBall Starter Kit" includes, for mappers and remixers, a "GravBall Template" (here), plus a finished map, Barracuda GravBall - our page for that is here!
The "beta" of "Insta-Gib" for NAB works, but, at least for me, had no cross-hairs to aim with, no visible weapon or firing-effect, and no "blown away" animation if you did manage to shoot someone (they just vanished); Ace and Boom are no doubt hoping to get the finished final version out soon.  Boom has also been working on his site:  "I am almost done with the website. You will like it I guarantee" is the message!  Meanwhile, Curt reports "I've completely finished Dragon's End (sorta, I need to fix some clipping problems) and it should be out as soon as Ace finishes his weapons," so that sounds good. The "beta" version's screenshot is  here, remember?

Tuesday January 15th, 2002
Eek, almost a fortnight (as we call two weeks in Britain) since the last news report - as usual, my defence is that there hasn't been a lot going on.  We have put review 'n' screenshot pages up for a new pair of maps from SLAM, which is the main reason for this report:  Warped Bay (here) is a small, quick test map for a new texture set, linked to a new gameplay-style called "Whompage Arena" that Boom is working on; and Professional Arena (here) is a companion map for Amateur Arena, using the best bits, and its textures, to create a whole new arena, with lots of corridors and features.  The "yahoo slide" is there, you will be relieved to hear!
"Insta-Gib" is popular in Unreal Tournament; you are supplied with one gun, and unlimited ammo, and you don't need to worry about health as shots either kill you or they miss!  This is being introduced to NAB, and a "beta" version is out now, which BlobBlob has kindly sent me. But a "final version" should be ready soon, with the hyperstrike-style weapon newly skinned, and everything working well.  The only minor problems are that you have to launch it like a "mutator", by typing into the console, if you're the server starter; and unlike regular mutators, you can't join a server running it unless you have downloaded and installed the package.
Icedude reports that he's been working on SH-Neighborhood (his site has a screen-shot of it, looking interesting!), as well as helping Tracer with Charlotte; FeEdiKo has a screenshot of his new Sun Tzu map on his site (here - then click the map name), and it looks extremely atmospheric.  More next time - who knows, maybe some new "Capture the Flag" news soon!

Wednesday January 2nd, 2002: Happy New Year!
SLAM has announced the release of the first two chapters of "Future Nerf" - he has released 'em early  "Anticipating computer problems at home" shortly. "However, the Future Nerf Reader's Guide is still under construction. I anticipate that this will be done within the next two days and released", SLAM assures us.
I have updated the old review page for Icedude's Asteroid Bonus II arena (here), since he has released a completely new map using the old name!  I have updated my links for Icedude's site, so that they will now take you to his new Geocities one (here). You can download the new map from his Downloads page, along with a Christmas-themed UT map he has made.
NAB player, and CD member, jt487 got a Cybiko for Christmas - while it can't handle attachments, for ordinary e-mails the address is aaabpaa@cybiko.com.  Sharpknux has set up a chat channel for NAB players, it is #NerfArenaBlast - and the network is irc.dal.net - if you aren't set up for mirc, go to the CD-UT site and use the "Join our IRC Channel" link putting those bits, and your own nickname, in the appropriate boxes.
After Braveheart showed us around his Armagedon (beta 2) map, with its hidden corridors and other cool stuff, we were able to expand our review (here), and even increase its "RR" rating. It's a fun place to fight!
Boom has been having problems with his site - he had therefore not been able to upload his Christmas-themed map when he'd hoped to. However, he has been able to upload it now, and you can find our review'n'screenshot here, complete with a nice new "download now" button.  Curt reports "Ace and I are working on our pack for new weapons and maps. He's finishing them up, as I am hard at work with Dragon's End. They will both be featured in the same pack, hopefully a .umod. Then, probably later on, they will be released separately. As for NAB'n'UT, we've put it on hold and haven't done much work; SLAM has a good layout, but we seem to have no content, yet."
Tuesday December 25th, 2001: Christmas Day!
New maps? We've got a few.  Check out our review'n'screenshot pages for these beauties: "Anubis Remix" (here) by B-Ball; Kringle Remix (here) by Darth Animal; a remix of the Unreal map "Nyleve", Crash Site Beta (here) by Icedude, and (now that we do have a download button for it) (TT) Tycoon Bonus by BLades (here)!
In other news, SLAM announces that January 14th will be the release date for the first TWO chapters of "Future Nerf", with further chapters appearing every one or two weeks after that - and we must check out Boom's site to see if that new map of his is up yet, right...?  His site seemed a little empty when I just checked, which probably means things are being worked on, so check there now...
Icedude's Crash Site Beta is unfinished, with only a couple of weapons - he wants some suggestions about what else to add, so check it out.  It is also the first released map with the new "Tobio Trees" in it, which look fine.  B-Ball's Anubis Remix looks great, in Barracuda textures - but top of my list (and I checked it twice) has to be the slightly rushed remix (the UT version was only released yesterday!) by Darth Animal, the very seasonal Kringle Remix.  As I say in my review, it isn't perfect, but it ought to be very playable and looks great, so turn the heating down, wrap a scarf round your neck, and load it up!  (TT) Tycoon Bonus is a suitably snowy retexturing of the good old Orbital Bonus arena - with added "Target Tag" goodness of course...
So, enjoy yourselves, have a very Happy Christmas, and see you on NAB soon!
Saturday December 22nd, 2001:
Well, I would have updated before now - if there had been any new news to stun you with!  Things have, however, been very quiet.   Boom has a small update to say that he has lent his NAB disc to a friend, who seems to be enjoying playing - so look out for "Greasemonkey" online!  Tmon & Tux report that they've heard from Galen99 (JLG Leader), who is back from a stay in Egypt, and should be getting a new computer, and back with NAB, soon.  "Nobody owns JLG", he says!
Ace has a new site with a very cool looking front page (here) - unfortunately the pages for skins, mods, mutators etc are not linked in yet.  Ace has been seen online testing out some skins for a NAB version of the UT "Abbey Chase" model, so keep an eye out for them soon!
SLAM has updated the "Future Nerf" part of the NAB Gallery site, and more concept sketches and stuff are coming soon.  His map work lately has been confined to maps for the upcoming CTF mod that Tiggy should soon be releasing.
Darth Animal hasn't been doing much lately on the remixing front; he is adding some textures to a map called StormChaser that Justin has been working on, but it seems that there are very few new maps being released for Unreal Tournament at the moment, and those that have come out are either not right for NAB, or have had their brushes deleted, which makes remixing impossible... His Urban Terror Remix remains an excellent arena, if you haven't got it yet, try and grab it - Urban Uprising Remix, its companion map, is pretty darn good too.
Well, the Holiday Season is upon us - so, see you on-NAB, and have a great time over Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
Saturday December 8th, 2001:
Tiggy reports good progress on bringing CTF, "Capture The Flag", to NAB - after great difficulty trying to use the Unreal Tournament CTF code, he has instead changed to a CTF version used in the earlier Unreal instead!  "I think I'm finally on the home stretch", Tiggy says - read his report on the NAB Forum here...
Darth Animal's Urban Uprising Remix, a companion map to Urban Terror Remix, is now available on the Star Wars Clan site - or check out our review'n'screenshot page here on the way!  It uses the Plutonic Urban texture file, which is available from Tmon & Tux (or comes in the zip file with Urban Terror Remix), and looks very nice.  Since in UT it is a CTF map, maybe a further version of it will appear with Tiggy's CTF code included, in a few weeks...?
More recently, Darth has uploaded Vex Remix, his reworking of a brand-new UT map using the richrig textures (also available from Tmon & Tux, if you haven't acquired the file before) - our page for it is here.  It isn't big, but it looks a great place for a pointblast spree, and the Bots work well.  If you play as a tall character, like Ted or Troy or Wes, there is one corridor where the ceiling is too low, so be warned!
Dax has been doing a new version of one of B-Ball's maps, with his permission: it is now called Night Ops Remix (Retex), and our page for it is here!  The brick, stone and graffiti outdoor textures make it a quite different place from the luna-textured version.
TA Clan (Total Annihilation) may be gone, but the other TA (The Ancients) is back, Peps announces; he hopes to arrange some clan matches!  Flame's single-player map which he entitled Operation: Payback (see here) is now available from Wizkid's site. One of Flame's recent maps, Slums of NYC Remix, can give sound or stability problems, we find, so best to treat it as a "beta" at the moment.
Tuesday December 4th, 2001:
B-Ball has got a new weapon for you on his site (here), on the Weapons page - a triple strike where the three rockets in alt fire mode don't spread out so much.  Just download the tiny (11k) file, unzip it into your nerf/system folder, and then, in the game, open the console and type in "summon tripleshotdemo.tripleshotdemo" - and the TS will behave, in alt fire mode, more the way it does in the NAB demo!
Boom's ISP is having problems, so he may well vanish from our sight for a few days; he has already had a one-day outage.  Wizkid has added a useful map-type shot here of his arena,
Island of Death Beta
- our review'n'screenshot is here, right?
Over on the Star Wars Clan website, Flame has released three very nice remixes: they are
November
(our page is here), Observatory)( (here), and Slums of NYC Remix (here)!  Grab them right away, but be aware that Flame does sometimes use texture files you may not already have.  Opening up NerfEd shows me he's used tlabcomp here, and plutonic urban, alamo,
PM-D
, PM-E, Ancient, and Urban 2, while for his sounds, he's included (for Slums) AmbCity and AmbModern. If you have been adding recent maps you probably have almost all of these; Tmon & Tux's Textures page has most of the textures, while if you have Unreal Tournament installed, most of them, and the sound files, can easily be copied over to your NAB folders.  If you find you are unable to get anything, such as the 5.82MB AmbModern sound file, let us know and we'll just have to get Flame to post it somewhere!  Certainly, if everyone does acquire all these files, then a lot of future maps can be a lot more ambitious...
Wednesday November 28th, 2001:
Boomslang has quite a big update on his site, recently revamped using Ace's hi-tech wizardry; he has also posted some new NAB Fiction on the forum, check it out, well, somewhere in there...
Curt released a new map just in time for Saturday's celebrations: Dragon's End Beta
was the name, and our review'n'screenshot page is here!  It is a "beta", so is not perfect, but it is a nice place for a fairly small fight, with good gameplay and nice use of textures.  The SLAM-arranged event ran pretty well, with, due to the earlier time, rather more support from Britain and Continental Europe than before.  There was even a brief game of "Target Tag", and you don't see that very often, as well as the usual fun over in the Nerf Neighbourhood.  Hmm, I wonder if SLAM's pledge to finish up all his maps by February means that the day and night versions of that map will be re-done in a crash-proof manner?
One thing that will help future get-togethers is that Policer_O has kindly increased the capacity of the Thunder Clan Dedicated Server that he hosts for NAB.  As you may have noticed, it will now take 16 of us at once, which could be very useful -  if you have ever been outside watching a full server and hoping someone will leave soon, you will know what I mean!
Saturday November 24th, 2001:
SLAM has spoken!  "Saturday, November 24, 5:00 PM EST, we will be meeting online for a game. Looks like Voldo will be hosting the server. I am making a post at the NAB forums here. Go check it out," he says - and who are we to argue?  "Looks like Voldo will be hosting the server, and will probably be able to handle a full 16-player server!"  So that is 5.00pm on the East Coast, or 10:00pm GMT, 11:00pm in Europe - a much better time for a reunion than the early hours of Sunday morning!  Personally, I would suggest good old Nerf Neighbourhood, or a bit of "Target Tag" perhaps?
We added Wizkid's site recently, and he now has a map available for download - it is only a "beta", but a pretty ambitious one and well worth checking out.  So take the first step and visit our review'n'screenshot page here, okay?
SLAM has removed the Curt/Crossfire element from the "NAB Gallery" site, and comments there on the NAB Forum events; there is a new "proper" site at the "Clan Destiny - UT" link we have, instead of just a holding page.  Boom has changed his "Enter" page to an audiovisual presentation, but it doesn't lead to up-to-date news when I checked.  And the TA Clan has been disbanded, Braveheart says...
Thursday November 22nd, 2001:
And to our American readers, a Happy Thanksgiving!  Tux_the_Penguin tells me that he has added the recently-released maps to his and Tmon's website: that's Icedude's "Ice Map Pack 1" as a pack and individually (EZDM, Circular Forts Stadium, and the weird Abstract Luna), Little Islands by B-Ball, TEAK Training Map, CD DISK Training, and Maths Arena by Adam, and
Maralia Remix Beta 3
by Darth Animal. Darth was asking for a little feedback on his map before he issued the final version, so why not "play-test" it, and send him a suggestion or two.  All of these have been available if you knew where to look, but it's good to have them all in the one place - the best place to get your maps from, certainly!  Tux has had masses to do at work and at home, including wrestling with the magistr worm/virus on friends' & family PCs - add two weeks of server problems, and it's no wonder he's been quiet lately.
Foul deeds over at the NAB Forum: Crossfire/Curt hacked into the board and took control away from the admins (or so he boasted - when FeEdiKo sent a complaint to EZboard, he quickly removed the post where he admitted everything), and has barred the admins from administrating, and generally messed around with people's status. "Ugh, this is a joke! JUST STOP IT, CURT!!" says Ace, and  "You show SOOOO much maturity doing that. I mean, you wonder why they banned you in the first place", comments West Seiydder sarcastically...  Check the thread here, if you dare!
Yesterday Homestead said this site weighed in at 48MB, almost up to the 50MB limit...but today it's listed as a mere 40MB, which is nice, unless some pages have got lost and I don't know about it.  Let me know if you notice anything strange!
Wednesday November 21st, 2001:
A brand-new and very nice map from B-Ball is out now: Little Islands!  Check out our review 'n' screenshot here, and then follow its link to B-Ball's downloads page.  It is not big, but it's a fine place for 2-5 players to have a great fight - and B-Ball has got the Bots working well there too.  "A great Deathmatch map" is Joey's verdict - ours too!
And we've added a new website to our Links and Front pages - it belongs to Wizkid, so check it out.  Downloads are promised soon!
When SLAM joins the Coast Guard in February, he tells me "Boot camp will last eight weeks. After graduation, I will be shipped off to wherever I'm being stationed. Not long after that, I should be buying my very first not-old computer."  So he will be away from us for a while - but not forever!
The mapmaking contest is off to a good start, with Icedude and SLAM signing up, and Darth Animal checking tutorials to see how you make 'em instead of just remixing 'em!  Some recently mentioned maps-in-progress are now with Tux, who hopefully should be uploading them soon to the Tmon'n'Tux site.
I know this site does not get updated now as often as in the past - but looking at the "Archives I" page, the updates used to be a lot shorter than we manage these days!
Monday November 19th, 2001:
Four new review'n'screenshot pages are up now - only one of the maps has actually been published, however!  That's (TT) Army Base (Beta) by BLades, so check out our page here and then head for his site!   I've been looking at a great pair of maps by Flame, Observatory )( Remix (here) and Forest )i( (here) - but he needs to offer downloads for Ancient.utx and
AmbOutside.uax
, large Unreal Tournament texture and sound files, before most of us will be able to enjoy them. Castle (beta) is a promising start to mapmaking for NAB from D (our page is here) - nice to see him back on NAB, though the map does have "grass-clipping" in the same way as Sk8er's Forest 2!
Flame has had what seems like a good idea, but one that will only work if people support it: a mapmaking contest.  There will be a number of judges; the deadline is Tuesday 11th December; original maps only, no remixes; use of prefabs is allowed; use up to three NAB texture files and two UT ones, plus any you make yourself; you will need a special number, rather than your name to put on the map, so that the judges can be impartial... contact Flame@emailx.net for full details!  He did mention that the map ought to have an "urban" theme, but I am not sure if that is actually part of the rules or just a suggestion...  Anyone who thinks "Bah, bet it' won't work" ought to either make a map for it or volunteer to be a judge, I think!
SLAM passed the test to join the US Coast Guard - after seeing action on board the good ship Pacific Fury, how could he fail?  "I will be entering boot camp and basic training in about three months, at which point you'll hear absolutely nothing from me. Until then, however, I intend to crank out the best maps ever played, and finish up every other one I've started", he says - so check out his site regularly!
Boom promises an expanded Captions 2.2 shortly; he has new Nerf Fiction too, though the typeface is hard to read!  B-Ball has updated his "Codes" (or "cheats") page, which is useful - and Ace is working on a "Skatepark Map Pack", which ought to be well worth waiting for...
Wednesday November 7th, 2001:
Boom reports that using XP on his computer didn't work out. "If you don't have XP it would be a good idea not to get it! It can't find a lot of drivers you have on your computer; most everything you have on your computer will not run on XP. Until they have about 200 patches for all the things they've messed up on, I would caution you on getting XP. So I went back to ME, and everything is okay."   His new Captions 2-1 map is now available - check out our review'n'screenshot page here!
We also have a page up for Death Mueseim-tux, the revised version that doesn't need a large texture file to run, here.  Tracer and Icedude were spotted testing a revised version of Tracer's Trip in the Head - while Darth Animal apparently was experimenting with something, a Supply Line Remix.  A nice CTF map, with snow, and a moving train - but sadly it comes to NAB with some bad clipping in a number of places, so unless it is released as a curiosity, it's not a map we can expect to play.  He'll just have to get back to that Urban Uprising Remix instead, right?
Adam has shown me a revised Lava Swim ][ - I don't think it is quite the finished version yet, however.  Still plenty of nice hot lava to swim about in!  BLades has changed his "NerfArcade" site to a new look, and is working on making his own game apparently - details shortly, he promises!  And I've got rid of a few map files, updated a few links (so those maps can be got from Tmon'n'Tux) - and found room to post a pair of textures, SGTech1 and
Quake3a
, so if you haven't got them, download them now!

