(Sports Network) - Last year it was good enough for Sidney Crosby to simply
impress with his individual skill, but in his sophomore campaign the
youngster has his Pittsburgh Penguins in line for a playoff berth.
Crosby leads the NHL with 84 points this season and, heading into Tuesday's
action, the Penguins are sixth in the Eastern Conference with 61 points. In
his rookie campaign last year, Crosby eclipsed the 100-point plateau, but his
Penguins came nowhere near making the playoffs.
The 19-year-old Nova Scotian has 25 goals and 59 assists this year to place
him 12 points ahead of Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis, the league's second-
leading scorer.
The youngster also has 14 more points than Washington Capitals phenom
Alexander Ovechkin, who beat out Crosby for the Calder Trophy as the league's
top rookie in 2005-06.
Crosby's point-producing and gritty play has certainly helped his club
recently, as the team had ripped off six consecutive victories before falling
to Montreal in overtime on Sunday.
Pittsburgh has a big test this evening, when it welcomes the Western
Conference-leading Nashville Predators to the Steel City. The Penguins have
won seven of its last eight on home ice, including five straight contests as
the host.
