New Voices and the Jewish Student Press Service Present:

The 35th Annual National Conference for Independent Jewish Student Journalists

May 30 - June 1 at NYU's Bronfman Center in New York City

This conference will provide:

  • A total immersion in contentious Jewish institutional, political, and cultural issues with top journalists
  • Multiple chances to network with student and professional journalists from around the country
  • Workshops on honing your journalism and writing skills with journalists and writers
  • A chance to collaborate on the Sept/Oct 2006 issue of New Voices, "The Talk Back Issue," which will be an in-depth look at the mainstream Jewish world and students' place within and outside it

New Voices' conferences regularly feature guests from The New York Times, The Village Voice, The New Yorker, Reuters, The Forward, The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, The New York Jewish Week, Ms., and many more highly regarded publications.

Past conference and workshop participants include journalists and editors Esther Kaplan, Ari Goldman, Ami Eden, Alisa Solomon, Dan Sieradski, Samuel Freedman, Ethan Bronner.

Registration Information

  • Participant fee of $100 includes two nights stay at an East Village hostel and all group meals. Financial aid is available.

  • 11:30 - 12:30: What is Jewish Journalism? What is the History and Current Role of the Jewish Press?

  • 12:45 - 2: Pro-Israel v. Pro-Palestine: Campus Politics
  • How does the campus atmosphere reflect the conflict? How and when do outside organizations like the David Project and the Zionist Organization of America interfere with student affairs? Where do people get information and where do student and professional goals diverge?
    • With Bari Weiss, co-founder of Columbians for Academic Freedom, and Ken Stern, anti-Semitism expert at the American Jewish Committee.

  • 2 - 3: Lunch and discussion with Lawrence Bush, editor of Jewish Currents.

  • 3:30 - 4:45: Journalism, Bias, and Language: Israel in the News
  • How do various news sources cover the conflict? A discussion about language, politics, political commitments, biases, and journalistic principles.

  • 5 - 6:15: In Depth: The Mainstream Jewish Agenda
  • What are the spending and program priorities of major Jewish philanthropists and institutions? What is their approach to youth and student programming, and who is at the fore? Why the sudden surge of Jewish hip-hop, drag nights, trendy youth programming? .

  • 6:15 - 6:45: Discussion about writing for New Voices, free time

  • How is media innovating/evolving with the internet and the declining popularity of print media? How does a publication reconcile its mission with the financial demands of a business? Must popularity lead to becoming mainstream and no longer alternative?

  • What are the benefits of having an independent organization instead of integrating into a larger synagogue? How do queer Jewish organizations approach diverse religious practice and orientation? What challenges do they face?

  • 2:30 - 3:45: A Close Look at the Successes and Limitations of Jewish Institutional Campus Life - Hillel, Chabad, et al.
  • What are the various institutional approaces to Jewish campus life? How much room is there for innovation within Hillel's programming? Are professionally run organizations necessary for Jewish campus life?

  • Introduced by Henny Wenkart, editor of Jewish Women's Literary Annual

    What is Jewish literature, where does it come from, and where is it going?

  • 12:30 - 1:30: Lunch

  • 1:45 - 3: Post-Denominationalism: Breakaway Congregations and the Future of the Jewish Religious Establishment
  • What does it mean to be unaffiliated, how do you measure affiliation? In the current move toward trans-denominationalism, what’s the incentive to train within a particular denomination? What kinds of changes are students struggling to make from within?
    • With Rabbinical students from Hebrew College, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Jewish Theological Seminary, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, Hebrew Union College

  • 3 - 4:30: Closing and Final Talk

    Discussion and breakout sessions about the the conference, issues raised, discussion of story ideas, how to get involved with New Voices and the journalism world.