Saturday November 10th, 2001:
SLAM has put out the call: "Hey all! I wanted to let you know that... today, Saturday, November 10 is when we are having the NAB Old Timerz Reunion!  It's going to be at 9:00 PM EST, and we will meet in Thunder Clan Dedicated Server, until and if another server (or set of servers) is established.  I know not everyone will be able to make it, and even if everyone does, we might not be able to handle everyone in one server. So, if you're capable of making a server, e-mail me, or better yet, talk to me on MSN, and we'll get a series of servers set up so there will be room for everyone.  I want to restate something at this time, about why I'm still here and helping organize this, even though I can play UT and other "better" games now:  I was the first to bring NAB onto the web, and help get its community together, and I'll be the last to turn out the lights and leave. SO, just so I don't have to do that, I'm going to try to keep a series of games running from time to time like this one."
So, that's 9:00pm on America's Eastern seaboard, or (gulp) 2:00am on Sunday morning GMT - 3:00am in Germany and thereabouts.  Time to set my alarm again!
Tracer has announced that the revised Trip In The Head arena that he was working on is finished - it hasn't turned up in my in-box yet, but when we get it, we will add a new page to the review'n'screenshot array.  Or maybe the old page will just get updated, if the changes are minor?  Stay tuned!

Tuesday November 13th, 2001:
The "Reunion" went pretty well, I think - there are always going to be problems on these occasions, and one of the designated server-makers couldn't be there, while SLAM himself was hauled away rather early on.  We have reprinted the main Forum-posting reports, and added a couple of screenshots, here, okay?
We uploaded Icedude's new "Ice Map Pack 1", which includes Abstract Luna (our review'n'screenshot is here), Circular Forts Stadium (here), and EZDM (here) - not the most wonderful maps ever seen, but fun, and worth the download, I hope you agree.  Any of those pages gives you the usual "download now" button for the pack, which also includes a small texture file that one map needs.
Also available for your downloading pleasure are three new maps from Adam - check
out our r'n's pages for CD_DISK-Training (here), TEAK-Training-map (here), and Maths Arena (here)!  Adam can now texture movers, add sounds, and make a proper "skybox", which is pretty good going, I think.
Apparently Darth Animal has just a few last-minute tweaks to do to his latest map, the very lovely Urban Uprising Remix, whch is a "sister map" to Urban Terror Remix which you already have, I hope.  You'll need it, anyway, as the new map, like the other, uses the Plutonic Urban texture pack which came with Terror.  Justin assisted by texturing the lift (or elevator), while Flame helped with the play-testing - which is why Darth has that tweaking to do, I think!  Darth has been trying to remix a new UT map which I'd better call DM-SkullF*** - the actual playing area looks good, but he says he is in all sorts of trouble with a fiendishly complicated skybox, so we needn't expect that one for a while, I guess!
Saturday November 3rd, 2001:
We've got a new map from Adam for you, to keep you warm now that November is upon us: it's called Lava Swim!  Click here for the review'n'screenshot page, which also has its own download now button for you...  It isn't big, but it is clever!
Icedude reports that he is working on a pointblast Water Park map - and he sent me a copy of the unfinished version, so you can check out the review'n'screenshot page (unfinished)
here
, okay?  And, on the subject of unfinished maps, Tracer tells me that in about a week he hopes to finish up Trip In The Head, which has had its own review 'n' screenshot page (here), with an "unf" rating, for months!
And another new review'n'screenshot page with "unfinished" against it belongs to Darth Animal's upcoming Urban Uprising Remix (here), a companion map to the remarkably popular Urban Terror Remix (still here).  It uses the same 5.93MB texture file as before, "Plutonic Urban", which won't be in the new zip as you'd not want to download it twice - so make sure you have the older map, okay?   With the same textures, the new map is similar to the old one in many places, but the geography is new.  If you liked the old one (and who didn't?), you should be looking forward to the finished version of the new one!
Boomslang reports that he has safely installed Windows XP: "Worth the money", he says!  B-Ball has his Nerf Federation page up, with details of the clans involved.  And, on the TA Clan site, the revised Death Mueseim is now uploaded,   with the file-name now ammended to PM-DeathMuseim-tux, as Tux_the_Penguin helped to remove its dependency on the large (well, 1.50MB) Egypt Unreal Tournament texture file.
Wednesday October 31st, 2001:
All Hallow's Eve - Halloween!  Maybe not the best year for "Trick or Treat" stuff, but check out Renegade's suitably spooky story anyway, here!  Fun, heheheheh...
Well, I have deleted some maps from this site, and moved the links to Tux's site - which made room for Adam's latest crop!  The "download now" buttons are on the review'n'screenshot pages, for Adam's Living Room here, for Corridors ][ here (now with water), for Water Adventure here, and for World's HIGHEST Dive here!  There are some nice ideas on show in these maps, and they are generally not very big downloads, with no extra texture files needed at all - so grab them, right?
Crossfire/Curt was saying that his next "farewell party" is likely to be next Saturday night/Sunday morning (2:00am GMT - 9:00pm EST) rather than this weekend - more news on that when we have it!
And on the NAB Forums, FeEdiKo has got a new system of stars going - the more you post, the cooler it gets - so if you've not registered yet, now is the time, okay?
Tuesday October 30th, 2001:
Ace is still working on his "gamefrag" (or "fraggame", he says) mutator.  "I made it so that your score would go up by 1 for every player that you frag.  And I set it so it gets rid of targets & points pickups. That would be bad if I didn't!  The only thing I'm stuck on is, well, every time you shoot a player, you get 25 points, or a bonus 100 points for a head shot, right?  Well, I'm having trouble getting rid of that.  So I'm kinda stuck currently. I'll get back to you if I find out anything.  This could possibly be the best NAB mutator ever made!"  It certainly ought to be fun.
At the bottom of the Star Wars Clan front page you will find a download for a new remix by Darth Animal.  It isn't quite finished yet, but if you have the richrig texture file (available from Tmon & Tux here) do download it and take a good look at the arena.   The name of the map is Maralia Remix Beta 3 - and our review'n'screenshot page is here.  Give Darth some feedback and he will give it a final "polish" and release it properly...  And yes, it does have some great ambient noises in it!
Adam has kept busy making maps: Adam's Living Room is one of those "tiny people in giant house" maps (see it here), while Water Adventure has been improved (here) - and there's Corridors ][ too, which I need to take a screenshot of!  He demonstrated some "cheatcodes" I wasn't aware of, including "set playerpawn skin Ted" (or any other Bot name, no quotation marks).  It doesn't work with every Bot-skin every time, but the Troy model certainly looks strange with different skins on - such as Callie of the Lunas! To look at your own player-avatar, use "behindview 1" for a back view, then "feigndeath" freezes your character so that you can move the camera-view to the front.  And the "jump" key, whichever you use, unfreezes you, okay?  Or you can just experiment in a map that has a mirror in, such as Frigate Remix, of course...
Thursday October 25th, 2001:
At the bottom of the Star Wars Clan front page you will find a download for a new remix by Darth Animal.  It isn't quite finished yet, but if you have the SGTech1 texture file (it would be in your Unreal Tournament textures folder, if you have that game installed and up-to-date with its Bonus Packs) do download it and take a good look at the arena.  It's called Spiridian Remix Beta 5 - and our review'n'screenshot page is here.  With some help from Tux_the_Penguin, Darth's TieBay Remix now has a newer version, with the new title of TieBay Remix ][...some minor texture changes, such as a darker floor in the main bay that now looks less like the "default" bubbly concrete, plus some nicely atmospheric ambient sounds as you walk around.  The texture file for TieBay (either version), deathstarpf, is now on Tmon & Tux's site here!
Flame seems to be doing some nice work lately (though he is away from NAB for ten days now); Slums of NYC Remix is looking good and must be nearly finished, it is in some ways very similar to the popular Condemned Remix.  And Adam has just finished an improved and corrected version of Water Adventure, which looks like fun.
If you visit the NAB Forums, you'll know that SLAM is trying to assemble a team to make a NAB "mod" for Unreal Tournament, so that the NAB maps, skins & gameplay can live on.  If you can help, look up the appropriate topic, and sign up!  Meanwhile, Ace is working on a mutator for NAB that would change the scoring system so that only "kills" are registered, not ordinary points: "gamefrag" - or "fraggame", rather.   Could be interesting...
Sunday October 21st, 2001:
The "Farewell Party" for Crossfire/Curtsquirt went pretty well - guests included B-Ball, Lucky, Boom, the reclusive Troy (DRC Clan), Justin, and Harpo, and some good games were had.  Ace managed to get into "Spectator" mode, so that all we saw was a small chess-piece icon moving around; Troy joined him.  I got back to bed soon after 3:00am, but as that was only 10:00pm EST, the fun may well have continued.  One very slight downer to report, though - Curt never showed up!  B-Ball says that was due to problems with his computer...
Tux reports that Primemaster had a server crash "because of a bad SCSI hard drive controller" which kept his downloads unavailable for a day - all is well now, though.  Darth Animal and Flame's tripod-hosted maps such as Naboo Remix, TieBay Remix, and Operation Payback are probably unavailable at present, as Tripod deleted Flame's site.  O:P's "walktrough 1" has to go in your /nerf/system folder apparently - I've not got it to work for me yet, I got an error message, I must try again!  Darth is investigating a new UT map, DM-Spiridian, with a view to remixing it, but it's a bit large and complex...
A new clan website joins our links: Blizzard Clan!  BlobBlob is responsible for the website, while the co-founders are Sputnik and Scott.
And Adam has sent me his latest map, after finally getting NerfEd working again - it's called "Water Adventure", so watch for a new review'n'screenshot page for it soon.

