BBC2 arts series noted for innovation and for tackling the avant-garde and popular culture. Also noted for the quirky nature of many of its programmes, among the most successful being My Way, which looked at different interpretations of a single song, and The Private Life of the Ford Cortina, exploring the impact of a make of car on popular culture. Originally divided into strands on cinema, theatre and art and design, it then ran in regular and irregular series until 1994, since when only specials and Easter trilogies have appeared, though the famous Arena bottle remains a guarantee of quality.    SB
