about dr. phil

biography

Dr. Phil McGraw has galvanized millions of people to "get real" about their own behavior and create more positive lives. Dr. Phil, his syndicated, daily one-hour series, is the second highest rated daytime talk show in the nation. The show has been making headlines and breaking records since its September 2002 launch, when it garnered the highest ratings of any new syndicated show since the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Show 16 years prior.

Now in the fifth season of his namesake series, Dr. Phil’s success stems from his “get real” approach to helping his guests solve their problems, stripping through their emotional clutter, getting down to the bare bones of their issues and giving them the challenge they need to move ahead. Dr. Phil champions those who suffer from such silent epidemics as domestic violence, child abuse, depression, racism, substance abuse and other health issues that are prevalent in society, but go largely undiscussed by their victims.

One of this season’s highlights will be literally looking into the lives of several groups of people who will periodically come to reside at the “Dr. Phil House,” an actual home fitted with cameras and television screens. These willing subjects will be observed 24/7 to investigate their dysfunctional behaviors and they will receive the benefits of Dr. Phil’s counsel at appropriate moments when he will pop up on a monitor to talk with them, or show up in person. Dr. Phil will be able to access the house’s happenings at any time from his own private home, his office and even his car.

Dr. Phil will go behind the headlines and delve into newsworthy segments and interviews. The show will also continue to devote episodes to the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina and Rita that destroyed homes and livelihoods in the Gulf Coast region. A recent example of this are the two “Hurricane Katrina” shows that featured a hard-hitting interview with the new FEMA director, as well as Dr. Phil’s assistance to a couple who were experiencing marital strains and depression in the wake of the storm’s devastation.

The series will also continue with its groundbreaking themes from prior seasons, such as the Dr. Phil Families, the Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge and drug interventions.

In its fourth season, Dr. Phil focused on women's empowerment. These included topics on how to leave an abusive husband; find the right man; stand up for yourself and how to address extreme food obsessions with ways to change your perception on body image.