Thursday October 18th, 2001:
"I've added the .BMP source files to the web site on the Textures page for anyone that would want to make their own .utx Texture set", Tux_the_Penguin reports.  "There are sets on the site for cwbtextures, cwbtextures2, publictextures, and senntextures."  Meanwhile, Darth Animal's Star Wars-themed TieBay Remix has now been released, after Flame added a few extra weapons to the back corridors.  Our page for it is here.  Also added to the Star Wars Clan Downloads Page are Flame's Naboo Remix (here), and a single-player mission map which he calls Operation: Payback (here) - and he even provides a walkthrough for it, in case you get stuck!  It seems to me to work pretty well, not that I have found the way to the final battleground yet... What impressed me most is the way that the Bots you kill actually leave useful stuff behind, like a megashield, or health.
Wow, two Star Wars maps - cleverly timed to coincide with the release of the dvd of "The Phantom Menace", I suppose!
"I just had a wicked idea a minute ago of making a single map or collection of maps called 'CTF Collision'," SLAM mentions on the Forum,  "In which two of the original PM maps "collide," and form a CTF map.I believe that the levels could be rotated and attached correctly to make well-balanced, totally different, and yet familiar CTF maps. It may be necessary to make a few changes, but I'll work with it."
If you are a long-time NAB player, don't miss Crossfire/CurtSquirt's official leaving party on Sunday morning from 2:00 to 3:00am, UK time (9:00 to 10:00pm Saturday evening, EST) - he does intend to release a couple more NAB maps, and maybe still be on the Forum, but it is still the end of an era...I suppose I'd better set my alarm clock.  Alpha Flight/Black Dragon won't be there, however - "I had a virus and everything is GONE", he says.  A good reason to check that your computer has some up-to-date protection against that sort of thing!

Wednesday October 17th, 2001:
So what has Tux been doing lately?  Oh yes, "I've put a new freeware texture set on the site called senntextures.zip, which has Quake-like freeware textures from Senn. It has 3 sizes of most of the textures for use on most any surface. It includes wall, floor, and column textures and a few more", he tells me.  "I've also put up all of the Beta maps that I have on a new Beta Maps page. I didn't want to mix the Beta maps in with the released maps."  Makes sense to me...
So, Darth Animal... ah yes, Gladiator Remix is now on the Star Wars Clan website, and it looks like a fun, high-energy map - visit the review'n'screenshot page here.  We have also got a page up for Unreality ][ Remix (here), a map under (re-)construction by Jedi Knight, at least that is the name in the credits - at the moment it makes nice use of three or four of those new cwbtextures textures for a suitably mellow stone effect.
SLAM and Radio Shack have parted company - until he gets a new job his computer time is severely limited, but he has a report on the News Update Channel about the maps he is working on for Tiggy's CTF mod-to-be: Opposing Hills, Tribe vs. Tycoon, "Dream Mansion", Split Towers, and a fifth map.  The first three of these are practically finished, SLAM says - apart from the actual mechanics of adding the code for the flags to capture, I think!  They certainly sound like good stuff, and worth waiting for.
Monday October 15th, 2001:
It seems that every update lately has been about Tux_the_Penguin, with a few lines about Darth Animal to finish up.  So, moving right along...
Tux has added a couple of useful-looking legal and free-to-use texture files to his site, known as cwbtextures and cwbtextures2 - some really mellow-looking brick and stone effects, available at three different sizes, mainly, so that you can choose what size of bricks you put in a wall if you're making a map.  He has also expanded publictextures, as mentioned yesterday, so remember to replace the first version if you downloaded it. "I'm thinking about putting a thumbnail picture of the new texture sets up on the web site", Tux informs me, which seems a good idea.  Thumbnails of every texture file would be useful for mappers, come to that!
Okay, it must be Darth Animal time now.  I've expanded the review'n'screenshot page for his work on Dogtown Remix Beta 1 to include Beta 2 and a suitable screenshot (here); I've also got a page up for the brand-new Vindictive Remix, here - full of richrig-style metal texture goodness!  If you downloaded Darth's Obscura Remix you will already have that particular texture file...if not, that would be a good place to start!  Both maps are available from the Star Wars Clan website, of course.
B-Ball has been working on his maps, but I am sworn to secrecy there - in fact, forget I said anything, okay?  Someone who said he had made the first lego map-pack (as "The Unknown") apparently told one of our news sources that two maps for his next pack are finished now; presumably he wants to release three or four together, as a second map-pack, so release is not yet imminent.  And Tiggy was wrestling with the coding for the CTF mod, and not getting very far with that particular stage of it, so let's wish him luck!
Wednesday October 10th, 2001:
Boom announces a new clan, "A Real Klan" or "ARK".  "It is going to be a gaming clan which will team up in game if others want to, and help newbies in the game make it to the tops", he says, and promises a website next week.  Icedude has "unlocked" his Homestead website; Tux tells me that he is replacing "the PM-DeathMueseim.zip at Braveheart's request with a new version that doesn't require Egypt.utx anymore", which seems like a good idea!  Adam's new map Sequoia House 2 has hit a problem, and he is waiting for some expert advice on how to sort it out.  The map lost all gravity somehow... Adam and I have been using MSN Messenger "voice chat" while playing NAB online a couple of time recently; providing you set the chat up before you start NAB, it seems to work well, and saying "eek" and "ouchie" is quicker than typing, I find!
And Darth Animal seems to have been busy again.  Check out the review'n'screenie to be found here, for Obsessive Remix - does that look wonderful, or what?  As well as that, investigation of the lower portion of the Star Wars Clan index page reveals a download link for "Dogtown Remix Beta 1" (plus the Urban2 texture file and a link to Tux's publictextures) - though Darth says "it is too big a job for me, I just cannot find suitable textures for it", so the map may well stay in a weird, only slightly-textured state unless someone else comes along - see our R'n'S page here.  Cool place to explore, though!   Flame is working on various projects, too, including a special Star Wars Clan map, which sounds interesting.
Monday October 8th, 2001:
Almost a week since the last update?  Well, not much has been happening, really.  Darth Animal released the finished Sion Remix, which you can check out here; this version uses the "tlabcomp" texture file, which you have probably got by now (or see the link on the review 'n' screenshot page), and PU-TL-window, included in the zip.  Plenty of cobwebs, and a nice playable arena, I'd say.
Justin's Forest ][ makes the arena less "laggy", as Justin has removed the mist that slowed things down a little before; check here for info on more of the place's secrets!  And Justin has actually updated his website...
After I deleted the individual screenshot pages, Homestead now come through with an offer of 25MB of space for only $1.00 for six months!  If any other site wants to unlock their pages and has a "paypal" account or access to a friendly credit card, the special code to use is apparently OCTGFTEEN.
Tux_the_Penguin is working hard; he has almost every map on his and Tmon's site now (here) - 289 of them, and counting!  If you are making or remixing maps, he has put together a new texture file (on the Textures Page) called publictextures, which you should get!  "It's based on freeware textures by Jeremy Engleman at Art Net", Tux says. 1423KB is a reasonable size for so many fresh textures, I think.  That page also has a lot of the texture files you sometimes get told you need, so if you are searching for texture file, that's the first place to look for them.
And Adam has just about finished Sequoia House 2 - so there may be a report on that shortly, okay?
Tuesday October 2nd, 2001:
I met Ace on-NAB last night, and he has given me the go-ahead to release his excellent new map, Inferno 4 - so yesterday's R'n'S page (here) now has a "download now" button.  It is a fine arena, so what are you waiting for?
Tux tells me in an e-mail "I've added 14 new freeware texture web site links on our site on the links page. There are some really good free textures on those sites and some are geared toward use in games."  That page also has links to the two best places to learn about map-making, I see, so if you want to make maps, that is an essential page to visit!
Well, the Homestead axe fell; Blades, TA Clan, DRC, and Star Wars Clan are still there, but almost all the other Homestead-based sites are gone.  Flame and Darth Animal had obviously prepared for the change, including getting rid of their useful old downloads section; DRC appear to have removed two pages, fitting their contents onto the bottom of two other pages!  Most of the sites that are gone (unless their owners trim them down to size) had not been updated for a while... but they'll still be missed.  Our new single-page "Screenshots" section is up - a very slow download, I'm afraid, but it was the only way to do it, and better than losing the shots altogether.
Monday October 1st, 2001:
Boom is back in business, playing NAB on a reliable computer set-up again and updating his site, which is very good news; that nice re-design by Ace has been up for a while, with no new news on it!  Boom has not lost his NAB skills, I can report...
Adam has sent me his first four maps for posting; they are pretty simple, as first maps ought always to be, but the downloads are small, so why not investigate?  The review'n'screenshot for his CrossBeam is here, for Empty is here, for Doublesided is here, and for the slightly more complex Sequoia House is here!  And they all have "download now" buttons!  The files are all very small, so there's no reason not to grab them...
Ace has sent me a copy of his new Inferno 4 map - I don't know if he wants it released yet, but the review'n'screenshot is here, for your first "sneak peek"!
I have started to update the "download now" links on the R'n'S pages - a big job, it will take weeks I think! The new links, which generally go to Tmon & Tux's site's downloads, are in pale blue instead of orange (a pale green link-button indicates we are hosting the map ourselves at the moment). Tux_the_Penguin is working hard to add every map, and every texture pack - a job he is well on the way to finishing. Also, at the end of the "textures" section, he has added a freeware image editor program: "I've tested it and it seems very capable. It's no Photoshop or PaintShop Pro, but it will convert and resize graphic images, which is what is needed to get them like you want them for importing into NerfEd as a Texture set", Tux tells me.  With the ending of the "nbci" downloads that NerfArenaBlast.com relied on, it is good to know we have a reliable source for maps in coming months.  Tux is upgrading his site to allow for an unlimited number of files posted, which can't be bad!
Saturday September 29th, 2001:
Remember, this weekend will be your last chance to see quite a few NAB websites, particularly the older ones on our "Links" page.  Homestead, host to most NAB sites, will shut down any site with more than 3 pages (and 8MB of files) unless they've been paid thirty dollars.  So, if you have a site, trim it back, or on Monday nobody will be able to see it!  Some pages of this site may vanish, too - particularly the old "screenshots" array, although I have been working on a new simplified version of that.  My "nerfarena", "nerfarena1", "nabreview" and "nabrevue" addresses should be okay, if the transition doesn't blow up their servers or something... but if some sites are not there on Monday morning, don't panic!
B-Ball got in touch to make a small ammendment to the instructions he gave us on Monday for running his mutators - we have already changed our description there, but do note the "2" in the example now!  We do now have a review 'n' screenshot page up for Darth Animal's next arena, TieBay Remix, here, but the map has not actually been released yet.  Look for it on the Star Wars Clan downloads page soon, once Flame has added a few more weapons in the corridors, which he reckons it needs.
SLAM has been seen testing CTF-Opposing Hills with Duo on a server, but it is not yet clear whether this means that Tiggy's CTF mod is working now.  We must be getting close to the first release, though, so keep watching the news updates...
Tmon & Tux are working on adding more texture files to their site, as well as maps; it is already a prime source for maps and textures (and mutators), but it sounds as if it will soon be even better - and they don't use Homestead, so no problems there, come Monday!
Wednesday September 26th, 2001:
A new remix from Darth Animal is out - Obscura Remix looks great to me, its textures are intricate and seem faithful to the UT original.  For our screenshot and review, you need to click
here
!  It seems to be the first NAB map to use a quite popular UT texture pack, richrig, which is included in the zip.  While Darth still hasn't finished Sion Remix, I'm told that a new remix of a Star Wars map is almost ready for release: TieBay Remix!  This uses the original UT texture pack, deathstarpf, which is fairly large, but the effect should be worth it.  A bit of final "beta testing" with Flame, and it should be released, so keep watching the Star Wars Clan site for details, I guess!  And Flame has just about finished the texturing of Naboo Remix, so that's another good reason to check in there...
The map rotation on the welcomed-back "13th Monkey" server has been:
     PM-MorpheusRemix
     PM-AirBeta
     PM-Forest
     PM-LaserRemix
     PM-LavaRun2-1
     PM-SpaceNoxxRemix
     PM-UndergroundRemix
But that is liable to change, as Ions downloads and tests maps suggested on the NAB Forum - so check in there if you have suggestions!  In fact, remember to keep an eye on the Forum generally - especially our News Update Channel of course.  If you keep up-to-date with that, you'll have had Obscura Remix a day earlier...
Killer, not seen on NAB for a while, says "put on fly go on a jump pad and you will have no fly, but you can jump super high and go super fast" - I'll have to test that out!
Monday September 24th, 2001:
Our review'n'screenshot page for Justin's Forest is now done, here - complete with our "download now" button!  The map isn't perfect, but it is a whole lot of fun, especially with our guide to its many secrets!  The next map Justin is working on is Twin Towers, which may well end up as a CTF one: "a bit like Face Remix, but with about 10 floors on each tower, so, I'm going for a 9 rating on this one..."
B-Ball has a new pack of mutators available, so grab it, and then read the ReadMe carefully: Ballzooka, SecretShot, Sidewinder, Whomper and Wildfire Arena mutators, to make old maps new again.  The file goes in your c:/program files/atari/nerf/system folder.  The command should be open PM-Forest?mutator=mutators.WildfireArena - or whatever map and weapon you want to use; you need to be in "adminlogin" first of course.  Or if you have SLAM's NAB Commander installed, things are a little simpler... B-Ball made these mutators, with a little help from Tiggy, our expert on such things!  He also has a new wallpaper, and a new single player highscore to report.
"Nerf King, if he gets NAB again, will return", Pimp says.  BLades hopes to design his own skins for his Pro Fighters clan; his MoonBase map is updated, but still a "work in progress" and password-protected, so we can't see it yet!   And that is about all for now.  See you on NAB...
Friday September 21st, 2001:
On our News Update Channel, SLAM says "I've just finished a CTF map called "Opposing Hills". This map, I think, will please people who liked Forts of Independence, while it has a much better layout and level of playability than the original. This map is the first map in which I have used TerraEdit, a program for generating landscapes. The map features two low hills, each with a somewhat hastily constructed fortification on each. Between each hill is a good sized expanse of ground, with large rocks of different kinds scattered between for cover and a little creative sniping. Each base also has a trench up front, where the defenders can easily take cover and shoot at the same time. Each side has a tent, and this is where the flag will be found in CTF.
"I really like the feel of this map, although I *REALLY* hate the grass texture in NAB. The problem is just that it's used so much in this map, and there's no real alternative." When Tiggy is able to release the "CTF" mod, the map will be released, I imagine.
Flame has released a new map called "pryo", which looks quite fun and is a pretty small download. Click here for the traditional review and screenshot, and a link to the new map downloads page that he has been working on for the Star Wars Clan.  B-Ball has been in touch with (-)Ions, who says he will have a "13th Monkey" NAB server up again soon!  "I'll see if I can't have at least a test server up and running by Saturday", he told B-Ball, so that is something to look for.  Will it run the "Fat Boy" mod, I wonder?

