DESCRIPTION
Extremely rare rookie card of Nap Lajoie from the legendary E107 Breisch-Williams series. Superb crisp, clean example of this extraordinary prewar rarity. Nap Lajoie was one of baseball's most talented young stars when this card was issued. He was just coming into his own as a world-class hitter, having just posted a .378 batting average in his first season with Cleveland in 1902. Breisch-Williams E107s are extremely significant to advanced baseball card collectors. Issued in 1903, these unusual and classic-looking black-and-white caramel cards have long been revered by collectors as they represent the only major baseball card set of the era, and as such, the set includes the rookie cards of many of the greatest stars of the early twentieth century, including, of course, Nap Lajoie. This is an E107 Type 2 card, one of fewer than five Type 2 examples of Lajoie known to exist. E107 Type 2 cards are considerably rarer than Type 1 cards. Type 2 cards are printed on much thicker stock with blank backs and narrower borders than Type 1 cards, and appear to be handcut. For this reason, grading companies will only authenticate them and not assign numerical grades. Otherwise, this card would have graded much higher than most E107s that exist in the hobby, and much higher than the only other E107 Lajoie Type 2 card we have ever seen offered at auction. In the past, some collectors have thought that Type 2 cards may have been cut from an advertising piece, but the facts that a Type 2 specimen with an overprint reading "The Breisch-Williams Co." has been discovered and that Type 2 examples have been found in original owner collections of Type 1 cards strongly suggest that E107 Type 2 cards are a standard production issue. The Lajoie card is very crisp and clean, both front and back, with perfect centering, flawless registration, and four square corners. The card has an Excellent appearance, though a light horizontal crease can be seen from the reverse (this is virtually undetectable from the front). This is a very significant card, as a rare type card, as an E107 Hall of Famer, and as the rookie card for Nap Lajoie, one of the most powerful right-handed hitters of the dead-ball era and considered by many to be the greatest second baseman in baseball history. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+.
