US News & World Report Ranks New College Nation's #1 Public Liberal Arts College

(August 18, 2006) – New College of Florida, the state honors college for the liberal arts and sciences located in Sarasota, is the nation’s #1 ranked public liberal arts college, according to U.S. News & World Report in their “America’s Best Colleges, 2007 Edition.”  Sharing the top spot with New College in this year’s rankings is Virginia Military Institute, which was last year’s top-ranked public liberal arts college.  “America’s Best Colleges” hits newsstands on Monday, August 21, and is annually the most widely distributed and anticipated of the college rankings’ guides.

In addition to its ranking as the country’s #1 public liberal arts college, U.S. News & World Report ranked New College number 86 overall among all public and private liberal arts colleges in the country.  New College was the only liberal arts college in the state, public or private, to be rated among the magazine’s Top Tier of 110 Liberal Arts Colleges.  New College’s #1 ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” comes just months after the College was named the “Nation’s #1 Best Value” by the Princeton Review.

“We are both pleased and honored to be named the country’s top-ranked public liberal arts college by U.S. News & World Report,” said New College of Florida President Mike Michalson in announcing the news. “This is a significant recognition of the quality of the programs we offer, the outstanding students we attract, and the high-level caliber of faculty who call New College home.  It is also a nice companion piece to our recent number one ranking in The Princeton Review.”

New College advanced to this year’s top spot after placing #3 in last year’s issue of “America’s Best Colleges,” the first year in which New College was eligible for the U.S. News & World Report rankings.  The College’s overall placement of #86 among all public and private liberal arts colleges was also an improvement of two spots from last year’s rankings.