Wednesday September 19th, 2001:
Pimp has been in touch, and tells me that he has been busy uploading and updating maps for NAB.com - so that looks like a good place to try if any maps have eluded you lately!  It probably means that a lot of my "download now" buttons are out of date now, something I will have to check up on when I have a lot of spare time...
On the NAB Forum, SLAM reports that "It looks as though Tiggy is very close to the finish of his long CTF project, and because of this, I have been contracted to make maps for it. .I already have one such map, Tribe vs.Tycoon, in the works and progressing well, but this should not be the only CTF map that ships as standard equipment!  While I plan on making some other combinations of the original NAB teams (A requirement in the design is to have a certain team against a certain team, as the flags are made, says Tiggy), I would like to get some ideas from the community as to how to design them, or have ideas for other original maps. I'm shooting for maybe 3-5 maps to go with it, and hopefully I'll have lots of ideas to choose from."  .
Now, does that sound interesting, or what?  A number of UT CTF maps have already been remixed as regular NAB maps, and hopefully will be adjusted at some stage to run Tiggy's mod - "Civil War Remix", for example, while "Target Tag" maps are also obvious targets for conversion, but SLAM wants to start with original stuff.  Keep watching on the Forums, or here, for updates!
Monday September 17th, 2001:
Tux_the_Penguin and Tmon have updated their site; Urban Arena ][ Remix is now half done, they say!  But they have been hard at work this weekend uploading maps, and their downloads pages now have 229 arenas available, as well as quite a few of the texture files we need, so if you're having trouble finding a working download for a map, that sounds like the best place to try!  Over at the Star Wars Clan website, Flame has been working on downloads too, which is good, as it always pays to have more than one source for these things - and a new map by him, Pryo, is about ready for release.
Looking at the NAB Forum, Justin is working on his first original map, which may well call itself "Justin's Forest" - and he has been asking for suggestions for useful things to include.  He is working on a remix of the UT CTF map StormChaser V2 as well, which includes a fully-functional tornado, my spies tell me.  Cool, or what?
Less than two weeks now until Homestead bars all non-paying sites with more than three pages; while this site is paid up for 50MB of space (and using around 43 already, mainly on the review'n'screenshot section), that does not include the "Screenshots" section, so visit it one last time while you can!  I have been working hard on a partial substitute here, but there is no way it can manage the full-size versions of the shots...as pages go, I think it will be a very slow loader!
Saturday September 15th, 2001:
Braveheart has his new Death Mueseim map for download on the TA Clan website - but be warned, it needs the Egypt texture file from UT (86KB map, 1.50MB textures), so if you don't have that, you can't get in!  But check out our review & screenshot here.  He is also working on maps called "The Matrix" and "Valley of Megiddo" - hopefully it will be a bit easier to stay alive in them...
Remember to check on the News Update Channel for any late-breaking news stories - and we'll be back here when there is enough news to fill some space, right?
Tuesday September 11th, 2001: A Day of Evil
Well, I am persuaded that I should print here what I recently posted on the NAB Forum:
Stark Evil
What a dreadful, dreadful thing. The thousands of people - the hundreds of plane passengers, the thousands of workers in the World Trade Center, on the floors above the impacts, or within a few floors of the impacts, or unable to get out before the towers collapsed. The Pentagon workers... It is all too ghastly to think about. You could see even Yasser Arafat was shaken by it when he condemned it, and I hope the Palestinians shown celebrating in the streets soon realized how enormous the horror of the thing was. The Islamic terrorists in the planes were just "foot soldiers", there remains a terrible source of evil somewhere out in the Middle East, a group who planned this for years, and are now no doubt planning more atrocities. No Western intelligence agencies seem to have had any idea of what was going to happen...
There are no easy conclusions, no easy targets for reprisals. It is simply a fact that a terrible and evil act of mass murder has been committed, and our hearts go out to all the victims, and to their friends and families. We will pray for them.

The review'n'screenshot page for Braveheart's Armagedon Beta 2 is now up, here - and we also have a page for Sion Remix Beta by Darth Animal, here - so take a look, okay?

Thursday September 13th, 2001:
SLAM has given me a link to a mysterious new screenshot - click here!  "Be patient, it's a big file" he says! And it proves that, while he may have been quiet lately, he has as ever been working on something big for us.  It looks very interesting, of course!
Talking of which, I may have to stop thinking of Darth Animal as a "newbie mapper", since his new release is just great!  Almost all credit should go to the original maker of the map for UT, but it looks wonderful, plays beautifully, and I think has enough ammo, weapons and pick-ups for an excellent game, with or without Bots. It has the extremely unfortunate title (in the wake of Tuesday's horrors) of Urban Terror Remix - it weighs in at 4.86MB, because there is a custom texture file to make it look so awesome, but trust me, it is worth it!  The review and screenshot page can be found here, so check it out.  You will be glad you did.  The page has a "download now" button: make it so...
Darth has also re-done Sion Remix without using the unnecessary huge "skycity" texture file - this time, he says, it is based on "tlabcomp", which you probably already have. The only file he could find that included a decent cobweb!  A little bit of "beta testing" is to be done before the new version is to be released, but it ought to be a nice map when it's ready.
Blades announces that, as well as the mover-rich Area 51 Remix, he is working on a map called "MoonBase", with a little help from SLAM.  His sister is now playing NAB as "TombRaider".  Skippy, meanwhile, has left NAB for a quiet retirement in Tribes 2...  B-Ball has updated, to express his sympathy with our American friends.  Our thoughts and our prayers are still very much with them.
Monday September 3rd, 2001:
I would have updated before now, if there had been any news to report; with the new school year starting for many of us, things have been quiet!  Ace promises an update to his site shortly, while B-Ball has a nice big update on his site; he has added a new wallpaper, starring the dancers from "Nerf Neighbourhood", and there is also a new screenshot of a good game we had last Sunday.  There is a new "Single Player High Score" to report; he also has a new e-mail address, B3Ball@web.de - so forget the old one! Some e-mails he sent me didn't get through to the Custer@NerfArena.com address; for ordinary e-mails I suggest you use hotmail (CusterCD01@hotmail.com), or if you are sending me a map, use Custer@PlanetNAB.com, okay?  Often map files, even zipped, are too big to fit into the space hotmail allows...If I haven't replied to something, better try again, I guess...
But the big update is on The Blast Zone, at last.  Tiggy reports on the problems he is running into in trying to get "Capture The Flag" to work in NAB - some of them look hard to beat, so if you hav any skills in that area, I'm sure Tiggy would welcome the input.  He has not finished his ballblast map yet - but he does have, from Warhawk, a revised version of Box Canyon Remix, available for download, with some revisions and now Bot support.  This has alway been a nice map, but not very stable, particularly online - let us hope that version two has overcome that problem!
B-Ball reminds me that NerfArenaBlast.com does have quite a wide range of texture files available - so if you download a map and when you try to play it get a message that you are missing a certain package, your first port of call should be...well, somewhere on that site, but I couldn't see a link to it.  B-Ball has given me the URL, and I have added the link to this page now: Textures Index!  Let's hope the downloads all still work well...

