January 2007 Newsletter

(Published: January 23, 2007)
As we worked in our office, sorting through the avalanche of winner-information paperwork in anticipation of next month’s Alaska State Spelling Bee, the call came in. An official from an Anchorage school – we’ll omit the names to protect the innocent – alerted us to the outcome of a Newspapers in Education (NIE) emergency.

Urgent reminder:

(Published: September 29, 2006)
Hello Anchorage Daily News-Newspapers in Education users and friends - This is a reminder that because one of our larger NIE sponsors isn't contributing this year, we've significantly cut the number of newspapers we're delivering to classrooms statewide. We're working to locate more corporate funding, but the process may take some time. If you know of companies or individuals willing to sponsor the program, please let us know.

What is "NIE"?

(Published: October 8, 2002)
Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a program which provides newspapers to classrooms throughout Alaska. Newspaper study increases student awareness about the world in which they live and helps equip them to impact their communities as Alaska's future leaders. Through the generous contributions of our corporate sponsors, the Newspapers in Education program is able to provide thousands of daily newspapers to students and educators across Alaska.

October 2006 Newsletter

(Published: October 5, 2006)
Don’t get us wrong, we love hearing from Alaska’s educators here at Daily News-Newspapers in Education headquarters. But as disappointing as it might be, it’s time for all of us to accept the recent drop in NIE circulation. We should instead concentrate on putting fewer newspapers to greater use.
