This week's calendar

Thursday, February 22 to Monday, February 26
M*A*S*H New York
For this group show of emerging contemporary artists, the curators chose an emerging building: The Helena, on West 57th Street. Located just two blocks from the Armory Show, the exhibition (sponsored by the Durst Organization and The Helena), will present "a fresh look at the current state of the art world." Oh, and it will also present free vodka at Thursday night's reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. 601 W. 57th St., 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. For information, visit M*A*S*H New York.

Saturday, February 24
The Orchid Show
The New York Botanical Garden's annual orchid show kicks off today, with thousands of varieties on view at the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. There are plenty of orchid-related events held in tandem with the exhibit, which will continue through April 8, including how to buy an orchid, how to care for your orchid, how to photograph your orchid and even how to paint your orchid. Orchid fanatics unite! Visit The New York Botanical Garden for information and tickets.

Monday, February 26
ICON AS BRAND PANEL
We've turned blue holding our collective breath for Calatrava's "Townhouses in the Sky" project, but in the absence of any actual progress, we'll willingly listen to folks talk about it. Panelists will address this and other "icon-branded" buildings -- meaning, buildings that "act as distinct markers, creating above market value, while symbolically elevating the image of a city." Frank Sciame, CEO of F.J. Sciame Construction, will discuss his proposal for "Townhouses"; also on the panel is Mustafa Abadan, design partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, one of the leading architecture firms responsible for the Time Warner Center and the Freedom Tower. 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Center for Architecture (NY Chapter), 536 La Guardia Place. $10 for AIA members/$15 for non-members. To make a reservation, call (212) 683-0023 ext. 121 or e-mail info@architecturebrand.com.

Thursday, March 1
LIVING DOWNTOWN SEMINAR
OK, so you know we at NYP Home are HUGE fans of the Financial District. We love the explosion of spiffy new condo developments, and all the restaurants and retail that are on their way. But if we haven't managed to convince you why it's the next hot neighborhood, why not let these experts tell you why. The seminar, officially titled “Living Downtown: Inspired Living in Manhattan’s Financial District,” will be hosted by Stephen Kliegerman of Halstead Property, Marc Sokobin of the Manhattan Mortgage Company and Ramona Mahtani of Swig Equities, among others. Plus, free wine and cheese! 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Downtown Information Seminar, 55 Exchange Place. RSVP required. Call (212) 425-INFO or e-mail events@downtowninfocenter.org.

We'll also be celebrating the grand opening of two new residential properties: 37 Wall Street (champagne!) and 48 Bond (dim sum from Chinatown Brasserie!) next week. We'll let you know exactly what we think after the fetes.

If you'd like to have your event listed, please e-mail relevant information to jceaser@nypost.com.

Art fair frenzy

For the next two weeks in New York City, you won't be able to swing your Birkin bag without hitting an art lover. Starting with the granddaddy of them all, The Armory Show, on February 22, the city will be awash in art fairs, including Scope New York, Artexpo, Works on Paper and The Art Show -- many running concurrently. And if you’re anything like Montgomery Burns -- "I'm no art critic, but I know what I hate" -- at least you can enjoy the parties, from the glam preview galas to the cool cocktail receptions.

With 148 top galleries being represented, this is one of the world's leading art fairs. Approximately half of the exhibitors are from Europe, with a healthy dose of New York galleries being represented. This show's a doozy -- be sure to wear your walking shoes and carry a big checkbook.

Visit: Scope New York
A great alternative (or complement) to the Armory Show, Scope New York, now in its sixth year, is the place to find emerging art talent. This fair will present 65 international galleries, along with a number of special performances, installations and screenings all over town -- and plenty of parties as well. Congregate with fellow art lovers at the emerging collectors receptions, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. And you won't have to trek over to the far west side on foot -- there's shuttle service every 15 minutes to The Armory Show.

This is the first year the fair has collaborated with The Armory Show to offer collectors a broad range of art choices -- isn't it great when art fairs can get along?