Tuesday September 4th, 2001:
The links to the NerfArenaBlast.com Textures Index page have been added now - and two new review and screenshot pages are now in residence here as well.  Blacktop by Braveheart is a remix of a UT map his father made - check it out here, but it does have an awful lot of grey in it!  Warbird's Box Canyon Remix V2 can be found here, and looks as good as ever, and more stable.  Ace and I played a good game there yesterday (and indeed in the screenshot he can be seen waving at the camera), and it is a fine place for a fast and furious game for two to four players.  When we were recovering from our exertions, he told me that he and SLAM are planning to work together on Inferno 4, so that sounds good; Nerf Mountain is another project of his.  And let's not forget the new skins he is working on!  I did remind SLAM the other day that he is supposed to release a revised and corrected version of Canyon Outpost, by the way - but no sign yet...

Friday September 7th, 2001:
NAB continues to be very quiet; we were definitely busier than before during the summer vacation period, and now things have slipped back, I suppose.  Ace has updated his site; he says he has uploaded all his maps, which he will presumably make available via links when he adds reviews of them.  He mentions that the Deep Space Station 2 project has been halted now, mainly because he wants to work on a new map.  "It involves some nice mountains, hills, and an ocean..."  That must be Nerf Mountain, then.
Justin and Darth Animal are attempting to remix another UT map, DM-Ares, but have been having trouble with "clipping" in one particular spot. An extra bit of wall cut down the size of the strobing, infinite-regression "error"; Justin has now managed to block off the bad spot almost entirely. It should be a rather nice map, with plenty of features.  Darth was also hoping to remix a map called DM-Axon this week or next, but after some hours adding Asteroid textures, found that it too had a "clipping" problem.  So maybe we won't be seeing it...
A lot of sites haven't been updated for a while; let us hope that Boom's and Joshman's in particular soon get back into the swing of things - and it must be about time that The Unknown's second pack of Lego maps was ready, right?  I just went all through Boom's "Missing Nerf" Forum, and that is a lot quieter than the main NAB Forum even, with nothing from its maker recently at all - he has been having computer problems, maybe he just can't get things working.  It will be good when he can get back on NAB, certainly!
Wednesday August 29th, 2001:
We have added Braveheart's first map, Armagedon (beta), to the roster now; find our R'n'S
page here!  And download it from the TA Clan site, should you be tempted...
Sahib has let us know about a few "missing" textures, so we have posted gators, along with also PM-TT-A and B_G2-1 (for AT-AT Barge Remix, Blue Psi & TT Soccer Stadium, and Blue_Ghost2's MAYDAY, respectively); Ancient, apparently needed for Sniper Garden, is too big for us to post - many times bigger than the map itself!  At this rate, we will soon need another site to upload these things to...  The trouble with texture files is that you don't know you need it until you try and run the map, when you get a "package needed" message briefly.  If you already have the texture for another map, you never know that you are using it.  It is a problem for mapmakers, too - which texture files can they use without any problems, because everyone has them?  If anyone has a list of the basic NAB textures that come on the disc, that would be very useful, I am told!
Sk8er has announced his departure from NAB, on the NAB Forum; "The End of a Legend" can be found here!  He is more into "real-world" Nerf these days, it seems.  "Maybe someday I'll open an old memory box and find the NAB CD and play it again for old time's sake", he says.  "Well, take care and God bless."  We haven't seen much of him for quite a while, but that won't stop us missing him...
Monday August 27th, 2001:
Blades has released his TT Soccer Stadium arena, and it looks like fun: check our R'n'S page (which is here), which includes the link to his website!  It is a nice small download, and a nice small map, just right for two-player teams to play Target Tag, or perfect for some regular pointblast.  The delay was due to problems with the "Target Tag" triggers, apparently.  Blades is now working on his Nerf Theme Park and Area 51 Remix maps, both of which sound as if they should be interesting.
Dax has given me the go-ahead to post his excellent new map Mini Log-Forts - so if you visit the R'n'S page, here, you will find a handy "download now" button. At this rate, it is not going to take long to fill up the 8MB allocation from the site that BlobBlob made available...
Oh yes, B-Ball's Anubis Remix has been slightly delayed; no sign of it yet, but B-Ball promises to let me know when it is available, and I'll let you know, either here or on the rather handy News Update Forum, okay?
Online yesterday: not just Duo and Spike and Skippy and B-Ball and Joey and me (and Braveheart), but Mikesmaf as well, back after many months!  Well, this is August Bank Holiday Monday here, with a clear blue sky and a gentle breeze, so I guess I may be going out this afternoon...
Sunday August 26th, 2001:
Darth Animal has issued the finished version of Voac Remix - go to our R'n'S page here for a look, and buttons to download it and the skybox texture it uses (in case you don't have it - check your folder first...hopefully you already have Tux's PU-Misc texture)!  I may have "undersold" Darth's Techno Tourney Remix, by the way - Planet Unreal has its UT original as "Map of the Week" for its "incredible design", so if you've not grabbed it yet, grab it now, okay?
SLAM has released Canyon Outpost - grab it from the NAB Gallery site's maps page if you can't wait, but you will have to replace it soon as SLAM makes a few last-minute changes.  "It needs more playerstarts, and one of the elevator tubes has a collision problem." He hopes to update it today!  He has also released the long-awaited arena he and B-Ball worked together on, entitled Frantic Remix.
B-Ball has also posted Frantic Remix on his site - hopefully Anubis Remix will have been uploaded by the time you read this, too!  B-Ball has also added a selection of NAB wallpapers; how about one of the ever-popular Nerf Neighbourhood dancers, B...?
Justin can't have managed to finish Affinity Remix before leaving on his two-week vacation; best not to rush these things!  Flame has also gone away for a week or so; he left as #1 on the CSports pointblast and team pointblast charts - he is now, at the time of writing, #5 and #6, which shows how quickly you get overtaken if you stop playing for a day or two!  I see Darth Animal himself is #1 at team pointblast at present - despite not having played it for a couple of days longer than Flame?  These statistics are enough to make one's head start to hurt...
Wednesday August 22nd, 2001:
A fine new arena from Justin awaits you: Radian Remix!  In UT it's a new "Capture the Flag" map, but it's fine for pointblast, and the Bots love it, so go to our screenshot & review page here - and use the handy "download now" button to grab the map!  Justin is now working on Adversity Remix, which should be a pretty good deathmatch location for two or three players.  And Dax has a new map which looks like fun, Mini Log-Forts - check out the review and screenshot here! I've asked Dax if he wants me to post the map - speaking of which, my space for such things is limited, if anyone without a Homestead site wants to sign up for a free "preview" site, and let me have the name and password to upload up to 8 MB's worth of maps there, that would be rather useful!
Alpha Flight tells me that there is a new clan out there - well, let me put it in his own words! "A little news for you - if you want to put it up you can. A clan called \x/oC is in NAB, and they are good. They've got four members already - Warlock and some others. I've seen them playing, and the leader is awesome...he is better than me now!  So this is all I know, right now anyways." Hmm, sounds interesting; there is always the possibility that Alpha Flight himself is part of the clan, but we must look out for them.  The full name, I've since discovered, is "Warriors of Chaos" - and their leader calls himself  (if I can cut and paste it) /X\äJäIñ¤\X/oÇ.£dr¤ - or MaJaln, even!
Sometimes if news (or a map) comes in just after an update has been posted here, I will be posting it on the NAB Forum in this topic thread, so if you want to be absolutely up to date with everything I know, try clicking there, okay?

Thursday August 23rd, 2001:
Justin strikes again, with Adversity Remix, a small and intense deathmatch arena for two to four players!  Go to our page for it here, and after looking at the screenshot and reading our words of wisdom, use the "download now" button.  BlobBlob was kind enough to set up a Homestead preview account for map downloads, so we've posted it there.  Justin's next map will be as little something called Affinity Remix, which he may or may not finish before going off on a two-week vacation tomorrow.  Looks like he has decided to go through the alphabet, remixing all the cool Unreal Tournament maps he can find!  His maps tend to need the tlabcomp texture file, so make sure you have it - it is on the Star Wars Clan front page.
Darth Animal has released Techno Tourney Remix - that's on the Star Wars Clan front page too.  It uses the Quake3a texture file - since most of SLAM's best maps use that, you should have it by now!  Our screenshot & review page is here.  He isn't as good at weapon and pick-up selection and placement as Justin, but the textures look good, as they tend to do with Quake3a, and the basic map is nice, with fine Bot action.
The "SLAM's Desk" page of the NAB Gallery site has news of a map called 'Canyon' that SLAM is making. "This is the working title for my next project, part map, and part learning experience. It is my first attempt to make a map dedicated to realistic land forms. The name more or less says it all, at least for the part I have complete now," SLAM says; unfortunately the promised screenshots do not appear, just empty boxes, at least so far - but Alpha Flight pointed me to the right places to find them - here and here and here, and here and here and here and here!  Alpha Flight also pointed me towards the Warriors of Chaos clan website, here - it is mainly to do with the Diablo II game, however.
Joshman's site is up again; he is still working on his WW2 map, but doesn't expect to finish it before the end of September.  $Baracuda$ is apparently in trouble - he can't find his NAB disc, and made his room so untidy looking for it he got "grounded" from the computer for a while.  I hope you find it soon, dude!

Friday August 24th, 2001:
As followers of our "News Update Channel" strand over at the NAB Forum will know, SLAM has released the first version of his new map/project, Canyon Test - can I resist the temptation to call it "Grand"?  Check out our screenshot & review page here!  It does remind me quite a bit of Lucky's much-loved Mazon Remix, though without the main fortress, but there is more to come - and some very good-looking new stuff, as one would expect.
West Sieydder's site seems to have dropped the NAB bit, to expose us to another facet of his life: "The Order Of The Alpha Paladins" - a bit of a surprise!  Joshman has updated since my visit yesterday - and so has Blades, who keeps us on our toes by not having the updates on his front page in date order.  He apologises for the delays, and promises Soccer Stadium (TT) pretty soon now.  He is also recruiting for his clan, Pro Fighters, and wants to do some map tutorials as well, so keep watching his site...
Well I was playing UT online last night, along with Vampires and BadBitches - for the gruesome background (well how was I to know that "friendly fire" could be lethal in the CTF InstaGib mod?), check the Orbital Station Forum Array!  Luckily, they are kind to this online UT newbie...and also ran a few maps that were familiar from NAB!
Tuesday August 21st, 2001:
The Star Wars Clan have released their first Star Wars-themed map, remixed from a popular Unreal Tournament arena: ATAT Barge Remix.  Check out our review and screenshot page here!  All-Terrain Armoured Transports are huge - this one is inside a barge, which itself is inside a big space-freighter, so this is a really large map, and great fun to explore.  It needs the tlabcomp texture file - if you've not got it yet, they have that available for download as well, lower down the page.  I gather that Flame and Darth Animal are now working on a second remix from the same UT source, Naboo Remix - Star Wars Clan members who have the password for their hidden page may find a part-textured version, I'm told!
Justin has released a new version of his LightLand neon-lit arena, now with an extra level to it: it is now called LightLounge!  Our R'n'S page is here, and it comes complete with our own "Download Now" button, since Justin asked us to post the map for him.
Over on the NAB Forum, "How to Pick Up Girls, the West Sieydder Way" is a new thread - ask Uncle Devon if you're having problems!  Click over to the forum, okay?
I've added a new piece to the FAQs page - how to take screenshots.  To do anything with them you need a "Paintshop Pro" type program, but old versions are around cheap, or indeed free - otherwise you can always just double-click on the icon in your System folder for a quick look, I guess...
Sunday August 19th, 2001:
We have posted BlobBlob's first map, Totem Towers - take a shortcut to the review and screenshot page here!  I can't pretend that adding some huge Sequoia-style totem poles to Morpheus Remix changes the gameplay greatly, but check out the page, okay?
Well, some promised maps are running a bit late, due to computer problems and, I think, the fine weather;  Boom and Ace seemed to be working on some sort of project for NAB involving skateboarding, Tony Hawks style, as well as giving Boom's site a bit of a new look.  More news as we get it!
Artican has e-mailed to say "Sorry I haven't been playing nerf.  I uninstalled it, and couldn't get the patches to work. Tell everyone I'm still alive and I should be back playing soon, I hope. :)"
Looking at Csports, I see Zevus is just ahead of B-Ball, with Dr.Jekyll close behind.  But that may well have changed by the time you read this!  Team Pointblast seems quiet, with Flame ahead of someone called Player(?), and Darth Animal in third.  I see I've slipped back from 14th to 195th, obviously not playing the team game often enough!
I had a complaint about some people being a little bit nasty in games to another clan and its leader - so just a general note, remember that what may seem like harmless fun to you may not seem that way to the person on the receiving end.  So, be friendly, and we will all have fun, right?
Wednesday August 8th, 2001:
B-Ball has added not just the NAB demo download to his site, but also a "savegame" for it, or "user demo", which ought to be useful for newcomers!  Also some banners for "Ciao.com", which gives you money for your opinions... if you can understand and write in German, that is!  He's doing well on Csports at the moment... #4 in pointblast, behind Ace, Justin and, holding steady at the top, Dr.Jekyll.  Harpo is back after a week or so away, so expect to see him climbing the charts again soon!  I'm at #8...
The Blue Psi map download is now fully visible on the Blades site's downloads page. You also need to download the file next to it, "Blades UnrealEd", and put it in the NAB textures folder; it is tiny, at 758 bytes, but vital.  The map itself is original, but inspired by SLAM's Red Psi map - with its own little tricks!  Flame has a new map out called Sniper Garden, which you can find on the front page of the Star Wars Clan site - it seems a tricky layout to master, but plenty of atmosphere and (hopefully) fun to play.  A good pair of maps to add to your collection, in fact - I hope that I will be able to add the screenshot plus review pages later today, or tomorrow...
No new maps from SLAM, though he assures me he did manage to do some mapping work yesterday.  Joshman has sent me a "beta" of his "World War II" map, so I need to file a report on that too.  Nice "pic of the day" now on Joshman's site, one of those strange giant blob creatures, which probably means Flame was exercising his adminlogin skills!  Of course, given the different time zones, you may find a new update by now, and a new picture, but his site is certainly well worth keeping an eye on.
Monday July 30th, 2001:
The virus attack seemed pretty low-key in the end, but stay careful; we suggest a visit to the
Symantec
site's page on it for the details, and the means to get rid of it if you are infected.  Scroll down the page I've linked to there far enough, and you will find the link you need to remove all nastiness!
Boom has got his Nerf story, "Vacation" moving along nicely now with part ][ - and check out the weird "Picture of the Week" that BlobBlob provided!
The Star Wars Clan's Flame has added three possible clan logos to the bottom of their front page, and invites votes as to which is the best; I gather he hopes to get into the map remixing business, too, as well as - movie making?  Join the clan, and it's your chance to be the next Tom Cruise!  But, if you play as Todd, slightly better-looking...
Blades is working on his own "NerfArcade" website, but I do not seem to have got the URL right yet.  More details eventually...
SLAM should be starting his training for his summer job at Radio Shack today, so if you are in Florida, drop by and buy something!
Sunday July 15th, 2001:
Boom's newest update has surprising news about West Seiydder; due to some problems, he may not be playing much NAB for a while.  Boom has also decided to post Morbias 2000, a map made a while back by Alfie; however, it does not seem to be in downloadable format at the moment.  Still, if you want to see what a "map" really looks like, give it a click...
Problems for B-Ball too last night; his site is supposed to be 100MB, but Tripod refused to publish those NAB music files when he laboriously uploaded them! B-Ball intends to add a new site specifically for the six music tracks, but that will have to wait for next weekend, as he is off to basketball camp today.
The Star Wars Clan people have added the two (large) texture files that you need for the two versions of HalfPipes of Hell, slums and detail, after Baracuda reported that they were needed.
The TA Clan website has been polished, and is back and linked up; there was a friendly battle between TA and CD-S scheduled yesterday, but something went wrong with the server I think, so the CD people ended up playing TT-2001 on a server I made.  With my "home advantage" of zero ping, I was doing rather well, until my computer froze in mid-skirmish.  Sorry everyone...
However, good news on the server front.  SLAM says "I once again have the ability to set up servers, and these will be faster. Whenever I can have the computer unused, I will have a dedicated server with an hour-long playlist of my best maps running."  Now that should be very useful!
Monday July 16th, 2001:
Plenty of new maps around; I have posted screenshot & review pages for most of them now.  Joshman's debut pair of Movie Theatre & International Space Station are unfinished at the moment (follow the NAB Forum "mapmaking" section to keep up to date there), as is Blue_Ghost2's Sequoia Night Beta 1 speedblast arena, while I am not totally sure if Dax's new Alpha Training and Log Forts are officially released yet.  Boom's good-looking new "retex" Fractal Remix 1.2 is on his site, though, awaiting downloading by Your Good Self, as is a previously-unreleased arena by Alfie (remember him?), which is called Morbias 2000 - a version of Morbias ][ Remix with a new, quieter area added!
SLAM has just announced that he is not allowed to do any NAB-related stuff on his computer until he gets a summer job; apparently there is a match between CD-S and TA today, so with him and B-Ball away, Private Ryan will be in charge.  A busy day on NAB, maybe, as Star Wars Clan also have something planned...  Is it good news or bad that SLAM's "Nerf Impromptu Theater" can continue, meanwhile?  "Peps and I did a very stupid story last night, which will probably not appear online yet. I'll probably release it in a year and call it a lost episode," he said with a smile!
Well, I'd better go and get that last review page (Log Forts) done; if they are finished, there is a chance we may even get "download now" buttons for Dax's two maps later today or tomorrow...  .

Tuesday July 17th, 2001:
This was the day Homestead went strange, while they updated their systems for the new "pay for your space" regime.  Both "Welcome" and "Index" pages "failed to load", which meant they were lost - and I had to put up an interim message, rather than the update that I had carefully typed out!
www.NerfArena.com update
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I wrote a nice long update for my main pages today - but with Homestead
changing over to its new form, or whatever, I just can't upload it, and I am fairly
sure that the pages have now been completely lost, now that they "fail to load".
..  Let's see, Boom is working on a new big football stadium map (and hopes to
texture the 20 movers involved...), Dax's maps are nearly ready, I have (probably)
posted International Space Station (by Joshman) on the appropriate review page,
SLAM hasn't got a job yet but is pretty close he reckons, and he has a third
"Nerf Impromptu Theatre" available on the NAB Gallery site...
The way the previous interim page here "failed to load" again, there is no
point in making this too elaborate.  I just hope that normal service will soon be
resumed!

Well, let us hope that things do sort themselves out.  One thing I didn't mention in that brief recapitulation was that Boom mentioned on his site that Peps' cousin had passed away...

Wednesday July 18th, 2001:
Homestead is still very strange; I just updated the "Archives III" page - but after publishing it, what I find online is the old version!
Boom's new map, set in the football stadium, is called TouchDown - it is apparently a remix, but with so much changed that it is more new than old!  That map is a co-production with Ace.  The first demonstration map for "Weapon Toss" is also just about done, he says...
Hmm, I wonder if this will publish okay...?

Thursday July 19th, 2001:
Still Homestead problems, sadly.  That updated "Archives III" page just stays in the sitebuilder, and won't upload!
There seems to be a new "Nerf Impromptu Theatre" piece on the NAB Gallery site; Boom promises to release a new version of Coughin Remix, plus the "Weapon Toss" map, before he goes off camping on Friday for a couple of days.

Friday July 20th, 2001:
Well if Archives III refuses to let itself be updated, then maybe the trick is to start a fourth page instead!  And this does seem to work, thankfully.  Probably one day the two pages will have a three-day overlap, but why not indeed?
Joshman is still working on his Tropical Chinatown map; he has sent me a couple of early betas, and I must start sharing a picture or two with you, so I will attempt to start a (p)review & screenshot page for it - as I don't dare mess up the Review Index page, with its hundreds of links, I will temporarily put a button on this page.  One picture in particular is very interesting!
Saturday July 21st, 2001:
I hope you have all taken a look at the Tropical Chinatown link, and that screenshot of the lovely Ryanne - "Ryanne uses Ryan's mesh, and luna skin. Very simple", Joshman says!
I asked SLAM about his Firechasm map, which has been available as an unfinished beta for quite a while.  "It's very near complete", he told me.  "I changed a lot."  Is it going to be released soon?  "Not sure... Depends on how Tiggy's doing with CTF.  If he releases it, I plan to make it the first CTF map.  If he's not going to, it will be TT."  So, either Capture the Flag or Target Tag - it's all up to Tiggy, who has been working on making CTF work in NAB...
SLAM has also done some work on Eternal Cave Remix. "Another TT map, and a quite good one.   I don't know how they made it in the first place."  I commented that Unreal Tournament mappers seem to be a clever lot.  "Oh, yes.  I need to learn from them. There's still so much I can't do. Very disappointing.  I need to try UTEd."
Tiggy, meanwhile, reports that he is working on a ballblast map - check out The Blast Zone for details of how he is getting on!  Otherwise, it continues to be quiet on the NAB website front - it looks as if Boom was unable to upload any more new maps, such as his new version of Coughin Remix, before going off camping yesterday.  B-Ball is safely back from his basketball camp, so we'll look forward to seeing him online soon...
It seems that the "Future Nerf" saga that SLAM is writing will not be about people's NAB characters, exactly - he was asking me how tall and heavy I am!  Personally,  I think of Custer as being Todd-sized, having the Custer name but the real-world shape just seems strange.  SLAM has been busy writing the first chapter, anyway, which means there hasn't been any Nerf Impromptu Theatre for the last couple of nights...

Sunday July 22nd, 2001:
SLAM has completed a second "beta" of a huge map he has been working hard on, which he calls CD Base 2 - while the finished map will be released to everybody, this version, complete with bad clipping and some errors in the movers, is being offered only to the members of CD.  But at least I have taken a wide selection of screenshots, so take the link and treat yourself to a slide show!  "The map's not a secret anymore, but I don't want it widely played until the final is done", SLAM says.
"In other news, I've releasde a team-specific reworking of Barracuda Park. Remember the good times we used to have online playing team games, with one team holding "The Base" and the other team trying to take it? Well, I've taken the map and cut away the nonessential parts, leaving a great team map behind...with a few useful modifications. It has the same feel, while making players focus more on a team based game. The download is available at http://nabg. 0catch.com."  Sounds good - I had assumed that SLAM was talking about the Barracuda section of Nerf Neighbourhood, but it is the original on-the-disc Barracuda map that he has been working on, with lots of new passageways, and most of the map blocked off.  Seems a strange idea to me, but worth checking out!  The review/screenshot page is now uploaded.
B-Ball has uploaded the NAB music tracks now - or at least the first couple when I visited!  Boom came back early from his camping trip, because the power went off and it was really hot and sticky; he promises to stop being a "whiny little brat" online, if we cut him some slack.  Sounds like a good deal to me!

Monday July 23rd, 2001:
B-Ball's NAB music track downloads are all in working order now; I've just down-loaded the last of the six, unzipped them into a new folder, and double-clicked the first one, which is playing away in the background.  Each MP3 is around 5MB, and gives you the background music from the game without the danger of being shot at!
Ace reports that he is working on a new map, Deep Space Station 2.  The central area and the doorways for the corridors are done, but there is plenty more to do yet - check Boom's site (or maybe Ace's site?) for some screenshots soon!   Boom is hoping to release what he calls his WT-WeaponTossDemo.nrf today, complete with instructions, which sounds a bit complicated.  A new game type?  We shall see!
Joshman has done a third beta version of his Tropical Chinatown now, with a second "crossdressing" skin, "Jamyan" - Jamie (of the Lunas)'s shape,  Ryan's skin!  Not as pretty as Ryanne, but I will add her picture to the TC page.  Strange, it was easy to take Ryanne's picture, but Jamyan was awfully shy, always keeping her distance and dodging away whenever I tried to take a screenshot!  The map itself is a long way from finished, but moving along.
SLAM's CD Base 2 is not anywhere near finished either, as this "beta" has some nasty clipping, mover-vehicles that tend to dump you in mid-journey, and a door "mover" that may boot you out of the game - but it is still a very cool, very large arena, and ought to be wonderful when it is done!

Tuesday July 24th, 2001:
There was a link on the Clan Destiny "Hidden Page" for CD members to download SLAM's beta of the CD Base 2 map, but SLAM changed where he was keeping it; the link has been changed now, and it needs a password you can only get by e-mailing SLAM!
Boom has released his WT-WeaponToss Demo map; check out our screenshot and "review" page, via the Review Index!  I can't review it yet, you really need a number of people to play it as far as I can make out, but I do reprint the "ReadMe", which gives a full explanation of how this "mod" is supposed to work and be played.  Read it, and memorise it; just make sure you have a key enabled for "tossing" or discarding the weapon you are holding... usually the : key I think!
I ran a server yesterday, ending up with NN-Evening...for some reason everyone ended up adminlogging in and "suiciding" and other tricks, until the server finally, as I warned, crashed.  Maybe that was the object of the exercise for Ace, Sharp & Peps?
Tweety has been in touch, and may try to get back into NAB - he only has access to a rather slow computer at the moment, though.  If he is going to re-download all the new maps, that will keep him busy for a while!

Thursday July 26th, 2001:
B-Ball is working on his Frantic Remix, which SLAM has been helping him with; SLAM also had a hand in Boom's latest release, the long-awaited HyperBlast Remix 3-0 (or just HyperBlast! if you see it on server lists).  Luxurious luna textures, some rather cool deep space effects, and the gameplay we know and love.  The screenshot & review page for the map has been updated with a brand-new screenshot, so check it out, going by way of the Review Index of course.
If you check out the bottom of our Players page, you will see that Dr.Jekyll is now down from 1st to 5th on the Csports rankings for NAB Pointblast - and I am a strong 23rd!  The Star Wars Clan have some similar banners on their Clan page - as I write, Darth Animal has somehow got himself up to #4!  These rankings are a lot of fun, so click through to the Csports site and investigate.  Supergirl is at #3, Harpo(CD) #2, and at number one today - Player 1!  (Well, he does play quite a lot, lol...)
I think there are episodes of Nerf Impromptu Theatre (or Nerf Stories Impromptu) that I have not read yet - check NAB Gallery for the latest state of play...while the big news there is that Curt has got his NerfEd fixed, so the maps he was working on are once again on their way, including the massive AE Enforced!
Friday July 27th, 2001:
SLAM tells me that "CD Base does not have my favor anymore.  It's possible I'll use some parts of it, but...it's just not making the cut with the kind of map quality I'm going for.  I might try another map like it again sometime... But it didn't turn out the way I meant it to."  So, it looks as if, at least for now, no finished, final version of that map will be published.  The existing beta is still available to Clan Destiny members; they need to get a password from SLAM himself to be able to download it.  It does have bad clipping, dodgy movers, and other problems, but some parts of it are great!  SLAM mentioned a new project, of course:  "I plan to post some news and even *gasp* screenshots of it within the next day or so", was all he would say!
As it happens, Joshman has also decided to put aside his Tropical Chinatown; given a few good ideas he may return to it, otherwise, well, good experience!  He started a "Clan Destiny Dedicated Server" yesterday; the ping may not be quite good enough for it to continue with that title, but if he is able to keep it running with the old on-the-disc maps, that would be very useful for new players who don't have the latest new maps...
B-Ball is working far into the night on his Frantic Remix - and he has another project, about which I am sworn to secrecy!  Blades is starting his own clan, Pro Fighters - and Icedude sent me a rather cool-looking remix of Boom's HyperBlast Remix, complete with engine noise and a couple more goodies.  I am not sure if he is releasing it yet, however.
Some people were saying that this website is too narrow to fill their screens, so we have made some of our main pages wider.  At the moment, this extra width is mainly used to show the rota of maps that the www.NerfArena.com server has now been set to run through, when it is working, so if you are missing any of the 32 maps listed, this is a perfect time to add them to your collection!
The CSports people tell me "Regarding the default player name problem, we're aware of it and are hoping to come up with a solution that works for all games in the next few days" - so your days of glory are limited, Player1!  I see that the banners have been removed from the Star Wars Clan clan page, while the system is still on "public beta", but you can click through to the site from us, or from our Players page, down at the bottom.  This morning I'm ranked at #21, which can't be bad...

Saturday July 28th, 2001:
Bad news from Florida - well, a slight delay, anyway.  "The main file for that map I was going to release seems to have corrupted on me", SLAM reports.  "I have a backup, but it's not as recent. I've lost some work. Most of it is still there though - what was messed up can be easily reconstructed."
Boom, on his site, tells us that his enjoyable and popular Swampy series of beta maps "has decided to be cancelled", which seems a shame; he is continuing to work on that "Vacation" NAB story, and no doubt various new maps.  The credit for finding the CSports site goes to Flame, who first added details about it to the Star Wars Clan clan page - no coincidence that he and Darth Animal both do rather well in the charts, then!
Joshman's Clan Destiny Dedicated Server seemed to be working better yesterday, and is now running a rota of his choice of new maps; I hope he will supply me with a list!  It is certainly great to have a choice of servers to join, again.

Sunday July 29th, 2001:
A virus alert - if you get sent a map, apparently, but the file ending is not .zip but instead .zip.com, delete it, do not open it.  The text for the message will probably be "Hi! How are you?  I send you this file in order to have your advice  See you later. Thanks"  Assuming you have an anti-virus program, you are probably in no danger, just be careful opening files, however trusted the file sender may be!
Boom reports on his site that he got such an e-mail; I did too, and I have posted the warning on the NAB Forum.  Viruses like this spread too easily, but the person who sent you the e-mail is not trying to be nasty to you, he is just the previous victim, okay?
B-Ball has updated his site, including adding his own Csports banner and some general site improvements.  It looks as if yesterday's NAB play has not registered on their system yet - well, it is only a "public beta" at the moment!

Wednesday August 1st, 2001:
Today, Icedude becomes a genuine teenager; and he has posted his recent maps on his site: therefore 1-on-1 Amateur, 1-on-1 Sequoia, and 1-on-1 Orbital, plus HyperBlast Remix Update, and also Icedude's Island are all there to be grabbed!  The tune on his front page has changed as well, though the new one wouldn't work for me just now.
Talking of not working, the Csports statistics for NAB still seem a few days old...
Boom has got some updated material on the "Real Nerf" page - it mentions there that captured players are "executed", so I suggest staying well clear of that game, eek!
Generally, not a lot seems to be happening; I blame the heatwave.  But do keep up to date with the NAB Forum array, and remember to play some NAB.  This weather, I seem to be playing a lot of Frigate - it's very cooling to dive into the lake and have a swim!
Thursday August 2nd, 2001:
SLAM seems to have been rather busy playing Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force "CTF" - but he is still working on NAB stuff, of course!  "I'm thinking of starting a new CD Base type map - only different", he told me this morning.  "Actually, I'm experimenting with some textures for it now."  He also told me  "And some more big news: Skippy has returned to NAB, and says he has a good many tricks up his sleeve."  But I knew that already, as he'd been playing with FeEdiKo, Dr.Jekyll, BlobBlob and me aboard the good ship HoverCraft last night...
Icedude mentions that he is working on a new arena:  Circular Forts Stadium!  This is he says "a map designed as a mix of Fight Club (by CurtSquirt), Circular Forts (by Me), and Pokemon Stadium 2 (by Nintendo)" - so that can't be bad, right?

Saturday August 4th, 2001:
I have been mercilessly interrogating SLAM about his current projects again - it helps if you deprive him of sleep for a while first!  "I've begun casting for voice roles in a NAB single player campaign that will parallel the upcoming Future Nerf,", he confessed.  "Future Nerf itself is no secret, everyone knows it's in the works. It's just that nothing about the story is being leaked - RIGHT?"   Er, right, SLAM... not a word!
If you want to know about the new large and beautiful two-team map that SLAM is at work on, then you need to visit a new page on the NAB Gallery site for details and screenshots on what is at the moment just entitled Ship - head for SLAM's Desk!  The screenshots are beautiful, but you need to run your screen at 1024 x 768 to get the full effect.  You may like SLAM  be tempted to use one of the space views as wallpaper...
"This is probably my best balanced TT map, if I actually do add TT capability. I may release two versions, if it goes well.  Remember the exploding door in CD Base?  I liked that.  So I'm doing more destructible geometry in this map.  The bridge of a starship can be blown up (temporarily) - there's even a huge asteroid that will explode."  Returning to the exploding bridge, SLAM went on "It just makes it more difficult for the enemy team.  See, when the bridge is destroyed, the ship can't use it's forward beam cannon.  If the ship is hit in another place, it might not be able to use other sections. It's mostly strategy to keep your own team moving, and keep the other team at bay by causing problems with their equipment.  .The general layout, as you will see in the screenshots, is two ships, side by side, and an asteroid in front of them.  The asteroid has two beam cannons, one pointed at each ship. Depending on who gets there first, a cannon can be fired to knock out an opposing ship's bridge.  When that happens, that ship's forward cannon cannot be fired, and the enemy can dig in at the asteroid. From there, they can launch fighters that can do further damage to the enemy ship, or deliver troops. It's in a fixed position, so it doesn't matter. Firing weapons at an enemy ship may also cause interior problems, like a falling girder that can crush someone, or black a pash or both."  I think the sleep deprivation is really kicking in, there - block a passageway?  "Not nerf weapons... I mean the large fixed cannons or fighters. I'm trying to make a map that is highly playable, but also a good eye candy feast as well."
West Seiydder's picture hasbeen added to the NAB Gallery Gallery - and Boom has redesigned his site's front page, which is looking good!

Monday August 6th, 2001:
SLAM has moved the NAB Gallery site  "The change is due to the pathetic changes in service that are associated with 0catch's hypocritical name. They began imposing a 35 MB bandwidth limit per day, which is ridiculously low (most providers have an extremely high limit, if any at all).  I have also added a section called Future Nerf, which is self explanatory. I plan to get out some general info about the story, and get some people recruited for voice talent in the game."  While, if you visit the SLAM's Desk page, you can download the "beta" of TT-ShipTest, and check out the (unfinished) new map!
Ace has also changed his site address, while Boom has added an ezboard forum to his site; Sputnik has a weird map called Smiley to offer ("Pow!"), while Icedude kindly demonstated the strange new weaponry he has built into his Wacky Weaps arena. Dax sent a first beta of a map he calls Dax's Space Station ("its about a quarter of what i hope it to be"), while Curt has his own maps-coming-soon page on NAB Gallery, with some tasty new pictures of Facility Assault!  And I see I am up to #5 in the Csports pointblast chart...
West Seiydder was my guide around TT-ShipTest, at around 3:00am his time, the morning he has to get up soon after 7:00am to go off to camp - so we won't see him on NAB for a while, sadly!  It is certainly a beautiful skybox, with some stunning movers and destructive effects.  When it's all finished, it should be truly excellent.

Tuesday August 7th, 2001:
Icedude has posted his Wacky Weaps map, and also Funhouse Remix - which I can't manage to unzip, I get the "not a valid archive" message, but you may have better luck!  Last night I added screenshot/review pages for Wacky Weaps, TT-ShipTest, Smiley (by SpUtNiK - weird but fun!), and Dax's Space Station, but the Review Index page itself refused to upload, so the only way to get to them was using links from the NAB Forum; luckily today Homestead is behaving itself, and the page is now updated!
I have added a link to the new site Blades (of the Pro Fighters clan) has made; he has apparently completed a map called Blue Psi (though I couldn't spot a "download now" link...), and is working on Area 51 Remix (the same Deus Ex map someone else was working on a while back - see our review/screenshot page...?) and his roller coaster map entitled Nerf Theme Park.
Joshman has some excellent-looking screenshots on his site for his "World War II"
map - he also lists the maps his Clan Destiny Dedicated Server is running, and asks for suggestions.  It seems a pretty good list, but if you have any requests, do get in touch with him!  He has also published his own photograph as "Picture of the Day"!
And today is SLAM's 18th Birthday - Many Happy Returns, SLAM!
Thursday August 9th, 2001:
Boom has got "a cool new beta" on his site, Captions - it only took him about twenty minutes, and it is pretty simple, but could be just the place for a high-scoring one-on-one match!  I've just done the screenshot & review page for it, and also for Sniper Garden by Flame, the beta of World War II by Joshman, and, from Blades, Blue Psi.  Check them out by way of the Review Index, okay?
The Blue Psi map is inspired by SLAM's Red Psi - in fact, it seems SLAM had been considering doing a Blue or Green sequel himself, using the proper "psi" greek letter shape... but Blades has saved him the trouble, right?  Talking of "tributes" to SLAM, check out Joshman's "picture of the day" before it vanishes.  I hope he is archiving those things!
If you ever wonder why this news update does tend to change slightly between the "Welcome", "Index" and "Front" versions - well, Homestead doesn't like lines to begin with coloured lettering, and tends to leave a gap of a line there, so I often need to rephrase things for the different line-width.  And sometimes there just isn't enough room on one page for everything.  So, check around...
Dr.Jekyll remains at #1 on Csports, but Justin, Ace and B-Ball are close on his tail - while I hang on grimly at #8!  Nice to see the big names playing, and the fight getting pretty intense there for the top spot! On Team Pointblast, Flame continues to rule, staying at #1.  The Ballblast names are mainly unfamiliar to me - I think that they probably come from the demo version
Saturday August 11th, 2001:
Two new maps reviewed and rated: Icedude's Funhouse Remix, and Floating Bridge by Scott, which you can also download from us.  There seem to be plenty more maps coming along, to; Joshman's World War II for example, as previewed on his site (and don't forget to check out the pic of the day!), while Flame has one called Solo 1 under development, Blades is working on the Target Tag map The Soccer Field, Boom is promising a Captions 2, and Icedude has been seen testing something called Bobsled Arena online!  And of course SLAM is working on his ShipTest target tag arena - while B-Ball has a number of maps being remixed, as a look at his site's "coming soon" page demonstrates!
Boom's Captions 2 seems likely to have a lot more construction than the first version, with a basement-type level a probability; he has been out enjoying the sunshine and skateboarding lately, though!  I wonder why his front page has not one, but two pop-up banner-windows to get rid of?
Do remember to check out the NAB Forum regularly - news, gossip, insults, even the occasional new map turn up there, so don't miss out, okay?
Sunday August 12th, 2001:
SLAM has run into problems with ShipTest - the NAB engine just can't handle what he wants to do in it.  "Too many mover polygons", he told me.  "It makes them invisible when there are too many.  It will probably make a good UT map."  So the "beta" we have now may be all we get - "unless there's a really good way to rectify the situation", SLAM went on, thoughtfully... "I want to release it, but it could call for major changes, and I'm not sure what to do yet."  SLAM has, however, done some work on a new, deathmatch-style map.  "I think the name will be Menace.  It's another Q3A texture map, which even though it has those textures, looks very different."  He says that he is slightly stuck on it at the moment, too.  "I started off quite well, and I can continue it, I just need to get more thoughts in order. Impromptu is not easy..."  Some cool texturing is promised!  And of course Frantic Remix, by B-Ball and SLAM, should be ready fairly soon.
Just as well I managed to talk to SLAM - otherwise, Joshman's sister having her ears pierced was set to be my lead story...  Blades may have a new map soon, remember - he promises screenshots of Soccer Stadium shortly!

Monday August 13th, 2001:
Well Joshman has had a computer crash, which has slowed him down - temperatures of 108 degrees have meant he had to take down his Clan Destiny server, too!  Blades is hoping to release his Soccer Stadium map very soon - to take a screenshot in the game you just need to press the [F9] button, okay?  Then open it (c:\program files\atari\nerf\ system\shot0000 or 0001 etc) in a suitable photo/paintshop program to adjust the brightness and so on, and convert it to "jpg" format... c:\shot0001.jpg or whatever...
Boom hopes to release Captions [2.1] or some such number shortly - the more time he spends on it, the better it looks, he reports.  Well, yes...  Darth Animal and Flame have been seen exploring a map entitled ATAT Barge Remix - a huge UT arena (with a Star Wars theme!) which may well take a while to texture properly!  And they were also spotted in the ominous-sounding House of Doom... CurtSquirt has, it seems, had his EZBoard account hacked, so that while he has been away, someone else has been posting as "him" - eek!  So has it been the Real Deal as admin in Boom's forum...?
Thursday August 16th, 2001:
Well, if there had been any news I would have reported it.  The Star Wars Clan has got an update - and posted for download Flame's Sniper Garden and the new (and rather strange) Room of Doom, which comes in two versions, with or without monsters!  Well, oversize Wes Bots in a bad mood, actually!  Flame has, apparently, nearly finished the great ATAT Barge Remix - but he is away until after the weekend now, so we must wait until it has had its final "tweaking"...  And Blades says he is working on a "Star Wars" themed map, too, which sounds as if it will be worth investigating.
Alpha Flight is back after the summer break, fully rested and ready to rumble!  To make things interesting, he will be using a new identity - how long before we spot him, I wonder...?  He says he is not staying for long, he just wants to test his skills, and see what he can do!
Friday August 17th, 2001:
SLAM's new map, Menace, has been posted - find it on his maps page, merely listed alphabetically!  "In my opinion, an excellent use of the Quake3a.utx file, and a map that will convert well to UT", he says, and I don't see anything to argue about!  I had just come from looking at a typical newbie remix, with brick-textured skies, invisible water, and pick-ups in odd places, so it was a great relief to be in SLAM's capable care.
I wouldn't want to describe Flame's pair of maps, MH-S-Room of Doom ( the one with large Wes-monsters to hunt) and The Room of Doom as "newbie", as he has shown that he can do capable work.  Rather, it's a matter of a (reasonably) new mapmaker wanting to test out what he can do.  There are some strong ideas here, but the flickering light is a pain - trying to take a screenshot, I kept on getting the pitch-black moment rather than the flicker of blue light!  You could get a headache in either of these maps rather too easily for me to hand out a high rating.
Darth Animal quietly sneaked Voac Remix Beta 1 onto the end of the selection of download- bottons on the Star Wars Clan front page; from the name, I assume he hopes to issue an improved version, which is nice to know.  The weapons may be few and strangely arranged, at least one almost hidden in the wall, while the lights and flames and water and sky effects are, well, something he's not worked out yet - but the brick textures seem to work, generally (except as the gently moving sky!), and the actual map he chose to remix seems to be a good one.  If you are interested in how maps are remixed, then, well, it's not a big download, try it out - it works fine, and the Bots seem in good form, so what do you have to lose?  I might ask Darth how he got as far as he did, maybe add something to the "FAQs" page one day soon...
Otherwise, things continue to be very quiet; we will continue to wait, until after the weekend, for the Star Wars-themed ATAT Barge Remix - if Flame can capture the feel of the UT original, it should be a great place to fight in!

Monday September 10th, 2001:
Boom's new site design looks very nice - at the moment there doesn't seem to be a very new news update to go with it, but - coming soon, no doubt!  In other news, Braveheart says he is working on a new map called Death Museum, and will release it in a few days. He has withdrawn his map Blacktop to make improvements to it - and has Armagedon Beta 2 now available on his TA Clan site!  It is a nice expansion and improvement on the first beta.
I forgot to transfer the news about Tiggy's CTF progress to the main news section of my site, although I did mention it on the News Update Channel - oops!  B-Ball kindly pointed that out, and has also sent Tiggy some new skins for the actual team flags which Tiggy says are "amazing", and will be used, with a few tweaks. Tiggy has been doing a lot of work on the CTF mod this week, but not getting very far. "I think it is very important to mention the CTF project on your site because then we could hope for more Online- Players - and a lot more players would/will go online to play CTF if Tiggy has released it", B-Ball says, and I think he's right.
Blue_Ghost2 has e-mailed to say that he is stopping playing NAB.  "I had lots of fun playing it, but now I´m not really interested to play it, because I just play CS all day long," he told me - though he doesn't rule out the possibility of returning.  Good player, good company - and the maker of some fine maps.  I hope he does come back to us...
Justin e-mailed to say "I FINALLY got my NerfEd to work right, with SLAM's help, and I can make some basic rooms and doors already!  Soon I will be able to make my own maps...but work on Ares isn't going too well.  I managed to texture one door, but ran into trouble trying to texture the big fan..."
Tux_the_Penguin tells me "We've been running out of space on our web site for map files so we've added a new web site and moved the majority of our map zip files to it.  If any NAB sites want to link to it, it's at www.whitestonetech.org/tmon.  We have have 250 Meg to work with on it. It's through www.micd2hosting.net/ if anybody wants to check them out."  He adds "We're still working on Urban Arena ][ and making progress. We hope to have it ready soon."
And that seems to be about all the news I could come up with.  It seems that my Custer@NerfArena.com e-mail address is still not working properly, so apologies if you have sent something there - sorry, Neo, can you re-send to CusterCD01@hotmail.com please?  Hopefully, Iomart will resolve whatever the problem is, eventually!

Friday September 14th, 2001:
"Please let the Nerf community know that the TC Server will be taken down in observance of the International Day of Mourning.  It will go down at 0000 on Friday, September 14, 2001 and resume operations at 0001 on Saturday, September 15, 2001.

"My Unreal Tournament server will also observe this occasion during the same time periods."
                                                    - Policer_O
Saturday September 15th, 2001:
Braveheart has his new Death Mueseim map for download on the TA Clan website - but be warned, it needs the Egypt texture file from UT (86KB map, 1.50MB textures), so if you don't have that, you can't get in!  But check out our review & screenshot here.  He is also working on maps called "The Matrix" and "Valley of Megiddo" - hopefully it will be a bit easier to stay alive in them...
Remember to check on the News Update Channel for any late-breaking news stories - and we'll be back here when there is enough news to fill some space, right?

Saturday October 13th, 2001:
I was getting on quite well with updating my "download now" buttons - but now Tux has e-mailed to say "Yesterday I discovered that MICD Hosting took whitestonetech.org down.  They erased my files and removed my DNS entry in their servers. I haven't been told why yet. The last email I got from their support wondered if I violated their policies. I've read their policies and would never do anything to violate them. I'm thinking that they just saw lots of zip files and decided that it was a violation without checking what it was.  I have set up an account with Primemaster and as soon as the DNS kicks in and I can upload, it should be back up. It may be a few days before it's working again." Weird - I wonder what MICD thought he wanted all that space for, if not to post files?  But it means that all pale-blue "download now" buttons no longer work, sigh...
Darth Animal has uploaded a second beta of Dogtown Remix to the Star Wars Clan website, with more texturing, and pulsators as well as triple strikes - and Justin has been working on adding more stuff, though a NerfEd crash robbed him of an hour's work, and the "tube train" was resisting all efforts to texture it... Darth says he is also working on a Gladiator Remix, which sounds fun!
Sunday October 14th, 2001:
Tux_the_Penguin reports that the new host for his site seems pretty sensible, and all the files have been uploaded to them - so those light blue "download now" links of mine are all working again!  "I called Primemaster and asked if their policies were OK with a lot of zip files that were not copyright-infringing, and they said it was no problem as long as I did not go over 2 GB of bandwidth a month, or about 400,000 hits. I measured last month's and it was 400 Meg and we've only had 3741 hits to the front page in 14 months", Tux tells me. "They sound very reasonable. I told them about my experience with MICD, and it was all he could do not to laugh... I guess I should have been more suspcious of MICD's price than I was."
Tux has taken the opportunity to do some general updating, too.  "I've updated the texture page and this time I've tried to put the names of the maps that use the texture. I've also updated the publictextures.utx file to v1.1 by adding some additional sizes for the wall textures. I hope this helps with the scale problem that some were having. If you see some maps that are missing from the texture list, please let me know."
Darth Animal has run into a little problem with Gladiator Remix - he used the UT "Domination" version rather than the plain old "Deathmatch", and that leaves him with strange revolving "movers" above the original Domination points!  He is getting on quite well with another arena, known as Vindictive Remix, however, which looks likely to be his next release.

Here's an e-mail that the Elves asked me to print, from Squirrel King, dated April 13th:

Dear Custer, WE the Elven clan Would like you to please post the following paragraphs, UNCENSORED, on your website, we tried to post on the forums like everyone else, but feediko deleted and altered our posts. so now i am sending this to you, oping you will put this msg up, stating it is form us! we would be very happy if you would, thank you for your time!

You sniveling worms, Squirrel King has been delayed in his return to NAB, so this is Elvis_The Elf reporting. You are all fools, you claim to love this game yet you spend more time making maps then actually playing them, which makesit all pointless, your all hopelessly lost, and when our mighty leader returns to nab he will unleash a horrid vengeance upon you, the ones who
have spoiled this game. We have destroyed all in D2, we'll do it in NAB again aswell.

P.S. we don't appreciate feediko altering our posts so he can halt our divine msg, and try to buy himself some time until armaggedon! we also don't appreciate him deleting our posts because you he can't handle the truth.  we challenged him to a duel, but he kept making excuses not too.
he too will fall like corn before a scythe, when our force returns!!!!!
